Chapter 8 - THE STORY SHE TOLD

Three days later the newspapers began to print the story.

Vanessa had given interviews. She told the world about the marriage. She told the world about the fire. She told the world that Grace had been a troubled, dangerous woman who had run from her past.

She did not mention the scissors. She did not mention the lies. She presented herself as a grieving widow seeking justice.

And people believed her.

Friends called. Acquaintances sent messages. Some stood by me. Others asked quiet, terrible questions.

*Did you really know Grace?*

*What else did she hide?*

*Is Mia safe?*

Mia noticed the change. She felt the coldness. She saw the whispers.

"Why do people look at me like that?" she asked one evening.

"Because someone is telling lies," I said.

"About Mommy?"

"Yes."

"But she was good."

"She was perfect. And lies are just shadows. They fade."

But the shadows were growing long.

Vanessa gave one final interview. She stood before cameras and wept.

"Grace was not the woman everyone thinks she was. She carried guilt. She carried fear. And she passed both to her daughter. I am only trying to protect this child from becoming what her mother was."

When I saw that, I understood.

She was not just attacking Grace. She was attacking Mia. She was planting the idea that Mia was damaged. That she would one day be dangerous too.

I turned off the television.

Mia sat in the corner, quiet and small.

I went to her and knelt.

"Mia. Look at me."

She lifted her head.

"Nothing that woman says is true. You are not like her lies. You are kind. You are brave. You are Grace's daughter. And you are mine. Do not ever let anyone tell you otherwise."

Mia nodded slowly. But her eyes were sad.

"Will it ever stop?"

"Yes. When the truth comes out."

But the truth was buried deep. And Vanessa was doing everything in her power to keep it hidden.

That night I found one more thing in Grace's box. A small, worn diary. The pages were stained. The last entry was written the day before the fire.

*Elena is jealous. She says Thomas loves me more. I am afraid of what she might do. I need to keep everyone safe.*

I closed the diary.

Grace had been afraid of Elena even then.

And Elena had been punishing her ever since.

The realization settled in my chest like cold stone.

Vanessa had not come here to reveal secrets. She had come to punish Grace. Even from the grave.

And she was using Mia to do it.
