Chapter 9: The Woman Who Knew

Samuel was alive.

Barely.

The bullet had grazed his shoulder.

The detective pressed a folded piece of cloth against the wound.

“Stay with me.””

Samuel nodded through clenched teeth.

Marcus looked toward the open doorway.

Richard was gone.

So was the trust agreement.

Elena stood frozen beside the desk.

Marcus grabbed her hand.

“Are you okay?””

She nodded.

“Olivia.””

“We're going to find her.””

“But where?””

Marcus looked at the laptop.

The final message still glowed on the screen.

*DENISE CARTER.*

Then beneath it:

*But she isn't retired.*

Marcus took out his phone.

He called the number Samuel had given him.

A woman answered after the first ring.

“Hello?””

“Denise Carter?””

Silence.

Marcus continued.

“My name is Marcus Hale.””

The line went quiet.

Then:

“I know.””

Marcus's heart tightened.

“You know about Olivia?””

“I know about all of it.””

“Where is she?””

“I can't tell you.””

“Why?””

“Because Richard is listening.””

Marcus looked around the room.

“Then tell me how to find her.””

Another silence.

Denise whispered:

“Go to the old chapel.””

“What chapel?””

“The one behind St. Vincent's.””

Marcus frowned.

“I don't know it.””

“You do.””

He suddenly remembered.

His father's funeral.

A small stone chapel behind the cemetery.

He hadn't been there since he was twenty-eight.

“Why there?””

“Because that's where your father left the second key.””

Marcus looked at Elena.

“What key?””

Denise inhaled.

“The key to the trust.””

Marcus stared.

“There is no key.””

“There is.””

“To what?””

“The original ledger.””

Marcus's pulse quickened.

“What ledger?””

“The one that proves who stole the hospital.””

The detective looked at him.

Marcus whispered:

“Richard.””

“No,” Denise said.

Marcus froze.

“Then who?””

Denise's voice broke.

“Your father.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

“Your father didn't create the trust to protect money.””

“What did he create it for?””

“To expose himself.””

Marcus couldn't speak.

Denise continued.

“He knew the hospital had been built using money that wasn't clean.””

Marcus felt the room spin.

“What money?””

“Government grants.””

“Stolen?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

“Diverted.””

Marcus looked toward Elena.

She looked just as shocked.

Denise said:

“Your father discovered that Richard wasn't stealing from him.””

Marcus's voice dropped.

“Then what was he doing?””

“He was following orders.””

“Whose orders?””

Denise went silent.

Marcus felt dread settle over him.

“Denise.””

“I can't say it over the phone.””

“Then meet me.””

“I can't.””

“You've been hiding for twelve years.””

“I've been surviving.””

“You knew Elena was alive.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Olivia existed.””

“Yes.””

“You knew my father was investigating Richard.””

“Yes.””

“And you never came to me.””

Denise's voice trembled.

“I tried.””

“When?””

“The night your father died.””

Marcus froze.

“What happened?””

“I went to his office.””

“And?””

“He was already dead.””

“Who was there?””

“Richard.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Anyone else?””

Denise whispered:

“Vanessa.””

Marcus's eyes opened.

Elena looked at him.

Denise continued.

“She wasn't your father's killer.””

“Then why was she there?””

“She was looking for the same thing Richard was.””

“The trust.””

“No.””

Denise's voice became almost inaudible.

“She was looking for the ledger.””

Marcus looked toward the floor.

The missing ledger.

The key.

The chapel.

The trust.

Everything connected.

“What happened to it?””

“Your father gave it to me.””

Marcus's heart pounded.

“You have it?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn't you give it to the police?””

“Because the ledger names everyone involved.””

“That's what we need.””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because one of the names belongs to someone you still trust.””

Marcus went still.

“Who?””

Denise didn't answer.

“Tell me.””

“I can't.””

“Denise.””

“I'll meet you at the chapel.””

“When?””

“Twenty minutes.””

