Chapter 10: The Name at the Bottom

Richard's expression changed before Marcus even moved.

For the first time that night, the man who had controlled everyone else's fear looked afraid himself.

“You're lying,” Richard said.

Olivia shook her head.

“No.””

Richard tightened his grip on her shoulder.

“I watched you for weeks.””

“I know.””

“You never saw the ledger.””

“I didn't need to.””

Richard stared at her.

Olivia's voice remained steady.

“My grandfather taught me something before he died.””

Marcus felt his breath catch.

“Your grandfather?””

Olivia nodded.

“He said people who hide evidence usually protect the first pages.””

Richard frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means you never read the whole book.””

Richard looked toward Marcus.

Then back at Olivia.

“What did you memorize?””

“Everything that mattered.””

Marcus held the ledger against his chest.

Richard lifted his weapon.

“Give me the book.””

Marcus didn't move.

Olivia spoke again.

“Page thirty-seven.””

Richard froze.

“What's on it?””

“Your first transfer.””

His face hardened.

“That's impossible.””

“Three hundred thousand dollars.””

Richard's jaw tightened.

“To an account in Delaware.””

Marcus looked down at the ledger.

Page thirty-seven.

He turned it.

There it was.

A handwritten account number.

Richard's name.

The transfer date.

And a second name.

*Daniel Mercer.*

Daniel looked at Richard.

“You said that account was gone.””

Richard's face twisted.

“You're not supposed to remember.””

Olivia smiled faintly.

“I remember.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“You helped him.””

Daniel lowered his head.

“I did.””

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid.””

Marcus's voice hardened.

“Of Richard?””

Daniel nodded.

“He threatened my family.””

Richard snapped:

“Shut up.””

Daniel finally looked at him.

“You've been telling me to shut up for twelve years.””

He stepped away from Richard.

“I'm done.””

Richard raised the weapon.

Marcus moved instantly.

“Don't!””

Elena rushed toward Olivia.

The detective drew his gun.

“Richard! Drop the weapon!””

Richard backed toward the chapel doors.

“You don't understand.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“I understand enough.””

Richard laughed.

“You think this ledger saves you?””

“No.””

Marcus looked at Olivia.

“She does.””

Richard's face twisted.

“She can't activate anything without testimony.””

Olivia shook her head.

“You're wrong.””

Richard stared.

“About what?””

“The trust was amended.””

Silence.

Marcus looked at her.

“When?””

“Three years ago.””

Richard's expression changed.

“That's not possible.””

“My grandfather changed the condition.””

“Your grandfather was dead.””

“Before he died.””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

Olivia continued.

“He added a second condition.””

Richard's weapon lowered slightly.

“What condition?””

Olivia looked directly at him.

“If the primary witness is threatened, the trust activates automatically.””

Richard went completely still.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“Is that true?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Richard backed away.

“No.””

Daniel continued.

“The moment Richard threatened Olivia tonight, control transferred.””

Richard's face drained of color.

“Transferred to who?””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“To both children.””

Marcus stared.

“Liam and Olivia.””

Richard's eyes widened.

“You're lying.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I'm not.””

The detective stepped closer.

“Put the weapon down.””

Richard looked around the chapel.

The exits were blocked.

The ledger was out of reach.

His plan had collapsed.

Then he smiled.

Marcus recognized that smile.

Desperation.

Richard turned toward Vanessa.

She stood outside the chapel with two officers.

Marcus hadn't noticed her arrive.

Richard stared at her.

“You.””

Vanessa's face was pale.

“You promised you wouldn't hurt them.””

Richard laughed.

“You betrayed me.””

“I tried to protect them.””

“You gave Elena money.””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Richard pointed at her.

“You gave her thirty thousand dollars.””

“It wasn't yours.””

“You used Marcus's account.””

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

“When I had Olivia somewhere safe.””

Marcus felt something inside him loosen.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But understanding.

Richard laughed again.

“You think she's innocent?””

Marcus turned toward him.

“What did she do?””

“She knew.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa lowered her head.

“I knew Richard was stealing.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because he had proof that could destroy you.””

“What proof?””

“Your father's death.””

Marcus froze.

Richard's expression changed.

Vanessa continued.

“He told me he could make it look like you were involved.””

Marcus stared.

“I never knew.””

“I know.””

Vanessa looked toward Liam.

“I was trying to keep him safe.””

Marcus remembered every time Liam had been left behind.

Every expensive purchase.

Every excuse.

Every time Vanessa had told him the boy was difficult.

He looked at her.

“You still hurt him.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I know.””

Liam appeared at the chapel entrance.

Marcus's heart tightened.

He hadn't known the boy had followed them.

“Liam?””

The boy stepped inside.

“I wanted to see Olivia.””

Olivia looked at him.

For a moment neither moved.

Then Olivia whispered:

“Hi.””

