Chapter 14 - THE BETRAYAL

Two days later, we drove to the courthouse to meet the prosecutor. Arthur came with us. He had insisted on being there—to verify the evidence, to testify, to finally do what was right.
We arrived early. We met in a secure conference room on a floor with no windows. The prosecutor—Marcus Hale—arrived promptly. He was an older man, gray-haired, sharp-eyed. He shook our hands, accepted the drives and the folder, and began reading.
He read in silence for an hour. Page after page. Recording after recording.
When he finished, he sat back. His expression was grave.
“This is… extraordinary,” he said. “The scope of it. The people involved.”
“Can you protect us?” I asked. “Can you protect Lily?”
Marcus looked at me. “I can try. But these are powerful people. They have influence everywhere. Once this goes public… your lives will be in danger.”
“We know.” I leaned forward. “We’re ready to testify. We have everything you need. But we need to know we’re safe.”
“You will be placed under witness protection,” Marcus said. “New identities. New home. New lives. Julian and everyone connected to him will be arrested. You will never need to hide again.”
I breathed a sigh of relief. For the first time since Lily’s birthday, I allowed myself to believe it might truly be over. That we could be safe. That we could finally rest.
We left the courthouse feeling lighter. Arthur walked beside us. “Your father would be proud,” he said quietly. “You finished what he started.”
We returned to the apartment to pack. We were scheduled to leave at dawn. Marcus had arranged transport. Everything was in motion.
That night, my phone rang. An unknown number.
I answered.
“Did you really think it would be that easy?”
Julian’s voice.
I went cold. “How—”
“Marcus Hale works for me,” Julian said. His voice was calm, almost amused. “He always has. Your father didn’t know. Arthur didn’t know. But now… you do.”
I gripped the phone. “If Marcus works for you… then you already have the evidence.”
“He does.” Julian’s voice turned cold. “And I’m burning it. Every page. Every file. Every recording. Gone. And you… you have nothing.”
“I’ll testify,” I said. “Arthur will testify. We’ll find another prosecutor.”
“Arthur is retired.” Julian’s tone was cruel. “And Arthur has a family. Think carefully before you drag anyone else into this. Walk away. Disappear. And I’ll let you live. Keep fighting… and everyone you love pays the price.”
The line went dead.
I stood motionless in the living room. Emma walked in, carrying Lily’s bag. She saw my face and stopped.
“What happened?”
“Marcus…” I struggled to speak. “He’s working for Julian.”
Emma dropped the bag. “No.”
“Julian has the evidence. He’s destroying it.” I sank into a chair. “Everything Dad risked his life to protect… gone.”
“Then we start over,” Emma said firmly. “We find another way.”
“There is no other way.” I looked up at her. “Julian reaches everywhere. He owns people like Marcus. He’ll destroy anyone who stands against him.”
“Then we don’t go through the system.” Emma sat beside me. “We go around it. We go to the press. We release what we still have. We tell the world exactly who Julian is and what he’s done. Let the public decide. Let the people demand answers.”

“And if he silences them too?”
“Then we keep fighting,” Emma said. “Because Dad didn’t give up. Lily’s mother didn’t give up. And neither will we.”
