Chapter 8: The Original Agreement

Marcus followed Samuel through the darkened corridor.

Emergency lights cast red bands across the walls.

Every few seconds, the building hummed as backup systems struggled to come online.

Elena stayed beside him.

The detective and two officers followed several steps behind.

Samuel stopped at a steel security door.

“Beyond this is the old records level.””

Marcus looked at the keypad.

“Can you open it?””

Samuel entered six numbers.

The lock clicked.

The door opened.

Cold air rushed over them.

The hallway beyond was narrow.

Dust covered the floor.

Old hospital signs hung crookedly from the ceiling.

*ARCHIVES.*

*AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY.*

*M-17.*

Marcus stared at the last sign.

“How long has this place been sealed?””

“Eleven years,” Samuel said.

“Then how was Olivia brought here?””

Samuel looked at him.

“The room wasn't sealed.””

Marcus frowned.

“The hospital sealed the corridor.””

He pointed down.

“Someone reopened it from inside.””

The detective stepped forward.

“Daniel?””

Samuel nodded.

“He has access to the old security system.””

Marcus stopped.

“You said he was the trustee.””

“He was.””

“Was?””

Samuel's face tightened.

“Until this morning.””

Marcus looked at him.

“What happened this morning?””

“Daniel transferred the trust.””

“To whom?””

Samuel didn't answer.

Marcus grabbed his shoulder.

“To whom?””

Samuel looked toward Elena.

“Richard.””

Elena's face went white.

Marcus released him.

“No.””

Samuel nodded.

“Daniel signed the transfer at 6:40 this morning.””

Marcus checked his phone.

The first suspicious transfer from Vanessa's account had been made weeks earlier.

The designer purchases had happened afterward.

This had been planned.

For months.

Maybe years.

Marcus looked at Elena.

“Why would Daniel transfer the trust to Richard?””

“He wouldn't.””

Samuel shook his head.

“He was forced.””

The detective asked:

“By whom?””

Samuel's answer was quiet.

“Vanessa.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

Elena closed her eyes.

Marcus turned toward her.

“Tell me.””

Elena whispered:

“She threatened Daniel.””

“With what?””

“She had the guardianship documents.””

Marcus felt the anger returning.

“So Vanessa was working with Richard.””

“No.””

Elena shook her head.

“She was trying to stop him.””

Marcus stopped.

“What?””

“Vanessa found out Richard planned to take Olivia.””

“Then why did she lie to me?””

“Because she was trying to protect Liam.””

Marcus stared.

Elena continued.

“She thought if you knew Olivia was alive, Richard would use Liam against you.””

Marcus remembered Vanessa's words.

He knows exactly how to make you feel sorry for him.

You're going to make things worse.

Don't trust the first person who says they love you.

He had mistaken fear for guilt.

But there was still the money.

The thirty thousand dollars.

Marcus looked at Samuel.

“What was Vanessa buying?””

Samuel reached into his coat.

He pulled out a copy of the receipt.

“Not clothes.””

Marcus took it.

The same amount.

The same date.

But beneath the total was a different description.

*Emergency relocation supplies.*

Marcus stared.

“The original receipt was altered.””

Samuel nodded.

“Vanessa paid for a safe house.””

“For Olivia?””

“For Elena.””

Marcus looked at Elena.

She nodded.

“I was supposed to leave the country.””

“But you didn't.””

“I couldn't leave Olivia.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

The entire meaning of the receipt changed.

Then he remembered the message.

*Bring the original receipt.*

Someone wanted proof that Vanessa had been helping them.

Not evidence of theft.

Evidence of betrayal.

Richard wanted the receipt because it could prove Vanessa had turned against him.

Marcus looked at the detective.

“We need Vanessa.””

The detective nodded.

“I'll send a unit.””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“If Richard knows we're here, he may already know where she is.””

The detective's radio crackled.

A voice shouted through static.

“Officer down in the east lobby.””

Marcus froze.

Then another message.

“Suspect leaving through underground access.””

Samuel's face tightened.

“Richard.””

Marcus looked toward the records corridor.

“No.””

He ran.

They reached M-17.

The door was open.

Inside, a single chair sat beneath a hanging light.

Olivia was gone.

Marcus's heart stopped.

“Elena!””

She rushed inside.

“No.””

A laptop sat on the desk.

Beside it was a folder.

Marcus opened it.

The first page was the trust agreement.

Original.

Stamped.

Signed by his father.

The beneficiary was Olivia.

The second beneficiary was Liam.

Marcus stared.

“They were both protected.””

Elena nodded.

“Your father knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That Richard would come after them.””

Marcus turned the page.

There was a handwritten note.

*If Marcus is ever told Elena died, assume Richard has acted.*

Marcus's hands shook.

His father had known.

He had tried to warn him.

Then Marcus found another document.

A medical record.

*Patient: Elena Brooks.*

Date: twelve years earlier.

Status:

*Alive.*

He looked at Elena.

“You were never declared dead.””

“No.””

“Then who created the death certificate?””

“Richard.””

Marcus turned another page.

A list of names.

Doctors.

Nurses.

Administrators.

One name was circled.

*Vanessa Hale.*

Marcus stared.

“Why is your name here?””

Elena's face changed.

“I don't know.””

The detective took the document.

“There's more.””

He pointed to a second line.

*Witness: Denise Carter.*

Marcus frowned.

“Who is Denise Carter?””

Samuel answered.

“A nurse.””

“Where is she?””

“Retired.””

“Alive?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Samuel gave him an address.

Marcus memorized it.

Then the laptop screen suddenly turned on.

A video began playing.

Daniel Mercer appeared.

His face was bruised.

His hands were tied behind him.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Marcus, if you're watching this, Richard has the trust.””

Marcus stepped closer.

Daniel continued.

“I tried to stop him.””

A door slammed somewhere behind him.

Daniel looked over his shoulder.

“I failed.””

He took a breath.

“Olivia is alive.””

Marcus's throat tightened.

“She knows the truth now.””

Daniel looked terrified.

“And that's why Richard will never let her leave.””

The video flickered.

Daniel leaned closer.

“There's one person who can expose him.””

The screen went black.

A message appeared.

*DENISE CARTER.*

Marcus stared.

Then another line appeared.

*But she isn't retired.*

The door behind them slammed shut.

Everyone turned.

The detective drew his weapon.

A voice came from the corridor.

“Drop your weapons.””

Marcus recognized it.

Richard.

Then the lights went out.

A gunshot exploded.

Elena screamed.

May you like

When the emergency lights returned, Samuel was on the floor.

And the trust agreement was gone.