Liam gave a nervous smile.

“Hi.””

“You're my brother.””

Liam nodded.

“I know.””

Olivia smiled.

“I've seen pictures.””

“Really?””

“Yes.””

“Do I look different?””

She laughed softly.

“A little.””

Liam glanced at Marcus.

“Dad says I'm still growing.””

Olivia's eyes filled.

“He called you Dad?””

Liam nodded.

Marcus looked away for a moment.

The moment was almost painfully ordinary.

Two children meeting after years of lies.

No money.

No trust.

No hospital.

Just brother and sister.

Richard ruined it.

“This is ridiculous.””

The detective stepped toward him.

“Drop the weapon.””

Richard suddenly raised it.

A shot cracked through the chapel.

Everyone screamed.

The detective fired.

Richard stumbled.

The weapon fell.

He collapsed against the stone wall.

The officers rushed forward.

Marcus didn't look at him.

He ran to Olivia.

“Are you hurt?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

He cut the restraints from her wrists.

She immediately grabbed him.

Marcus held his daughter for the first time.

He didn't know what to say.

So he said the only thing that mattered.

“I didn't abandon you.””

Olivia cried against his shoulder.

“I know.””

“I never knew.””

“I know.””

“I would've come.””

“I know.””

Elena stood a few feet away, crying.

Liam watched them.

Then he walked over.

Olivia released Marcus.

She looked at Liam.

“Can I hug you?””

Liam nodded.

They embraced.

Marcus turned toward Elena.

She didn't move.

He walked to her.

“You should've told me.””

“I know.””

“You should've trusted me.””

“I was afraid.””

“So was I.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

Marcus looked at the woman he had spent years mourning.

“I don't know what happens now.””

Elena wiped her tears.

“Neither do I.””

He nodded.

“Then we'll figure it out.””

Behind them, the detective picked up the ledger.

“Mr. Hale.””

Marcus turned.

The detective looked at the final page.

“You need to see this.””

Marcus walked over.

“What?””

The detective pointed to a handwritten line beneath the trust conditions.

Marcus read it.

Then stopped.

His father's handwriting.

*There is one final beneficiary.*

Marcus frowned.

“Who?””

The detective turned the page.

At the very bottom was a name.

Not Olivia.

Not Liam.

Not Elena.

Not Marcus.

Marcus stared at it.

*Vanessa Hale.*

He looked at Vanessa.

She looked just as shocked.

“What?””

Marcus read the note beneath her name.

*She receives nothing unless she tells Marcus the truth about the night I died.*

Vanessa's face crumpled.

Marcus felt the air leave his lungs.

“The night my father died.””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“I was there.””

Marcus stared.

“What happened?””

She looked toward the officers.

Then at Richard, who was being handcuffed.

Finally, she looked at Marcus.

“Your father wasn't killed by Richard.””

Marcus went still.

“Then who?””

Vanessa's voice shook.

“He asked me to help him.””

“Help him with what?””

“The ledger.””

Marcus waited.

“He knew someone was coming for it.””

“Who?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Your father told me that if anything happened to him, I had to take the ledger and hide it.””

“You had it?””

“Yes.””

“Then how did Richard get it?””

“He didn't.””

Marcus frowned.

Vanessa pointed toward Olivia.

“Olivia's mother had it.””

Elena shook her head.

“No.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You were there.””

Elena's eyes widened.

Then memory seemed to return.

“The hospital.””

Vanessa nodded.

“The night Marcus's father died, Elena took the ledger.””

Marcus stared at both women.

“Why?””

Elena whispered:

“Because your father told me Richard was not the biggest threat.””

Marcus's blood ran cold.

“Then who was?””

Elena looked at the ledger.

“There was another person funding everything.””

“Who?””

She shook her head.

“I never knew the full name.””

Marcus looked at the final page.

Beneath Vanessa's name was another line.

A name his father had written years ago.

Marcus read it once.

Then again.

His face went pale.

Because he knew that name.

Everyone in the family knew it.

It belonged to the man who had stood beside him at every funeral.

The man who had helped him raise Liam.

The man Marcus had trusted without question.

His own older brother.

*Michael Hale.*

Marcus looked toward the chapel doors.

Liam's uncle.

The person who had been receiving the hospital payments.

The person who had known about the trust.

The person who had signed the original property documents.

The person who had told Marcus, years earlier, that Elena was dead.

Marcus whispered:

“Michael.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Elena nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at the detective.

“Where is he?””

The detective checked his radio.

A voice came through.

“Sir, we have a problem.””

“What?””

“Michael Hale just left the hospital.””

Marcus's phone vibrated.

One new message.

No unknown number this time.

The name on the screen was one Marcus had saved since childhood.

*Michael.*

The message contained only six words.

*You finally found the right ledger.*

May you like

Then another message arrived.

*Now come find your mother.*
