Chapter 6: The Woman at the Door
Marcus stopped breathing.
“Who?””
Richard's eyes remained fixed on the staircase.
“She's here.””
The police rushed onto the third floor.
One officer grabbed Richard and pulled his arms behind him.
“Hands where I can see them!””
Richard resisted.
“You don't understand.””
“Get on the floor!””
Another officer found the gun beneath the bed.
Marcus stood slowly.
His ribs burned.
Liam ran into him.
“Dad!””
Marcus wrapped both arms around his son.
“Are you hurt?””
Liam shook his head.
“No.””
“You sure?””
“Yes.””
Marcus kissed the top of his head.
Then he looked toward the staircase.
A woman stood there.
Two officers had moved aside to let her through.
She wore a dark coat.
Her hair was shorter than Marcus remembered.
There were silver strands around her temples.
She looked thinner.
Older.
But Marcus knew her.
His body recognized her before his mind did.
“Elena?””
The woman stopped.
Her eyes filled.
“Marcus.””
His knees nearly gave out.
Liam stared at her.
“Mom?””
Elena looked at him.
Her face broke.
“Oh, my God.””
She covered her mouth.
Liam stepped forward.
Marcus held his hand.
Elena descended the last few stairs.
She stopped several feet away.
“I wanted to come sooner.””
Marcus couldn't speak.
“You were alive.””
“Yes.””
“You let me believe you were dead.””
Elena shook her head.
“I didn't.””
Marcus's voice cracked.
“Then who did?””
She looked at Richard.
Richard stared at the floor.
“His name was the first lie.””
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
“He told you I died.””
Richard suddenly shouted:
“Don't listen to her!””
An officer pushed him down.
“Quiet.””
Elena looked back at Marcus.
“I never left because I wanted to.””
Marcus swallowed.
“What happened?””
She took a breath.
“After Liam was born, I found the trust documents.””
Marcus stared.
“My father's trust.””
She nodded.
“Your father knew something was wrong with Richard.””
“Why didn't he tell me?””
“He tried.””
Marcus remembered an old voicemail.
His father had called three days before his death.
Marcus had been overseas.
The message had simply said:
*We need to talk about Elena.*
Marcus had never understood it.
Elena continued.
“Your father discovered that Richard had been moving money from one of his companies.””
Marcus looked at Richard.
Richard's face was expressionless.
“He was stealing?””
Elena nodded.
“And your father was going to expose him.””
“What happened?””
“He died.””
Marcus's stomach tightened.
“Are you saying Richard killed my father?””
Richard laughed.
“That's ridiculous.””
Elena didn't look at him.
“I don't know who killed him.””
Marcus stared.
“But?””
“But Richard was the last person my father met.””
Richard shouted:
“She has no proof!””
Elena looked at the metal box.
“Yes, I do.””
Marcus turned.
The USB drive.
He picked it up.
“What is on this?””
“Your father's final records.””
“Why didn't you take it to the police?””
“I tried.””
“When?””
“Three years ago.””
Marcus frowned.
“Three years ago?””
Elena nodded.
“I contacted someone I trusted.””
“Who?””
“Daniel Mercer.””
Marcus felt the pieces click again.
“Daniel was working for you?””
“He was supposed to help.””
“What happened?””
“He disappeared.””
Marcus looked at Richard.
Richard smiled.
“He was bought.””
Elena nodded slowly.
“I realized I couldn't trust anyone.””
Marcus's eyes hardened.
“So you stayed hidden.””
“I had Olivia.””
“Where is she?””
Elena's face changed.
“She was supposed to be safe.””
“Supposed to be?””
Elena looked at the officers.
One of them approached.
“Mr. Hale, there's something you need to see.””
He held out a phone.
“We recovered this from Mr. Mercer.””
Marcus took it.
The screen showed a recent message.
*Payment received. Transfer Olivia tonight.*
Marcus looked at Elena.
“Transfer her where?””
Elena's face went white.
“I don't know.””
Marcus turned to the officer.
“When was this sent?””
“Twenty-three minutes ago.””
Marcus's heart raced.
“Who received it?””
“We're trying to trace the number.””
Elena grabbed Marcus's arm.
“Olivia.””
