Chapter 5: The Child My Father Hid

I stared at the birth certificate for almost a full minute before I could understand what I was seeing.

The words were there.

Clear.

Impossible.

My hands started shaking.

Because the name written beneath “Father” was mine.

But the name beneath “Mother” was not Emily.

It was someone else.

A woman I had never heard of.

Emily stood beside me.

“Daniel?””

I couldn’t answer.

My mind was trying to reject what my eyes were seeing.

“This isn’t real.””

Lily looked scared.

“I found it under the floorboard.””

I turned toward her.

“The floorboard?””

She nodded.

“I saw a loose piece of wood behind my bed.””

I looked around her room.

A child’s room.

A place that should have been safe.

But even here, my family had hidden secrets.

I knelt beside Lily.

“Sweetheart, why didn’t you tell me?””

She looked down.

“I thought Vanessa would get mad.””

That sentence hurt more than anything else.

My daughter had learned to fear the woman I planned to marry.

And I never noticed.

I hugged her.

“You should always tell me when something scares you.””

She nodded.

“I’m sorry, Daddy.””

“No.””

I held her tighter.

“You did nothing wrong.””

Emily picked up the birth certificate.

Her face had gone pale.

“Daniel…”

I looked at her.

“What?””

She pointed.

“There’s a date.””

I looked.

The date was twenty-eight years ago.

My birth year.

Then I saw the name.

The woman listed as my mother.

“Sarah Whitmore.””

Emily whispered:

“I know that name.””

My heart stopped.

“How?””

She looked toward the hallway.

“Because your father had documents about her.””

The room felt smaller.

“What documents?””

Emily hesitated.

“Daniel, before Vanessa locked me away, I found evidence that your father had another life.””

I laughed quietly.

Another life.

Another family.

Another lie.

“What else don’t I know?””

Emily didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

The next morning, I went to the old Carter family office.

The police had searched the mansion overnight, but I needed to see it myself.

The room smelled exactly the same.

Old leather.

Dust.

Wood polish.

The smell of my childhood.

I walked to my father’s desk.

The desk where he taught me how to write my first signature.

The desk where he told me:

“A Carter protects what belongs to him.””

At the time, I thought he meant family.

Now I wondered if he meant secrets.

Emily stood beside me.

“I’m sorry you have to learn all of this.””

I opened a drawer.

“You keep saying sorry.””

“Because I feel responsible.””

I looked at her.

“You survived.””

She looked away.

“But you suffered.””

Before I could answer, we heard footsteps.

Michael.

He stood in the doorway.

Two officers immediately moved toward him.

“I’m not running.””

I stared at him.

“Why are you here?””

He looked at the desk.

“Because you deserve to know everything before the police find it.””

I laughed.

“You still think you get to decide what I deserve?””

Michael accepted the anger.

Maybe because he knew he earned it.

“I was never your brother.””

The words were strange.

Even though I had heard them before.

He walked closer.

“My name is Michael Whitmore.””

My stomach tightened.

“Whitmore?””

He nodded.

“The same family name as the woman on your birth certificate.””

Emily looked at him.

“You’re Sarah’s son.””

Michael looked at me.

“Yes.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

He continued.

“Your father had an affair with my mother.””

The room spun.

“He abandoned her when she became pregnant.””

I stared.

“You’re saying…”

“I’m your half-brother.””

The silence was unbearable.

I looked at the man I grew up calling my brother.

The man who taught me to ride a bike.

The man who stood beside me at my wedding.

The man who helped destroy my family.

“Why?””

Michael looked broken.

“Because I hated him.””

My jaw tightened.

“So you hurt me?””

“I didn’t plan it that way.””

“Then how did it happen?””

He looked at the floor.

“Vanessa found me.””

Of course.

Vanessa.

“She knew about my mother. She knew I had proof against your father.””

“And she used you.””

Michael nodded.

“She convinced me that destroying your life would expose him.””

I stepped closer.

“You locked Emily away.””

His eyes filled with shame.

“I helped her.””

Emily looked at him.

“Why didn’t you stop her?””

Michael swallowed.

“Because by the time I realized what Vanessa was really doing, it was too late.””

I wanted to hate him.

Part of me did.

But another part of me saw something familiar.

A person destroyed by the same man who destroyed me.

“What happened to Sarah?””

Michael looked away.

“She died.””

The room went silent.

“When?””

“Six months after you were born.””

I felt a strange sadness for a woman I never knew.

A mother who existed only on a piece of paper.

My father stole her story.

He stole Michael’s childhood.

He stole mine.

Then my phone rang.

The detective.

I answered.

“Daniel, we found something.””

“What?””

“A hidden storage room beneath the east wing.””

My blood ran cold.

“The east wing?””

“Yes.””

I looked toward the hallway.

The same place where Emily had been imprisoned.

“What did you find?””

The detective paused.

“Documents.””

“What kind?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Adoption records.””

My heart stopped.

“Whose?””

The detective lowered his voice.

“Your daughter’s.””

I looked at Lily’s photo sitting on the desk.

The world suddenly became silent.

“What are you saying?””

The detective answered:

“Daniel, according to these documents…”

May you like

A pause.

“…Lily may not be your biological daughter.””
