Chapter 12 - THE CHOICE

That evening I sat by Mia's bed while she slept. I held Grace's letter in one hand and Clara's notebook in the other.
Everything was in place. We could destroy Vanessa. We could expose her as a liar, a manipulator, a killer. We could send her to prison for the rest of her life.
But there was a cost.
To prove Vanessa guilty of poisoning Grace, I would have to tell the world that Grace had been Elena's wife. I would have to tell the story of their life together. The secrets. The fears. The fire.
And Mia would hear it all. She would learn that her mother had hidden a marriage, a tragedy, a dangerous woman who had sworn to destroy everything she loved.
People would talk. They would judge. They would whisper. And Mia would carry it all.
I stood up and walked to the window. The moon was low and bright.
I had to choose.
Protect Grace's name—or protect Mia's peace.
I thought of what Grace had written. Protect Mia. Protect her with everything you have.
Grace had chosen Mia over her own reputation. She had hidden the truth to keep Mia safe. How could I do less?
But if I stayed silent… Vanessa would walk free. She would try again. She would never stop coming for us.
I paced the floor, torn apart.
Justice or mercy? Truth or safety?
Grace had faced the same choice. And she had chosen Mia.
I sank into the chair beside the bed. Mia turned in her sleep and smiled, reaching out. I took her hand.
"I will keep you safe," I whispered. "No matter what it costs me."
But how could I keep her safe if Vanessa remained free? How could I protect her from a shadow that never rested?
In that moment I realized Grace had not left me with only one choice. She had left me the means to make Vanessa disappear. Not by killing her. But by exposing her so completely that she could never show her face again.
And yet… Grace had also believed in redemption. She had given Vanessa chance after chance.
Maybe that was the choice Grace had been trying to leave me all along.
Offer Vanessa one last opportunity to walk away. Leave us forever. And we would stay silent about the poisoning. About the fire. About everything.
If she refused… then we would destroy her.

It was risky. It was dangerous. But it was the only choice that honored Grace's memory while protecting Mia's future.
I picked up the phone. And I called Vanessa.
