Chapter 19 - THE LESSONS LEARNED

Months passed. Seasons changed.
I learned that people are rarely only good or only evil. Vanessa had loved Grace with a terrible, consuming devotion. And that same love had turned into jealousy, rage, and destruction.
I learned that Grace had hidden the truth not out of shame, but out of protection. She had known that some secrets burn everyone they touch. So she had kept them close, waiting for the right moment to set them free.
I learned that forgiveness is not the same as forgetting. I would never excuse what Vanessa did. But I could understand the pain that had driven her. And I could choose to let her go, rather than carry hatred forever.
Most of all, I learned that Mia was stronger than I had ever imagined. She had faced cruelty, betrayal, and fear. And she had come through it all kinder, gentler, and braver than before.
She sat on the piano bench one evening, opening the music box. The melody filled the room. When it ended she looked up at Grace’s photograph.
"I forgive her," Mia said quietly.
I held my breath.
"Vanessa." Mia looked at me. "I forgive her. Because Mommy taught us to forgive."
My throat tightened.
May you like
"That is a very brave thing to do, Mia."
"It does not mean I have to be her friend," Mia added sensibly. "It just means I will not be afraid anymore."