The line disconnected.

Marcus turned to the detective.

“Let's go.””

The detective shook his head.

“Your daughter is still missing.””

“I know.””

“And you want to walk into another trap?””

“I want the ledger.””

Elena stepped forward.

“I'll go.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

“You can't keep protecting me.””

“This isn't about you.””

“It is.””

She looked at him.

“Richard wants the ledger. If we find it first, we find Olivia.””

Marcus looked at the detective.

The officer finally nodded.

“Fine. But no one goes anywhere alone.””

They left the hospital through the rear entrance.

The rain had stopped.

The sky was turning black.

They reached the chapel in twelve minutes.

The building stood behind a cemetery wall.

Old stone.

Broken windows.

A wooden cross above the door.

Marcus pushed it open.

The inside smelled of dust and wax.

Elena walked beside him.

“I remember this place.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You came here with my father?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“The night before Liam was born.””

Marcus stopped.

“Why?””

“He wanted to tell you something.””

“What?””

“That he had made a mistake.””

Marcus frowned.

“What mistake?””

“He trusted Richard.””

They reached the altar.

Marcus searched the old wooden benches.

Nothing.

Elena noticed a brass plate beneath the altar.

She knelt.

“There.””

A tiny keyhole.

Marcus pulled out the brass key Liam had found.

He inserted it.

Click.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a black ledger.

Marcus lifted it.

The cover was worn.

His father's initials were embossed on it.

*M.H.*

Marcus opened the first page.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

Companies.

Hospital accounts.

Then he saw Richard's name.

Beside it was a number.

Not a payment.

A percentage.

*17%.*

Marcus turned the page.

More names.

More percentages.

Then one name stopped him.

*Vanessa Hale — 9%.*

Marcus stared.

Elena stepped closer.

“What?””

Marcus couldn't answer.

He turned another page.

There was another name.

*Daniel Mercer — 4%.*

Then another.

*Samuel Reed — 2%.*

Marcus looked toward the doorway.

The detective was reading over his shoulder.

“Everyone was paid.””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Not everyone.””

He pointed to the final page.

There was one name.

No percentage.

No payment.

Only a handwritten note.

*Primary beneficiary and controlling witness.*

Underneath:

*Olivia Brooks-Hale.*

Elena covered her mouth.

Marcus turned the page.

A folded document fell out.

He opened it.

It was a letter from his father.

*Marcus,*

*If you ever read this, I failed to protect you.*

Marcus's eyes burned.

*Richard believes the hospital belongs to him. It doesn't.*

*The trust belongs to Olivia because I made her the controlling witness.*

*But there is one condition.*

Marcus's hands trembled.

He read the next line.

*Olivia must voluntarily testify before the trust can be activated.*

Elena whispered:

“That's why they need her.””

Marcus nodded.

“They can't take the hospital without her.””

A sound came from behind them.

A slow clap.

Marcus turned.

Richard stood in the chapel doorway.

He wasn't holding a gun.

He didn't need one.

Beside him stood Daniel Mercer.

Bruised.

Bleeding.

And between them was Olivia.

Her hands were tied.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Olivia.””

She looked at him.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Dad.””

Marcus froze.

Richard smiled.

“Now you finally understand.””

Marcus tightened his grip on the ledger.

“What do you want?””

Richard pointed at the book.

“That.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You're not getting it.””

Richard's smile disappeared.

“Then Olivia dies.””

Olivia looked at Marcus.

“Don't give it to him.””

Marcus stared at her.

Richard grabbed her shoulder.

“Be quiet.””

Marcus took one step forward.

Richard raised a weapon.

“Another step and she dies.””

Marcus stopped.

The chapel fell silent.

Then Olivia looked directly at him and whispered:

“Dad, there's something Richard doesn't know.””

Richard turned toward her.

“What?””

Olivia smiled through her tears.

May you like

“I memorized every page of the ledger.””

Richard's face went completely white.
