Chapter 11: The Secret Buried Under My Name
The documents arrived twenty minutes later.
Twenty minutes that felt like years.
I sat in the abandoned hospital office surrounded by people who had lied to me my entire life.
My father.
My mother.
Michael.
Vanessa.
Even Emily.
Not because she wanted to hurt me.
But because everyone had decided I couldn’t handle the truth.
They were all wrong.
I could handle the truth.
What I couldn’t handle was another lie.
The detective placed a folder in front of me.
“This is everything we found.””
I opened it.
The first page was an old medical report.
My name.
My birth date.
And another woman’s name.
Margaret Hayes.
I looked up.
“Who is she?””
My father didn’t answer.
My mother did.
“Your father’s first wife.””
The room went silent.
I stared.
“My father was married before you?””
My mother nodded.
“Before me.””
I looked at my father.
“How many lives did you have?””
He looked ashamed.
“Too many.””
I continued reading.
The report showed that Margaret had a child.
A son.
I looked at Michael.
His face had changed.
“No.””
The detective looked at him.
“Yes.””
Michael stepped back.
“That’s impossible.””
The detective placed another document down.
“DNA records.””
Michael stared.
The color drained from his face.
I looked between them.
“What does this mean?””
My father answered quietly.
“Michael is not my son.””
Nobody spoke.
The truth hung there.
Heavy.
Unbelievable.
Michael laughed once.
A broken sound.
“So all these years…”
He looked at my father.
“You knew?””
My father nodded.
“I found out after your mother died.””
Michael’s face twisted.
“And you still raised me?””
“I tried to do the right thing.””
Michael looked at me.
A strange sadness appeared in his eyes.
“Neither of us were what we thought we were.””
I didn’t know what to say.
Because somehow, the person who betrayed me was also another victim.
The detective pointed to the documents.
“But there’s more.””
I looked down.
A financial record.
Payments.
Names.
Dates.
And one name appeared repeatedly.
Vanessa.
I looked at her.
She didn’t look surprised.
“You knew.””
She smiled.
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Because your father hired me years ago.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“I wasn’t a random person who entered your life.””
Emily whispered:
“You planned this.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I was sent to watch the Carter family.””
I felt sick.
“All those years…”
“Were an assignment.””
The word hurt more than I expected.
Because I remembered the moments that felt real.
The nights she stayed awake with Lily.
The conversations.
The promises.
Were they all fake?
I looked at her.
“Did you ever care about us?””
For a second, Vanessa’s expression changed.
Almost human.
Then it disappeared.
“I don’t know anymore.””
That answer hurt worse than a lie.
The little girl beside her suddenly spoke.
“Is he my daddy?””
Everyone turned.
Her eyes were on me.
I knelt down slowly.
“Yes.””
She looked afraid.
“Are you angry?””
My heart broke.
“No.””
“But everyone keeps fighting because of me.””
I shook my head.
“No, sweetheart.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“At least none of this is your fault.””
The girl looked at me.
Then quietly walked forward.
She didn’t hug me.
Not yet.
She just held my hand.
And somehow that was enough.
Then my mother spoke.
“There is one more thing.””
I looked up.
“What?””
She looked at my father.
“He never told you why he faked his death.””
I stared.
“What do you mean?””
My father closed his eyes.
“I was trying to escape.””
“From who?””
Nobody answered.
Then the lights in the hospital flickered.
Everyone froze.
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Calm.
Someone was approaching.
My father’s face went white.
“No.””
I stood.
“Who is that?””
He whispered:
“The person who controlled everything.””
The door opened.
A woman stepped inside.
Older.
Elegant.
Cold.
I didn’t recognize her.
But everyone else did.
My mother stepped back.
Michael whispered her name.
“Margaret.””
The detective looked confused.
“Who is Margaret?””
My father stared at the woman.
And for the first time in my entire life…

I saw fear in his eyes.
“She’s the reason none of us were ever free.””
