Chapter 13 - THE OFFER

Vanessa answered on the first ring.
"Have you decided to surrender?" she asked.
"I have decided to give you a choice."
Silence.
"Listen carefully. Walk away. Leave this city. Change your name. Never come near me or Mia again. And we keep your secrets. The marriage. The fire. The poisoning. Everything stays buried."
Vanessa laughed.
"You think I am afraid of secrets? I have lived with them for years."
"You will go to prison, Elena. For a very long time."
"Then tell the judge everything. Tell the world how your precious Grace married a woman. Tell them how she ran away. Tell them how she died."
"I will tell them how you killed her."
Vanessa went quiet.
"You cannot prove that."
"Clara can. The neighbor. She saw what happened that night. And she wrote it all down."
There was a sharp intake of breath.
"Clara is dead."
"She is alive. And she is ready to testify."
Silence stretched out. Long and brittle.
Vanessa spoke at last, her voice low and dangerous.
"You think you understand everything. But you do not know the whole story. Grace was not innocent. She knew exactly what she was doing. And she knew I would never let her go."
"Walk away, Elena. Or face the consequences."
"And if I walk away… you will never speak my name again?"
"You will vanish. And we will never mention you."
Vanessa was quiet for a long time. When she spoke again, her voice sounded broken.
"I loved her. I loved her more than you ever could. And she chose you. A stranger. A man who never understood her."
"I did not choose over you. Grace chose herself. And she chose Mia."
"She chose a life I could not give her," Vanessa whispered. "And I could not bear it."
"Then let her go now."
"Give me one thing," Vanessa said.
"What?"
"Give me the music box. The one Grace left Mia. It is all I ask."
I hesitated. The music box was where everything had begun. It held Grace's letter. It held the truth.
But if it set Mia free…
"I will bring it to you myself. Tomorrow. At the place where the fire happened. Come alone. And then you leave."
"Agreed."
"And Adrian?"
"Yes?"
May you like
"Do not betray me. Or I will tell Mia things no child should ever hear."
The line went dead.
