Chapter 10 - THE TRUTH ABOUT THAT NIGHT

I went to Marcus early the next morning.

"Find out exactly how Grace died," I said.

"We already know—"

"Find out everything. Every detail."

Two days later Marcus came to the safe house. He carried a thick folder. His face was pale.

"Adrian… Grace's medical records show something unusual."

He laid the papers on the table.

"Her heart did not simply fail. There were signs of poisoning. Slow. Difficult to detect. Easy to mistake for natural illness."

The room seemed to spin.

"Are you saying…"

"I am saying the signs are there. And Elena was the one who brought Grace her medicine every day. She was the one who prepared her food. She was the one who was there when you were at work."

I gripped the edge of the table.

Vanessa had killed Grace.

She had poisoned her slowly. Over months. Until Grace wasted away.

And then she had walked into our home as a grieving friend. As a caring wife. As the woman who would protect us.

I thought of Grace's letter. If Vanessa hurts Mia, it means I was right about her.

She had known. She had suspected. But she had been too weak, too kind, or too afraid to speak the truth aloud.

And she had left me to finish the fight.

Mia walked into the room then. She looked at our faces.

"Daddy?"

I wiped my eyes quickly.

"Everything is fine, sweetheart."

But it was not fine. Nothing would ever be fine again.

Vanessa had taken Grace from us. And then she had tried to take Mia. To take everything.

I stood up.

"We go to the final trial. And we tell everything."

Marcus nodded.

"She will try to destroy Grace's name completely."

"Let her. Because we will show the world exactly who she is. A liar. A thief. And a murderer."

I walked to the window. Somewhere out there Vanessa was waiting. Watching. Planning.

But I was ready now.

I had the truth. I had proof. And I had Mia.

She had taken Grace from us. But she would never take Mia.

And when the truth was finally told… she would pay for everything.
