Chapter 6: The Daughter I Refused to Lose
I hung up the phone without saying goodbye.
I couldn’t move.
Couldn’t speak.
Couldn’t breathe.
Because every nightmare I had survived suddenly created a new one.
Emily saw my face.
“What happened?””
I looked at her.
I didn’t want to say the words.
Because saying them would make them real.
“The police found adoption records.””
Her expression changed.
“Daniel…”
“They said Lily may not be my biological daughter.””
The silence that followed was unbearable.
Emily stepped closer.
“That doesn’t change anything.””
I looked at her.
“How can you say that?””
“Because she’s your daughter.””
Her voice was firm.
“She has been your daughter every day of her life.””
I looked toward the stairs.
Toward Lily’s room.
The little girl who called me Daddy.
The little girl who saved her mother.
The little girl who trusted me when nobody else did.
Nothing about blood could erase that.
But I needed answers.
I drove to the police station with Emily beside me.
The entire ride was silent.
Finally, she whispered:
“Daniel.””
I looked out the window.
“Yes?””
“I need to tell you something.””
I turned.
She looked terrified.
“What?””
“The adoption papers…”
She took a breath.
“I knew about them.””
My heart sank.
“You knew?””
“Not everything.””
I stared.
“Then what did you know?””
Emily closed her eyes.
“Your father showed me something before I disappeared.””
My hands tightened around the steering wheel.
“What?””
“A document.””
“What document?””
She swallowed.
“An agreement.””
“Between who?””
She looked at me.
“Your father and Vanessa.””
The answer felt like a punch.
“Why would Vanessa have anything to do with Lily?””
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because Vanessa wasn’t just trying to replace me.””
A cold feeling moved through my body.
“She was trying to replace everyone.””
When we arrived at the station, the detective was waiting.
He placed a folder on the table.
“I need you to prepare yourself.””
I opened it.
Inside were adoption records.
Medical reports.
And a letter.
The handwriting immediately caught my attention.
My father’s.
I read the first line.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, then my mistakes have finally caught up with me.
My hands shook.
The letter continued.
I made many enemies in my life. Some deserved it. Some did not. But the one thing I tried to protect was the Carter bloodline.
I stopped reading.
The detective watched me.
“Keep going.””
I forced myself.
Lily was never supposed to be adopted.
I stared at the page.
What?
The next words blurred.
She was born from a mistake that Vanessa tried to erase.
I looked at Emily.
“What does this mean?””
She looked just as confused.
The detective spoke.
“We believe Vanessa altered records.””
“Why?””
He opened another folder.
Inside were hospital records.
A birth certificate.
And a name.
Lily Carter.
No adoption.
No replacement.
Nothing fake.
I looked up.
“Then why did you say—”
The detective interrupted.
“Because the first documents we found were forged.””
I exhaled.
A wave of relief hit me.
But confusion replaced it.
“Then whose records were those?””
The detective looked at Emily.
Emily went pale.
“No.””
“What?”” I asked.
She stepped back.
“No…”
The detective slowly placed another document on the table.
A birth record.
The mother’s name.
Emily Carter.
The father’s name.
Daniel Carter.
And beneath it…
A second child.
I stared.
“There were twins.””
Nobody spoke.
The detective continued.
“One child was registered. The other was hidden.””
My voice was barely audible.
“Hidden?””
Emily covered her mouth.
“Daniel…”
I looked at her.
“You knew?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“No.””
Then the detective said something that changed everything.
“Vanessa wasn’t trying to take Lily’s place.””
He opened the final file.
“She was trying to find the other child.””
My blood went cold.
“Why?””
The detective looked at me.
“Because the missing child inherited something your father left behind.””
“What?””
“A trust.””
I stared.
“A trust?””
“Worth millions.””
Of course.
Money.
It always came back to money.
My father’s secrets.
Vanessa’s obsession.
Emily’s imprisonment.
All connected.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
There was a picture attached.
A child.
A little girl.
Maybe seven years old.
Standing in front of a window.
On the back of the photo was a handwritten note.
*You found Emily. Now find your other daughter.*
My hands went numb.
Emily looked at the picture.
And immediately started crying.
Because she recognized the child.
“Daniel…”
Her voice broke.
“That’s her.””
I looked at her.
“Who?””
Emily touched the screen with trembling fingers.
“Our daughter.””
The room went silent.
I stared at the photograph.
The little girl had my eyes.
My hair color.
My face.
Then another message appeared.
May you like
This time, only four words.
*Vanessa knows where she is.*
