Chapter 9: The Father Who Came Back From the Grave

For seven years, I visited my father’s grave.

Every birthday.

Every anniversary.

Every moment when I needed advice from the man I thought was gone.

I talked to a stone.

I cried in front of a name.

I mourned someone who had been alive the entire time.

That realization broke something inside me.

I arrived at the old Carter hospital before sunrise.

The building had been abandoned for years.

Broken windows.

Cracked walls.

A place forgotten by everyone.

Except the people who had secrets buried there.

Michael walked beside me.

“You shouldn’t trust Vanessa.””

I looked at him.

“I don’t.””

“Then why are we following her?””

“Because she has my daughter.””

Michael nodded.

For once, there was no argument.

Inside the hospital, everything smelled like dust and decay.

The maternity wing was at the end of the hallway.

The same place where Emily gave birth.

The same place where my life was changed forever.

We entered the old records room.

And someone was waiting.

A man.

Standing near the window.

Older.

Thinner.

But unmistakable.

My father.

I couldn’t move.

He turned.

“Daniel.””

I stared at him.

The anger came before the shock.

“You’re alive.””

He looked down.

“Yes.””

I walked toward him.

“You let me bury you.””

“I had no choice.””

“No choice?””

My voice echoed.

“You let me believe my father was dead.””

He looked ashamed.

“I was protecting you.””

I laughed.

“Everyone says that.””

I stepped closer.

“You all say you were protecting me while destroying my life.””

His face fell.

“I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes?””

I pointed around.

“Emily was locked away. My daughter was stolen. Vanessa almost became my wife.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I know.””

I froze.

“You know?””

He looked away.

“I knew what Vanessa was capable of.””

My anger exploded.

“Then why didn’t you stop her?””

Silence.

Then my father said:

“Because Vanessa wasn’t the one in control.””

The room went cold.

“Who was?””

He looked at Michael.

Then at me.

“Me.””

Nobody spoke.

The confession was worse than anything.

My father continued.

“I created the situation.””

Emily stared.

“Why?””

He looked at her.

“Because I was trying to protect my legacy.””

My fists tightened.

“Legacy?””

He nodded.

“The Carter company. The money. The family name.””

I shook my head.

“You destroyed your family for a name.””

He didn’t deny it.

Then a sound came from the hallway.

A child crying.

My entire body reacted.

I ran.

The door at the end of the corridor opened.

And there she was.

A little girl.

Standing beside Vanessa.

My daughter.

The missing piece of my life.

She looked at me with frightened eyes.

Then whispered:

“Daddy?””

I stopped breathing.

Vanessa smiled.

“Finally.””

I stepped forward.

“Let her go.””

She held the girl’s hand tighter.

The child looked terrified.

Vanessa looked at me.

“You have no idea what you started.””

I stared at my daughter.

Then at Vanessa.

“What do you want?””

Her smile disappeared.

“The truth.””

I laughed.

“The truth?””

“Yes.””

She looked toward my father.

“He lied to all of us.””

My father went pale.

Vanessa continued:

“He wasn’t protecting his family.””

She looked at me.

“He was protecting the person who could destroy it.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

Vanessa smiled.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Your mother.””

I froze.

“My mother is dead.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No, Daniel.””

May you like

She looked toward the hallway.

“She’s standing right behind you.””
