Chapter 5: The Man in the Hallway

Marcus raised both hands.

“Richard.””

Richard stood halfway up the stairs.

Rainwater glistened on his coat.

The gun remained pointed at Marcus.

Liam stood behind his father.

Richard's eyes moved toward the boy.

“You brought Liam.””

Marcus shifted slightly, blocking his view.

“Don't look at him.””

Richard smiled.

“You still protect him.””

“Put the gun down.””

“You know I can't do that.””

“Then you're going to have to shoot me.””

Richard's smile disappeared.

“Don't tempt me.””

Marcus glanced at the hallway.

There was nowhere to run.

The only staircase was behind Richard.

The window was too high.

The old floorboards creaked beneath Liam's shoes.

Marcus kept his voice calm.

“What do you want?””

“The receipt.””

“Why?””

“Because it proves something.””

“What?””

“That Vanessa paid someone.””

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

Richard said nothing.

Marcus took one step forward.

“Thirty thousand dollars.””

Richard nodded.

“Twenty-nine thousand, eight hundred forty-six dollars and seventy-two cents.””

“You know the exact amount.””

“I should.””

Marcus's pulse quickened.

“You made the purchase.””

Richard's jaw tightened.

“No.””

“You ordered those clothes.””

“I said no.””

“Then how do you know the exact amount?””

Richard stared at him.

“Because I was there when the money changed hands.””

Marcus felt the pieces move.

“Who got the money?””

Richard didn't answer.

“Was it Daniel Mercer?””

Richard's silence was enough.

Marcus whispered:

“Daniel.””

Richard looked toward the metal box.

“You found it.””

Marcus's expression hardened.

“So you knew it was here.””

“Of course.””

“Then why didn't you take it?””

Richard smiled.

“Because I needed you to find it.””

Marcus felt a chill.

“What?””

Richard lowered the gun slightly.

“You wouldn't have believed me.””

“You've lied to me for years.””

“I know.””

“You told me Elena was dead.””

Richard said nothing.

“You told me Olivia didn't exist.””

“I never said she didn't exist.””

“You hid her.””

“I protected her.””

“From me?””

“From what would happen if you found out.””

Marcus's voice became dangerous.

“You don't get to call kidnapping protection.””

Richard's face hardened.

“You don't know what Elena did.””

“Then tell me.””

“She left you.””

“No.””

“She left.””

“You made her disappear.””

Richard's eyes flickered.

“That's what she told you?””

“She wrote me a letter.””

Richard's expression changed.

“Where is it?””

Marcus smiled without humor.

“Why?””

“Give it to me.””

“No.””

Richard raised the gun again.

Liam whispered:

“Dad.””

Marcus didn't look back.

“It's okay.””

Richard's eyes stayed on Marcus.

“You should've stayed away.””

“You should've left my family alone.””

“Your family?””

Richard laughed.

“You mean Vanessa?””

Marcus said nothing.

Richard continued.

“Do you know why she married you?””

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“Don't.””

“She wasn't looking for love.””

“Richard.””

“She was looking for access.””

Marcus felt something inside him go numb.

“Access to what?””

Richard smiled.

“Your accounts.””

Marcus remembered the transfers.

The expensive clothes.

The folder.

The beneficiary paperwork.

“That's why she married me?””

Richard didn't answer.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

“Did she?””

Richard hesitated.

Then:

“She knew enough.””

Marcus's eyes hardened.

“Did Vanessa know about Olivia?””

“She knew.””

“Did she know Elena was alive?””

“Yes.””

“Did she know about the guardianship?””

“Yes.””

Marcus closed his eyes for a second.

Every lie had been sitting inside his house.

At his kitchen table.

Eating dinner with his son.

Richard suddenly pointed the gun toward the metal box.

“Give me the box.””

Marcus didn't move.

“Why?””

“Because it contains evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

Richard's voice dropped.

“Who actually owns Olivia's trust.””

Marcus frowned.

“What trust?””

Richard smiled.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“You still don't know.””

