Chapter 13: The Truth My Father Took to His Grave

I thought there was nothing left that could surprise me.

I was wrong.

After everything I had learned, after every secret that had been dragged into the light, I believed I had reached the bottom.

I believed there was no deeper layer.

No darker truth.

But my father’s silence told me otherwise.

The hospital room was empty now.

Margaret was gone.

Vanessa was gone.

Only the people who had survived the storm remained.

My father sat in a chair near the window.

For the first time in my life, he looked old.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just tired.

I stood in front of him.

“Tell me.””

He looked up.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

But firm.

“I have spent my entire life believing stories you created.””

I pointed toward the documents on the table.

“I believed my mother died.””

“She didn’t.””

“I believed Michael was my brother.””

“He wasn’t.””

“I believed Vanessa loved us.””

“She didn’t.””

My hands shook.

“I believed I was a Carter.””

My father looked away.

“So tell me the truth.””

The room stayed silent.

Finally, he spoke.

“You were never supposed to be part of this family.””

The words hurt more than I expected.

I stared.

“What?””

My father took a breath.

“Your mother and I found you when you were a baby.””

My heart stopped.

“Found me?””

He nodded.

“You were abandoned.””

Emily stepped closer.

I barely noticed.

My entire world had narrowed to one conversation.

“Where?””

“Outside the old Carter estate.””

I laughed softly.

A broken sound.

“So everything was fake?””

“No.””

My father looked at me.

“That’s the one thing you need to understand.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Everything I did was wrong. But my love for you was real.””

I wanted to reject those words.

I wanted to tell him they meant nothing.

But a part of me remembered childhood mornings.

The way he taught me to ride a bike.

The way he stayed beside my bed when I was sick.

The way he smiled when I graduated.

Love could exist beside terrible choices.

That was the cruelest part.

“Why did you choose me?””

He looked at the floor.

“Because you were innocent.””

I frowned.

“That makes no sense.””

“It does.””

He continued.

“When I found you, I was already trapped.””

“By Margaret?””

He nodded.

“Margaret was my first wife. She came from a powerful family. A family that controlled everything.””

He looked at the documents.

“She wanted an heir who carried her blood.””

“And you refused.””

“I did.””

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“Because I realized my entire life had become about power.””

I almost laughed.

“You realized that after building an empire?””

“Yes.””

His answer surprised me.

“I tried to leave.””

I remembered the recording.

The fake death.

The disappearance.

“You faked your death.””

“Yes.””

“To escape her.””

“Yes.””

“But you came back.””

His face darkened.

“Because of you.””

I froze.

“Me?””

“When I left, Margaret threatened to destroy everyone around me.””

He looked toward Lily.

“Your children.””

I swallowed.

“She knew about Lily?””

“She knew everything.””

My father continued.

“She knew Emily discovered the truth. She knew Vanessa was becoming unstable.””

“Then why didn’t you stop them?””

His eyes closed.

“Because I thought I could control the situation.””

I felt anger rising again.

“You thought?””

He nodded.

“That was my greatest mistake.””

Emily spoke quietly.

“What happened the night I disappeared?””

My father looked at her.

“Vanessa contacted Margaret.””

Emily’s face changed.

“They worked together?””

“At first.””

My father looked ashamed.

“Margaret wanted the documents destroyed. Vanessa wanted Daniel.””

My stomach tightened.

“She wanted me.””

“Yes.””

“She planned everything.””

“Yes.””

I looked at Vanessa’s empty chair.

The woman who almost became my wife.

The woman who raised Lily.

The woman who stole years from Emily.

Everything she did had been connected to someone else’s game.

Then my father said something that changed everything.

“But Vanessa didn’t take your daughter.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“The missing child.””

My father pointed toward the documents.

“Margaret did.””

I looked at the little girl standing beside Emily.

The daughter I had only just found.

“Why?””

“Because Margaret believed she was the true heir.””

I shook my head.

“She kidnapped a child for money.””

“Yes.””

The room became silent.

Then Lily entered.

She had been listening.

I immediately turned.

“Lily.””

She looked at me.

“Is everything fixed now?””

The question broke my heart.

Because children always wanted simple answers.

Yes or no.

Safe or unsafe.

Good or bad.

But life wasn’t like that.

I knelt.

“We’re trying.””

She looked at her sister.

Then back at me.

“Are you still my dad?””

I didn’t hesitate.

“Yes.””

“Even if she’s your real daughter?””

I looked at both girls.

“My heart doesn’t work that way.””

Lily smiled through tears.

Then she hugged me.

And a moment later, her sister joined.

Two daughters.

Two lives.

Both stolen from me.

Both finally back.

For the first time in years, I felt like something inside me was healing.

Then my father’s phone rang.

Everyone froze.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“Who is it?””

He didn’t answer.

He just handed me the phone.

A message.

From Margaret.

*You found the truth about Daniel’s past. Now find out why he was chosen.*

Below it was a picture.

An old photograph.

Of me as a baby.

Held by a woman I had never seen.

May you like

On the back were four words.

*Your real mother lives.*