“I'll find her.””
“She was calling you.””
“I know.””
“She told me she had found the originals.””
Marcus looked at her.
“She found the original documents?””
“Yes.””
“What originals?””
“The guardianship agreement.””
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
“The one with my forged signature.””
Elena nodded.
“That's not the only forged document.””
“What else?””
“The death certificate.””
Marcus stared.
“My death certificate?””
Elena shook her head.
“Mine.””
Marcus felt the room go silent.
“You never died.””
“No.””
“Then whose body?””
Elena looked away.
“I don't know.””
Richard suddenly laughed.
“You're finally putting it together.””
Marcus turned toward him.
“What?””
Richard looked almost relieved.
“Your wife didn't spend thirty thousand dollars on clothes.””
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“I know.””
“She spent it buying time.””
“For what?””
Richard smiled.
“For Olivia.””
Marcus stared.
Richard continued.
“Vanessa knew the girl was going to run.””
Elena whispered:
“She was supposed to help her.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa's sister's brother.
“Then why did Vanessa lie to me?””
Richard's smile faded.
“Because she changed her mind.””
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
Richard said nothing.
Marcus stepped closer.
“You used my wife.””
“No.””
“You used her to move money.””
“No.””
“You used her to control Liam.””
Richard's expression hardened.
“She chose.””
Marcus shook his head.
“She was afraid of you.””
“She was afraid of losing everything.””
Marcus remembered Vanessa's panic.
The folder.
The beneficiary documents.
The transfers.
The clothes.
Suddenly one detail stood out.
“Why did you need the receipt?””
Richard looked at him.
“Because Vanessa paid Elena.””
“No.””
Marcus held up the paper.
“The receipt was in Vanessa's possession.””
Richard didn't respond.
“Vanessa didn't buy those things.””
Elena's face changed.
Marcus looked at her.
“Did you?””
She nodded.
“For Olivia.””
Marcus frowned.
“Why would Olivia need designer clothes?””
“She didn't.””
“Then who?””
Elena looked toward Richard.
“For the person helping us.””
Marcus stared.
Richard's expression went blank.
Elena continued.
“Someone inside Richard's operation has been feeding us information.””
“Who?””
Elena shook her head.
“I never knew the name.””
Marcus looked at the receipt again.
The delivery address.
The initials.
The private delivery.
Then he noticed something he hadn't seen before.
A tiny code printed beneath the total.
*M-17.*
He showed it to Elena.
“What is this?””
She stared.
Then whispered:
“That's not a delivery code.””
“What is it?””
“It's a room number.””
Marcus's blood ran cold.
“Where?””
Elena looked at him.
“At the hospital.””
Marcus frowned.
“Which hospital?””
She didn't answer immediately.
Then:
“Ashford Memorial.””
Marcus stared.
“Why would someone hide Olivia in a hospital?””
“They didn't.””
Elena took the receipt from his hand.
She turned it over.
There was a faint embossed mark on the back.
A hospital seal.
Marcus looked at the officer.
“Can you trace this?””
“We'll try.””
Elena shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She pointed at the code.
“It's not where Olivia is.””
Marcus frowned.
“Then what is it?””
Elena's voice became barely audible.
“It's where they kept the original evidence.””
Marcus stared.
“The evidence against Richard?””
Elena nodded.
“Your father's records. The original trust. The real guardianship papers.””
Marcus looked toward Richard.
Richard had stopped smiling.
For the first time, he looked genuinely afraid.
Marcus stepped closer.
“You knew.””
Richard said nothing.
“You knew the records were at Ashford.””
Richard's eyes moved toward Elena.
Then toward Marcus.
He whispered:
“You shouldn't have found her.””
Marcus's phone vibrated.
A new message.
Unknown number.
He opened it.
There was no text.
Only a photograph.
Olivia.
She was sitting in a dark room.
Her hands were tied.
Marcus's blood froze.
A second photograph arrived.
A clock.
A concrete wall.
And beneath it, handwritten in black marker:
*ROOM M-17.*
Elena gasped.
Marcus stared at the image.
Then another message appeared.
*You have one hour.*
May you like
A final line followed.
*Come alone, or Olivia disappears like her mother did.*
