Chapter 12: The Woman Behind Every Lie

Margaret Hayes walked into the room like she owned it.

Maybe she did.

Because everyone inside that room had been shaped by her decisions.

My father.

My mother.

Michael.

Vanessa.

Even me.

She looked around slowly.

Then smiled.

“Daniel.””

I hated how calmly she said my name.

Like she knew me.

Like she had been watching my entire life.

“Who are you?””

She tilted her head.

“You really don’t know.””

My father stepped forward.

“Leave him alone.””

Margaret laughed.

“You still think you can protect him?””

Her eyes moved to me.

“You were always his favorite.””

I looked at my father.

“What is she talking about?””

Nobody answered.

Margaret walked closer.

“Your father ruined everything because of you.””

The words hit me.

“Because of me?””

“Yes.””

She smiled.

“He chose you.””

I felt confused.

“Why?””

“Because you were the only child he considered legitimate.””

The room went silent.

My father looked away.

I felt sick.

“All of this…”

I looked around.

“All of this happened because of some family obsession?””

Margaret smiled.

“Not just family.””

She tapped the documents.

“Power.””

She looked at my daughter.

“Money.””

Then at me.

“Control.””

I stepped forward.

“You took my daughter.””

Margaret smiled.

“No.””

She looked at Vanessa.

“Vanessa did.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“You told me she would be safe.””

Margaret turned.

“And she was.””

Vanessa looked furious.

“You promised me everything.””

Margaret laughed.

“You were always too emotional.””

That was the first time I saw Vanessa break.

Not fear.

Betrayal.

“You used me.””

Margaret shrugged.

“Everyone uses everyone.””

Emily stepped forward.

“You’re the one who ordered me locked away.””

Margaret looked at her.

“Yes.””

The casual answer was horrifying.

“Why?””

“Because you found the records.””

Emily’s face went pale.

“The hospital records.””

“Yes.””

Margaret looked at me.

“She discovered the truth about your birth.””

My mind raced.

“What truth?””

Margaret smiled.

“That your father was never the only one hiding things.””

She reached into her bag.

Pulled out a folder.

And handed it to me.

I opened it.

Inside were documents.

DNA tests.

Medical records.

And one sentence that changed everything.

*Daniel Carter is not biologically related to the Carter family.*

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

My father closed his eyes.

Emily looked shocked.

Michael stared.

“No.””

Margaret smiled.

“Now you understand.””

I looked at my father.

“What does this mean?””

He couldn’t answer.

Margaret did.

“It means the Carter empire was never yours.””

My hands shook.

“Why?””

“Because your father stole it.””

The room became chaos.

Everyone started talking.

But I only heard one thing.

Stole.

My father looked broken.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

He looked down.

“I don’t know.””

I laughed.

A painful laugh.

“Of course.””

Margaret stepped closer.

“Your father built his entire life on lies.””

She looked around.

“And every person here paid the price.””

I stared at her.

“Why are you telling me this?””

Her smile disappeared.

“Because I need something.””

“What?””

She looked toward my daughter.

“My daughter.””

The room froze.

Everyone looked at Vanessa.

Margaret continued:

“She is the true heir.””

I stared.

“Your daughter?””

She nodded.

“The child your father took from me.””

My mind struggled to understand.

“No.””

Margaret looked at my father.

“Tell him.””

He was silent.

“Tell him the truth.””

My father finally whispered:

“She’s right.””

My heart dropped.

“What?””

He looked at the little girl holding my hand.

“Her mother is Margaret.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

The little girl looked terrified.

Emily grabbed my arm.

“Daniel.””

I shook my head.

Too many truths.

Too many betrayals.

Too many people claiming ownership over children.

Then the little girl spoke.

“I don’t want to go with her.””

Everyone stopped.

She looked at Margaret.

“I don’t know you.””

Margaret’s expression changed.

For the first time, she looked angry.

“You don’t understand.””

The child held my hand tighter.

“I know my daddy.””

The words broke something inside me.

Because for the first time, she chose me.

Not because of blood.

Not because of documents.

Because of trust.

Margaret stared at me.

“This isn’t over.””

I looked at her.

“Yes, it is.””

She smiled.

“No, Daniel.””

She turned toward the door.

“Because you still don’t know the biggest secret.””

I felt exhausted.

“What now?””

She stopped.

Then looked back.

“Ask your father why he really chose you.””

The door closed.

Silence returned.

I turned toward my father.

“What does she mean?””

He didn’t answer.

And that terrified me.

Because after everything…

May you like

I knew there was still one final truth.

The one he had been willing to let the world burn to hide.
