Chapter 11 - THE RETURN HOME (continued)

My breath caught in my throat. I stared at Julian’s face in that photograph—the eyes I’d known my whole life, the smile I’d trusted, all stripped away to reveal something cruel and empty. This was the man who had watched Lily’s mother, who had followed her, who had waited for the perfect moment to silence her forever.
Emma leaned over my shoulder. Her hand flew to her mouth. “He killed her. He really did.”
“He killed her because she found out,” I said quietly. “She discovered what he was doing. She told Dad. And Julian murdered her to keep them quiet.”
I turned the photo over. On the back, in Dad’s handwriting: October 12th. Three days before the accident. She knew. He knows she knew.
Every piece of the puzzle clicked into place. Lily’s mother hadn’t died by chance. Dad hadn’t died by chance. Vanessa hadn’t died by chance. Every death, every lie, every threat—it all traced back to the same man. To my uncle.
“We have everything,” Emma said, her voice trembling but firm. “Names, dates, faces, transactions. Every single piece of proof.”
“Yes.” I closed the folder gently. “And Julian doesn’t know we found it.”
We stood in silence for a moment. Somewhere in this house, Julian had walked these floors, sat at this desk, pretended to grieve with us. He had watched Lily grow. He had held her. All while planning to take everything that belonged to her.
“He’s been one step ahead of us this whole time,” I said. “Now we’re one step ahead of him.”
I tucked the folder securely inside my coat, right beside the encrypted drives. “We leave. Now. Before he realizes we’re here.”
But as I stepped toward the door, I heard it. A car pulling up the long driveway. Headlights sweeping across the study windows.
Emma froze. “Who is it?”
I glanced at my watch. “At this hour?”
May you like
Footsteps on the porch. Heavy. Deliberate. A key turning in the lock.
My blood turned to ice. Julian.
