Chapter 4 - THE SECRET IN THE PHOTOGRAPHS

Morning came gray and quiet. I woke with a heaviness in my chest that had nothing to do with lack of sleep.

Mia was already awake, sitting on the rug, looking through a box of things Grace had stored here. She pulled out an old photo album and set it on the low table.

"Look, Daddy. It's Mommy."

I sat beside her. The photographs were old. Grace at university. Grace on holiday. Grace laughing, young and bright and full of life.

Mia turned the pages slowly.

"She looks happy everywhere."

"She was. Especially when she was with you."

We reached a page showing Grace standing beside another woman. Dark hair, sharp smile, eyes that seemed to look right through the camera.

Mia pointed.

"That looks like…"

"Vanessa," I finished.

The photograph had been taken years ago. Grace and Elena—Vanessa—arm in arm. They looked close. Best friends.

I leaned in. On the back of the photo, in Grace's handwriting: Elena and I. The day we promised never to be apart.

My stomach turned over.

Grace had loved her. Truly loved her. And Elena had taken that love and twisted it into something cruel.

I kept turning pages. There were more photographs. Elena everywhere. At dinners. On trips. Standing close enough to be family.

And then I saw it.

One photograph slipped out from between the pages. I picked it up.

Grace and Elena, standing in front of a courthouse. Both holding flowers. Both smiling.

My heart stopped.

On the back, written in Elena's handwriting: The day we made it official. Forever yours, E.

I stared at the image. Grace had never mentioned this. Not once.

What had they made official?

I reached for my phone and called Marcus. He answered immediately.

"Meet me at the courthouse archives," I said. "Now."

I left Mia in the care of a trusted friend, promising to return soon. I drove to the city center with the photograph burning in my pocket.

Marcus was already waiting. We went inside and began searching.

It took three hours. And then we found it.

A marriage certificate. Dated twelve years earlier.

Grace Elizabeth Carter. And Elena Marie Morrison.

My hands shook as I read the words again and again.

Grace had married Elena.

I stepped back, my mind reeling. Impossible. It could not be true.

But the paper was real. Signed. Stamped. Official.

Marcus stood beside me, his voice quiet.

"Adrian…"

"Why would she never tell me?"

"Perhaps because Elena threatened her. Perhaps because she was afraid."

I thought of everything. The way Grace had always spoken of Elena. The fear in her letter. The deal she had made.

I walked out of the courthouse and leaned against the wall, gasping.

Grace had been married to Elena. Before she ever met me.

And Elena had come back not just for revenge. She had come as a wife. With claims. With rights.

I looked at the date of the marriage. And then at another date stamped in the corner.

There had been no divorce.

My blood turned to ice.

Grace had never signed the papers.

I stood there in the sunlight, unable to move. If there was no divorce… then legally, Elena was still Grace's spouse.

And that meant Elena could claim everything. Grace's estate. Her property. Her share of our home. Even custody of Mia.

That was why she had come. That was why she had married me—under false name—to confuse the records. To tie herself to our family until the day she chose to reveal the truth.

And then I understood her final warning.

*Ask what your perfect dead wife hid from you.*

She had meant this.

My phone buzzed. A message from Vanessa.

I opened it.

A photograph of the marriage certificate.

May you like

And beneath it:

*I told you she had secrets. And now I am coming to collect what is mine.*
