Chapter 15 - THE SILENCE AFTER

Days passed. Then weeks.

Vanessa kept her word. She did not return. There were no more messages. No more threats. No more whispers in the press. She vanished completely, as if she had never existed at all.

But the silence did not bring peace.

I could not stop thinking about what she had said. Had Grace chosen her own end? Had she kept one final secret from me?

I went to Clara. I told her what Vanessa had claimed.

Clara sat quietly for a long time. Then she nodded slowly.

"Grace was in terrible pain those last months. She told me once that she would not let her little girl remember her as a shadow. She said she wanted to leave while she was still strong enough to be loved." Clara looked at me gently. "She did not say what she intended. But I was afraid. And I said nothing."

So there was truth in Vanessa’s words. Terrible, unbearable truth.

Grace had chosen her own way. And she had asked the one person who would never say no to her—Vanessa.

I thought of everything then. The marriage. The deal. The warnings. The letter. Grace had known Vanessa would not let go. So she had given her a purpose. A promise. A reason to stay until the very end.

And then she had asked Vanessa to protect Mia. To protect us. Even from herself.

Vanessa had failed. She had broken. She had let jealousy consume her. But perhaps… just perhaps… she had tried.

I walked home slowly. Mia was waiting for me. She ran to the door when she heard my footsteps.

"Is she gone?"

"Yes, baby. She is gone."

"Will she come back?"

I knelt down and held her face in my hands.

May you like

"No. She will not come back. We are safe now."

Mia leaned against me, relieved. But I felt the weight of everything I had learned. Grace had carried all of it alone. Her illness. Her choice. Her dangerous love. And she had trusted me to forgive her when the truth finally emerged.
