Chapter 11 - THE RETURN HOME

We arrived back at the estate shortly after midnight. The house stood dark and silent. Julian didn’t know we were coming. Or so I hoped.

We slipped in through the back door—the same one Vanessa had used to take Lily. I moved slowly, every sense alert. The house felt different now. Colder. Like a place that had been emptied of life and filled with ghosts.

Dad’s study remained exactly as we’d left it. Books, desk, leather chair. I went straight to the desk, knelt, and ran my fingers along the floorboards beneath it. Near the center, one board shifted slightly.

I pried it up. Beneath lay a metal box. Locked. But Dad had left the key taped to the underside of the board, exactly where he’d said it would be.

My hands trembled as I opened it.

Inside was a single thick folder. Labeled in Dad’s handwriting: JULIAN’S NETWORK — EVIDENCE.

I opened it. Photos. Names. Contact information. Bank records. Transaction logs. Dates and locations. Every piece of proof Julian had spent years trying to destroy.

And at the very back… photographs I had never seen.

May you like

Photos of Lily’s mother. Taken days before she died. Photos of her meeting with Dad. Photos of her handing Dad a thick envelope. And finally—photographs of Julian, following her. Watching her. Waiting.

I stared at the last photo. Julian stood in shadow, face half-hidden. But his eyes were clear. Cold. Calculating. Murder in his gaze.
