Chapter 8: The Mother I Never Knew

I drove through the night.

No police escort.

No reporters.

No questions.

Just me, Emily, and Michael following the only clue we had.

A woman named Sarah Whitmore.

The woman who was supposed to be dead.

The woman who was apparently raising my missing daughter.

Every mile felt like another betrayal.

My father lied about her.

Michael lied about her.

Vanessa lied about everything.

And somehow, after all these years, I was still discovering new pieces of my own life.

Emily sat beside me quietly.

Finally, she spoke.

“Are you angry with me?””

I looked at her.

“No.””

“You should be.””

“Why?””

“Because I didn’t tell you everything.””

I tightened my grip on the steering wheel.

“You were trapped.””

“But I knew something was wrong.””

She looked out the window.

“I knew your father was hiding things.””

I sighed.

“Everyone knew something.””

The bitterness in my voice hurt both of us.

Emily reached for my hand.

“I never stopped loving you.””

I looked at her.

Six years ago, I would have given anything to hear those words.

Now they hurt.

Because love had survived.

But so much else had been destroyed.

“I never stopped loving you either.””

It was the first honest thing I had said in years.

After three hours, we reached a small town outside the city.

Michael pointed toward a farmhouse at the end of a dirt road.

“That’s where she is.””

I stared.

“You’re sure?””

He nodded.

“She changed her name.””

“Why?””

“To hide.””

I got out of the car.

My heart was pounding.

I was about to meet the woman who knew my daughter before I did.

Before I could knock, the door opened.

An older woman stood there.

Gray hair.

Tired eyes.

But the moment she saw me, she started crying.

“Daniel.””

Hearing my name from her mouth felt strange.

“How do you know me?””

She stepped back.

“Because I’ve been waiting for you.””

Michael moved forward.

“Mom.””

Sarah looked at him.

Then back at me.

“You found the truth.””

I stared.

“You’re alive.””

She nodded.

“I never had the chance to tell you.””

“Tell me what?””

Her eyes filled with pain.

“That your father stole my child.””

I froze.

“What?””

Sarah looked at Michael.

“He was afraid the truth would destroy him.””

I stepped inside.

“Where is my daughter?””

Sarah hesitated.

That scared me.

“Where is she?””

“She’s not here.””

The room went silent.

“What do you mean?””

Sarah looked down.

“Vanessa found out I had her.””

My blood ran cold.

“When?””

“Two days ago.””

Michael cursed under his breath.

“What happened?””

Sarah looked at me.

“She took her.””

The world stopped.

“No.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“No, you don’t get to say sorry.””

My voice broke.

“I lost one daughter because people lied to me.””

I pointed toward the door.

“And now you’re telling me I lost another?””

Sarah started crying.

“She was safe with me.””

“Safe?””

I laughed.

“My daughter disappeared.””

Sarah looked at me.

“Because Vanessa threatened to hurt Lily if I didn’t cooperate.””

My anger stopped.

“What?””

“She knew about Lily.””

Emily stepped forward.

“How?””

Sarah looked at her.

“Because Vanessa has been watching your family for years.””

A horrible realization hit me.

The engagement party.

The timing.

The locked door.

Everything.

It wasn’t random.

Vanessa didn’t suddenly become cruel.

She had been planning.

Sarah walked to a drawer and pulled out a small envelope.

“She left this.””

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

My missing daughter.

Standing beside Vanessa.

My blood ran cold.

On the back was a message.

*You wanted the truth, Daniel. Now you can have all of it.*

Emily grabbed my arm.

“Daniel.””

Another line was written underneath.

*Meet me where it started.*

I looked at Michael.

“Where?””

He stared at the photo.

Then his face changed.

“No.””

“What?””

He whispered:

“The old Carter hospital.””

I frowned.

“The hospital where Lily was born?””

Michael nodded.

“The same place where your father changed the records.””

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Vanessa.

Her voice was calm.

Almost gentle.

“Hello, Daniel.””

My entire body went tense.

“Where is my daughter?””

She laughed softly.

“You mean which one?””

I closed my eyes.

“Don’t do this.””

“I spent years trying to become part of your family.””

Her voice sharpened.

“And you never saw what was right in front of you.””

“Where is she?””

A pause.

Then:

“She’s with the person who deserves her.””

My hands shook.

“Who?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Your father.””

I froze.

“That’s impossible.””

“No, Daniel.””

Her voice lowered.

“Because your father never died.””

The call ended.

I looked at everyone.

Nobody spoke.

Because we all understood the same terrifying truth.

May you like

The man who started everything…

was still alive.
