Chapter 15 - THE DARKEST HOUR

By morning, the reality settled in. Marcus had vanished. The evidence was gone. Arthur called, terrified—he had been threatened, warned to stay silent or lose everything.
“We have nothing left,” I told Emma. “No proof. No allies. No protection.”
“We have the truth,” she said. “And we have each other.”
But truth alone is a fragile weapon.
That afternoon, Julian appeared on television. He spoke about Dad’s legacy. He spoke about family. He announced that he was taking over Dad’s businesses—“to preserve what my brother built.” He spoke about me with sadness, saying I was “grieving and unstable,” that I had made “accusations born of pain.”
He had already begun rewriting the story. And with the evidence destroyed, no one could contradict him.
When we saw the broadcast, Lily looked up at me. “Why does Uncle Julian look sad on TV?”
“Because he’s lying,” I told her gently.
“Why do people let him lie?”
“Because they don’t know the truth yet.”
But it felt like the truth would never matter. Julian was untouchable. He had power, money, influence, and no one to stop him.
Two days later, the worst happened.
I returned to the apartment from buying groceries and found Emma standing in the living room, pale and trembling. Lily was huddled on the sofa, crying silently.
“Someone was here,” Emma said. Her voice was tight with fear. “They came in through the back window. They left this.”
She handed me a single photograph.
It was a picture of Lily. Taken while she slept.
On the back, written in Julian’s handwriting: Next time, she won’t be sleeping.
I stared at those words. The threat was clear. Stop fighting. Or lose her.
That night, I sat beside Lily’s bed while she slept. I watched her breathe. I thought about Dad. About Lily’s mother. About Vanessa. About everyone who had stood against Julian and lost.
I thought about walking away. About taking Lily and Emma, changing our names, disappearing forever. Letting Julian keep everything he had stolen. If it meant Lily would be safe… was it not worth the price?
I stood up and walked into the kitchen. Emma sat at the table, awake, waiting.
“I’m giving up,” I said.
Emma looked at me. “What?”
“I’ll call Julian. I’ll tell him we’re leaving. We’ll disappear. We’ll never speak a word against him again.” My voice broke. “It’s the only way to keep Lily alive.”
Emma stood. She walked over and gripped my shoulders. “If you do that… he wins. Everything Dad died for. Everything Lily’s mother died for. It was all for nothing.”
“And if we keep fighting… Lily dies too.” Tears spilled over. “I can’t risk her. I can’t lose her.”
Emma pulled me into an embrace. “I know. I know how much it hurts. But Julian will kill her anyway. Whether you fight or run. He will never feel safe while she is alive. She is the only heir. The only witness. The only connection to everything he stole.”
I went still.
Emma pulled back. “You know that, don’t you? Deep down.”
I did. I had known it all along. Julian would never let Lily live. Not really. She would always be a threat. A loose end. A reminder of what he had taken.
“Walking away won’t save her,” Emma said quietly. “Only exposing him will save her. Only taking away everything he has—his money, his power, his reputation—will make him helpless enough to stop.”

I looked at the photograph in my hand. At Lily’s sleeping face. At Julian’s cold, confident words.
“Then we don’t just fight him,” I said slowly. “We destroy him.”
