Chapter 3: The Signature
Marcus called back immediately.
The number was unavailable.
He tried again.
Nothing.
“Olivia.””
His voice was barely audible.
Vanessa stood across the island, crying silently.
Marcus looked at her.
“Who was with her?””
“I don't know.””
“Don't lie to me.””
“I don't know.””
“You've known about her for two years.””
“I never spoke to her directly.””
“Then who did?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Richard.””
Marcus grabbed his coat from the chair.
“Where are you going?””
“To find my daughter.””
Vanessa moved toward him.
“Marcus, wait.””
He stopped.
“What?””
“There are things you don't understand.””
“I understand enough.””
“No, you don't.””
She reached for his arm.
He pulled away.
“Don't touch me.””
Her face collapsed.
“You're going to make things worse.””
“They've already lied to me for years.””
“You don't know what Richard is capable of.””
Marcus looked at her.
“I know exactly what he's capable of.””
He headed toward the hallway.
Then Liam appeared.
“Dad?””
Marcus stopped.
The boy stood on the bottom stair.
Marcus walked to him.
“Hey.””
“Are you leaving?””
“I have to take care of something.””
“Is it about me?””
Marcus crouched.
“No.””
Liam studied his face.
“Is Vanessa mad?””
Marcus glanced toward the kitchen.
“She doesn't get to decide whether you're loved.””
Liam's eyes filled.
Marcus put a hand on his shoulder.
“You hear me?””
The boy nodded.
“You're my son.””
“But she said—”
“I don't care what she said.””
Marcus pulled him into a hug.
Liam held on tightly.
“I don't want to go anywhere.””
“You're not going anywhere.””
Behind them, Vanessa whispered:
“Marcus.””
He turned.
She held a folded sheet of paper.
“You need to see this before you leave.””
Marcus walked back.
“What is it?””
“Something Richard sent me.””
She placed it on the island.
Marcus unfolded it.
It was a letter.
The first line made his stomach turn.
*Mr. Hale,*
*You have been financially supporting a child you do not know exists.*
Marcus looked up.
“What is this?””
Vanessa's voice shook.
“Read it.””
He continued.
The letter claimed Olivia had been placed under a private guardianship arrangement.
It claimed Marcus had signed away certain parental rights years earlier.
It claimed he had agreed never to contact her.
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“I never signed this.””
“I know.””
He looked at the signature.
It was almost perfect.
Almost.
Marcus noticed the final stroke.
His real signature always ended sharply upward.
This one curved downward.
A small difference.
But he knew his own hand.
“Where did this come from?””
“Richard.””
“Why did he send it to you?””
“He wanted money.””
“How much?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Two hundred thousand dollars.””
Marcus stared.
“And you paid him?””
“Some.””
“How much?””
“Seventy-five.””
“With my money.””
Vanessa nodded.
Marcus's face hardened.
“Why?””
“Because he threatened to tell Olivia that you abandoned her.””
Marcus looked toward Liam.
The boy had gone upstairs.
Good.
He turned back.
“What else?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“There's more.””
“There always is.””
She opened the folder again.
This time, she removed a small envelope.
No name.
No return address.
Only a date.
Marcus recognized it.
The date was three years ago.
The year Liam's mother supposedly died.
He opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
A woman stood outside a courthouse.
Beside her was a teenage girl.
Olivia.
And beside Olivia was another man.
Richard.
Marcus stared at the picture.
“Why was Richard with her?””
“I told you. He found her.””
“No.””
Marcus pointed at the photograph.
“This was three years ago.””
Vanessa didn't answer.
“You said he found her two years ago.””
She looked down.
Marcus's voice sharpened.
“When did Richard first find Olivia?””
“I don't know.””
“Vanessa.””
“I don't know!””
Marcus slammed the photograph down.
“Then who does?””
Silence.
He looked through the folder again.
Bank statements.
Addresses.
School records.
A medical insurance card.
A birth certificate.
He picked up the birth certificate.
His eyes moved across the page.
Father:
*Marcus Hale.*
Mother:
*Elena Brooks.*
He stopped.
Elena.
Liam's mother.
Marcus read it again.
Then a third time.
His hands began shaking.
“Vanessa.””
She didn't look at him.
“Elena didn't die.””
“No.””
“She was Olivia's mother.””
“Yes.””
“And Liam's mother.””
“Yes.””
Marcus backed away.
For years, he had believed Elena had died after leaving the hospital following Liam's birth.
He had been told there was an accident.
He had been shown a death certificate.
He had buried a woman he loved.
He had raised Liam alone before Vanessa entered their lives.
But now—
He looked at the birth certificate.
“How many lies are there?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Too many.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Is Elena alive?””
Vanessa said nothing.
“Is she?””
“I don't know.””
“You know.””
“I don't.””
Marcus walked toward her.
“Where is she?””
“I don't know.””
“Who has her?””
Vanessa's eyes filled again.
“I don't know.””
Marcus suddenly noticed another piece of paper beneath the folder.
An envelope.
This one had his name handwritten across it.
*Marcus.*
He pulled it free.
Vanessa grabbed his wrist.
“Don't.””
Marcus looked at her hand.
“Why?””
“Because that was supposed to stay hidden.””
He pulled the envelope away.
“From me?””
“Yes.””
He opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
The ink had faded.
The first sentence was enough to make his knees weaken.
*Marcus, if you are reading this, then Vanessa finally failed to keep you away from us.*
He looked up.
“Us?””
Vanessa began shaking her head.
Marcus kept reading.
*I didn't abandon you.*
His breathing stopped.
*I was made to disappear.*
He looked at Vanessa.
She was crying now.
Not pretending.
Not angry.
Terrified.
Marcus read the next line.
*Richard told me that if I ever came back, Liam would be taken from you and Olivia would disappear forever.*
Marcus's hand tightened around the paper.
There was one final paragraph.
He read it slowly.
*I left proof with someone I trusted. If you ever find this letter, go to the old house on Bellamy Road. Look beneath the third floorboard in the room where Liam slept as a baby.*
Marcus stared at the address.
Bellamy Road.
He knew that house.
His old house.
The house where Liam had been born.
The house he had sold years ago.
He looked at Vanessa.
“Who owns it now?””
She whispered:
“Richard.””
Marcus's phone vibrated.
A message.
Unknown number.
He opened it.
One sentence.
*If you want the truth about Elena, come alone.*
A second message appeared immediately after.
*And bring the original receipt.*
Marcus stared at the screen.
Then at the receipt lying on the marble island.
For the first time, he understood.
The thirty thousand dollars had never been about clothes.
May you like
It had been a payment.
And whoever had sent the message knew exactly what was on that receipt.