Richard took a step onto the third floor.

“Olivia inherited money.””

Marcus stared.

“From Elena?””

“No.””

“From whom?””

“Your father.””

Marcus froze.

His father had died before Olivia was born.

Richard continued.

“Your father created a trust before he died. A very large one.””

Marcus shook his head.

“My father never mentioned a trust.””

“He didn't want you to know.””

“Why?””

“Because he knew you'd give it away.””

“To Olivia?””

“To both children.””

Marcus's mind raced.

“Then why was Liam treated like this?””

Richard smiled coldly.

“Because Vanessa wanted the trust.””

Liam's breathing changed.

Marcus turned slightly.

“Don't listen.””

Richard laughed.

“Why not? He deserves to know.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Shut up.””

“Your wife spent years trying to make Liam look irresponsible.””

Richard's eyes moved toward Liam.

“She wanted custody.””

Marcus's stomach dropped.

“She wanted to take Liam away from you.””

“She couldn't.””

“She almost did.””

Marcus remembered the guardianship documents.

Richard continued.

“The plan was simple.””

“What plan?””

“Make you look unstable. Make Liam look neglected. Then use the guardianship paperwork to separate you.””

Marcus stared.

“But why?””

“Because the trust has a condition.””

Richard smiled.

“If you're declared unfit, Vanessa gets control of the money.””

Marcus's face went cold.

“And Olivia?””

“Her existence complicates everything.””

“Because she's the beneficiary.””

“Exactly.””

Marcus looked at the metal box.

The photographs.

The letters.

The USB drive.

“How much?””

Richard's smile returned.

“Enough to make people disappear.””

Liam whispered:

“Dad…”

Marcus turned.

“Stay behind me.””

Richard moved closer.

“Give me the receipt.””

Marcus pulled it from his pocket.

He held it up.

“This?””

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at the printed total.

Then at Richard.

“You're afraid of this piece of paper.””

Richard's expression tightened.

“Give it to me.””

“Why?””

“Because it has a name on it.””

Marcus looked down.

The receipt had been folded several times.

He opened it.

At the bottom, beneath the purchases, was a delivery reference.

He read it.

Then his blood ran cold.

The recipient wasn't Vanessa.

It wasn't Brandon.

It wasn't Kayden.

It wasn't even Richard.

It said:

*ELENA BROOKS.*

Marcus looked at Richard.

“You bought these for Elena.””

Richard's face changed.

Marcus understood.

The clothes weren't gifts.

They were bait.

The money wasn't simply being spent.

Someone had been keeping Elena supplied.

Marcus's eyes moved to the second envelope.

*For Olivia.*

He suddenly understood why Richard wanted the box.

It wasn't just evidence.

It was proof that Elena had survived.

And proof that Olivia was connected to the trust.

Richard raised the gun.

“Enough.””

Marcus took one step backward.

“Where is Elena?””

Richard's jaw clenched.

“Give me the receipt.””

“Where is she?””

“Marcus.””

“Where?””

Richard's finger tightened around the trigger.

A loud crash came from downstairs.

Richard turned.

For one second, his attention broke.

Marcus moved.

He shoved the gun hand aside.

The shot exploded through the hallway.

Liam screamed.

The bullet struck the wall.

Marcus tackled Richard.

They crashed into the floor.

The gun slid beneath the bed frame.

Richard punched Marcus in the ribs.

Marcus grabbed his wrist.

“Where is Elena?””

Richard struck him again.

“She's already dead.””

Marcus froze.

Richard smiled.

“You're too late.””

Then footsteps thundered from downstairs.

Someone shouted:

“Police! Drop the weapon!””

Richard's smile vanished.

Marcus looked toward the staircase.

Police.

Richard looked at him.

Then whispered:

“You brought them.””

Marcus shook his head.

“I didn't.””

Richard's face went white.

A second voice shouted from downstairs.

“Marcus Hale! Step away from him!””

Marcus looked at Richard.

Richard stared toward the stairs.

May you like

And then he whispered:

“She's here.””
