Chapter 1: The Folder

Vanessa moved the purse only an inch.

But Marcus noticed.

He stared at the cream-colored folder beneath it.

“What’s that?””

“Nothing.””

“Then move your purse.””

Vanessa’s fingers tightened around the strap.

“Why are you suddenly obsessed with everything on this counter?””

“Because you’re acting like I just caught you stealing.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“I’m your wife, Marcus.””

“And Liam is my son.””

The kitchen went silent.

Brandon shifted his weight.

Kayden looked at the floor.

Liam remained pressed against Marcus’s side, his small fingers gripping the fabric of Marcus’s shirt.

Marcus reached toward the folder.

Vanessa grabbed it first.

“No.””

That single word landed harder than anything she had said all morning.

Marcus stared at her hand.

“Give it to me.””

“It’s private.””

“In my house?””

“It’s personal.””

“Then why was it sitting beside the receipt?””

Vanessa’s face changed.

Just for a second.

Fear.

Then anger covered it.

“You’re embarrassing me.””

Marcus held out his hand.

“Folder.””

She didn’t move.

“Vanessa.””

“No.””

Marcus looked at the boys.

“Brandon. Kayden. Take Liam upstairs.””

Vanessa immediately objected.

“No, they’re staying here.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“Why?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Marcus looked at Brandon.

“Take your brothers upstairs.””

Brandon nodded.

“Come on.””

Liam hesitated.

Marcus crouched beside him.

“You’re okay.””

The boy looked at Vanessa.

Then at Marcus.

“I’m okay?””

“You’re with me.””

Liam nodded slowly.

The three boys disappeared toward the staircase.

Their footsteps faded.

Marcus waited until they were gone.

Then he looked at his wife.

“Now give me the folder.””

Vanessa hugged it against her chest.

“You don’t trust me.””

“I trusted you enough to give you control over our household finances.””

“And now you’re punishing me because I bought my children nice things?””

“You’re avoiding the question.””

“I already answered it.””

“No. You didn’t.””

She walked toward the sink.

Marcus followed.

“Where did the money go?””

“I told you. Clothes. School. Activities.””

“Thirty thousand dollars?””

“Do you know how expensive teenagers are?””

“Not thirty thousand dollars in three weeks.””

Vanessa spun around.

“You think I’m stealing from you?””

Marcus stared at her.

“I think I’m missing information.””

“That’s the same accusation.””

“No.””

His voice was quieter now.

“If I thought you stole from me, I’d already be calling the bank.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Then what are you saying?””

“I’m saying something doesn’t add up.””

She looked toward the staircase.

“You’re letting Liam manipulate you.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

“He knows exactly how to make you feel sorry for him.””

Marcus slowly shook his head.

“Don’t do that.””

“I’m telling you the truth.””

“No. You’re blaming a twelve-year-old because you don’t want to answer me.””

“He has always been difficult.””

Marcus stared at her.

“He has always been quiet.””

“Exactly.””

“That isn’t the same thing.””

Vanessa looked away.

Marcus walked back to the island.

The receipt was still there.

He picked it up.

At the bottom was a handwritten notation.

Three initials.

B.K.

Then another line.

*Private delivery — M. Residence.*

Marcus frowned.

“What does M. Residence mean?””

Vanessa went pale.

“I don’t know.””

“You just said you bought these for the boys.””

“I did.””

“Then why were they delivered somewhere else?””

She reached for the receipt.

Marcus pulled it away.

“Where?””

“I said I don’t know.””

“Who ordered them?””

“I did.””

“From where?””

“Several places.””

“Why does the receipt say private delivery?””

Vanessa’s breathing changed.

Marcus noticed.

He had spent years learning how people behaved when numbers were involved.

People could lie with their mouths.

Their bodies were worse at it.

He looked at the cream folder again.

“Open it.””

“No.””

“Vanessa.””

“No.””

Marcus reached for it.

She stepped back.

The folder slipped from her hand.

It hit the marble.

Papers spilled across the floor.

One page landed face-up.

Marcus saw his own name.

*MARCUS HALE*

Below it was a line that made his stomach tighten.

*Beneficiary Revision — Pending*

He picked it up.

Vanessa lunged.

“Don’t!””

Marcus held it away.

“What is this?””

“Give me that.””

“What beneficiary revision?””

“It’s nothing.””

“You keep saying that.””

He looked at the next page.

Life insurance.

Property documents.

Investment accounts.

A marriage agreement.

Then one sentence near the bottom caught his eye.

*In the event of separation...*

Marcus stopped reading.

He looked at Vanessa.

“Why do you have a separation agreement?””

Her silence answered before she did.

“It was just a draft.””

“Who drafted it?””

“I was protecting myself.””

“From me?””

“From what happens if things go wrong.””

Marcus laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“Things have already gone wrong.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Marcus, listen to me.””

He held up the page.

“You lied about the laptop.””

“I can explain.””

“You lied about the money.””

“I can explain.””

“And now you have documents about separating from me.””

“I said I can explain!””

Marcus looked toward the staircase.

Liam was standing there.

He had come back without either adult noticing.

His face was pale.

Marcus folded the papers.

“Liam, go upstairs.””

The boy didn't move.

“Dad?””

Marcus softened immediately.

“Yes?””

“Am I going somewhere?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Marcus felt something cold settle in his chest.

“Why would you ask that?””

Liam looked at Vanessa.

“She said I might.””

Vanessa’s head snapped toward him.

“Liam!””

Marcus stepped forward.

“What did she say?””

Liam’s voice became smaller.

“She said after Christmas I might go live somewhere else.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“What?””

“It was a misunderstanding.””

“Where?””

“I never said that.””

Liam nodded quickly.

“You did.””

Vanessa pointed at him.

“Go upstairs.””

Marcus moved between them.

“No.””

His voice was calm.

Dead calm.

“You're not sending him anywhere.””

Vanessa stared at him.

Then her expression changed.

Not anger.

Something closer to panic.

Marcus looked at the papers in his hand.

Then at the receipt.

Then at the woman he had trusted with his home, his children, and his money.

“Tell me the truth.””

Vanessa whispered:

“You're not ready to hear it.””

Marcus took one step toward her.

“Try me.””

She stared at him.

May you like

Then slowly said four words that changed everything.

“Liam isn't your only son.””
