Chapter 13 - THE SECRET FROM THE PAST

We didn’t stay at the house. We drove straight to the capital that same night, pushing through exhaustion until we reached the safe house Arthur had arranged—a small, secure apartment in a quiet neighborhood, unlisted and untraceable.
By morning, I had begun the process. I contacted the federal prosecutor Dad had trusted years ago—a man whose reputation was spotless, who owed Julian nothing, who answered only to justice. We arranged to meet in secret.
Before we handed over the evidence, I went through the folder one more time. I needed to know every detail. Every name. Every connection.
And there, beneath a stack of bank records, I found something Dad had tucked away—a handwritten letter, folded and sealed, addressed to me.
I broke the seal.
*My dearest son,*
*If you are reading this, then I am gone. And you have found the truth. I am sorry I could not be there to tell you myself. I am sorry I left you to face this alone. But I had no choice. Julian was watching every move I made. I could not speak freely.*
*Listen to me carefully. Julian is not just greedy. He is dangerous. He has spent decades building alliances with powerful people—people who do not want their secrets exposed. If you take this evidence to the wrong place, you will not survive. Trust only those whose names are written on the final page. They are safe. Everyone else… assume they work for Julian until proven otherwise.*
*There is something else. Something I hesitated to write. Something I hoped you would never need to know.*
*Julian is not my brother.*
I stopped reading. I looked up at Emma. She saw my face and stepped closer.
“What is it?”
I kept reading.
*We grew up together. Our parents adopted him. They never told him. They never told anyone. They wanted him to feel like he truly belonged. But Julian found out when he was eighteen. He was devastated. He felt betrayed. Rejected. He believed we had stolen his birthright. That everything we had was rightfully his.*
*That is why he did it. Not just for money. To take back what he believed belonged to him. To punish us for lying to him. To destroy the family that lied to him.*
*I never told him I knew. I hoped one day he would heal. That he would understand. But his bitterness grew. And it consumed him.*
*Be careful, my son. Julian hates this family. He hates our name. And he will not stop until he has destroyed everything we love. Protect Lily. Protect Emma. Protect yourself. And remember—justice is not about revenge. It is about truth. And truth will always prevail.*
I set the letter down gently.
Emma stared at me. “Julian… isn’t really our uncle?”
“Adopted.” I rubbed my face. “All this time. The jealousy. The anger. The need to take everything… because he felt he never truly belonged.”

“That doesn’t excuse murder,” Emma said. Her voice was steady. “Nothing excuses what he did.”
“No.” I looked at the evidence spread across the table. “But it explains it. And it means he will never stop. Not until he believes he has truly won.”
