Chapter 9: The Person Who Came For My Daughter
I don’t remember the drive to the school.
I remember red lights.
I remember my hands shaking on the steering wheel.
I remember one thought repeating over and over.
Please let me get there in time.
When I arrived, I ran inside.
The receptionist looked relieved.
“Mr. Carter.””
“Where is my daughter?””
“Principal’s office.””
I rushed down the hallway.
Through the glass window, I saw Nia sitting inside.
And standing across from her was Vanessa.
My entire body went cold.
I pushed open the door.
“What are you doing here?””
Everyone turned.
Vanessa looked surprised.
Then she recovered.
“Michael.””
I walked straight to Nia.
“Are you okay?””
She nodded quickly.
“I told her I was waiting for you.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“You came here to take my daughter?””
Her face hardened.
“I came here because someone needs to protect her.””
I couldn’t believe it.
“You?””
“Yes.””
I laughed.
A short, angry laugh.
“After everything?””
The principal stepped forward.
“Mr. Carter, we were told Ms. Reed had legal authorization.””
“She doesn’t.””
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“She does.””
She pulled out papers.
My heart dropped.
The documents.
The ones Rachel found.
Vanessa placed them on the desk.
“I am listed as an emergency guardian.””
The principal looked between us.
“I need to verify this.””
“You do not,” I said.
Vanessa smiled slightly.
There it was.
The confidence.
The belief that she had already won.
“You should have listened to me, Michael.””
I stared at her.
“You planned this.””
“No.””
She lowered her voice.
“You just refused to accept reality.””
“What reality?””
“That you can’t give Nia everything she needs.””
Nia looked down.
I felt anger rising.
But I controlled it.
Because I knew what Vanessa wanted.
She wanted me to explode.
She wanted proof that I was unstable.
So I stayed calm.
“You’re leaving.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Not without Nia.””
The principal looked uncomfortable.
“Mr. Carter, until we verify—”
“She’s my daughter.””
“And I have paperwork.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Who told you to come here?””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“Mark?””
Her silence confirmed it.
The principal noticed.
“Who is Mark?””
I didn’t respond.
Because I was watching Vanessa.
She was nervous.
For the first time, truly nervous.
Then the office door opened.
Rachel walked in.
“I think I can answer that.””
Everyone turned.
Vanessa’s face changed.
“What are you doing here?””
Rachel held a folder.
“Saving your plan from becoming reality.””
Vanessa stepped back.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.””
Rachel smiled.
“Actually, I do.””
She placed documents on the desk.
“The emergency guardian agreement you’re presenting was modified after Mr. Carter signed.””
The principal looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
“It means the document is fraudulent.””
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“That’s a lie.””
Rachel pulled out another page.
“Not according to the metadata.””
Silence.
“The original document was changed six days after signing.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“You altered it.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
But her voice was weaker.
Rachel continued.
“And the person who accessed the file was not Mr. Carter.””
The principal looked at the paper.
“Who accessed it?””
Rachel looked directly at Vanessa.
“Someone using her account.””
Vanessa stepped backward.
“No.””
Then her phone rang.
Everyone heard it.
She looked down.
The screen lit up.
A message.
From Mark.
I couldn’t see the entire text.
But I saw enough.
*She knows. Leave now.*
Vanessa looked up.
And for the first time, she looked afraid.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Afraid.
Rachel noticed too.
“Where is Mark?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
The principal picked up the phone.
“We may need to involve law enforcement.””
Vanessa looked at me.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Michael, please.””
I stared at the woman who had once promised to love my family.
“Why?””
She broke.
“I never meant for it to hurt her.””
I looked at Nia.
My daughter.
The child she had tried to erase.
“Then why did you keep going?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Then her phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time, she looked terrified.
I saw her read it.
And I knew something had changed.
Because whatever Mark had written wasn’t a warning.
It was a confession.
Vanessa slowly lowered the phone.
Then whispered:
“Michael…”
Her voice shook.
“You need to find Mark before he disappears.””
“Why?””
May you like
She looked at me.
“Because he knows what really happened to Emily.””
