Chapter 13: The Name Hidden In The Letter
I read the sentence again.
Then again.
My eyes moved over the same words, but my brain refused to accept them.
Someone in your own family helped him.
The storage room suddenly felt smaller.
The walls seemed closer.
Rachel looked at me.
“Michael?””
I didn’t answer.
Because my mind was already searching through every person I trusted.
Every person who had been close enough to know my life.
My finances.
My family.
My weaknesses.
My hands tightened around the letter.
“Emily knew.””
Rachel nodded slowly.
“She knew someone close to you was involved.””
Nia stood beside me, holding my arm.
“Dad…”
I looked at her.
She looked scared.
Not because of the mystery.
Because she could feel my fear.
I immediately softened.
“It’s okay.””
But the words felt empty.
Because I didn’t know if they were true.
I folded the letter carefully.
“We need to read everything.””
Rachel opened the box.
Inside were dozens of pages.
Emily’s notes.
Copies of emails.
Financial records.
Photos.
A small digital recorder.
And one envelope marked:
*For Michael only.*
I opened it.
Michael,
I know you will want answers immediately. I know you will want to confront people.
Please don’t.
My heart tightened.
Even after death, Emily knew me.
The person who betrayed us is dangerous because they know exactly how to make you angry.
I looked at Rachel.
“She knew.””
“Yes.””
I continued.
I spent years believing trust was something people earned slowly.
Then I learned something painful.
Sometimes the people closest to you are the ones who know exactly where to hurt you.
I swallowed.
The next paragraph made my hands shake.
I discovered that Mark was not the only person accessing our information.
Someone else gave him details.
Someone who knew our family.
I stopped.
Rachel leaned closer.
I did.
I followed the trail.
It led back to someone I never expected.
The page ended.
No name.
Just a note.
*The answer is in the recording.*
I picked up the recorder.
My fingers hesitated.
Then I pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then Emily’s voice.
A voice I hadn’t heard in years except in memories.
“Michael?””
I froze.
Nia covered her mouth.
Because hearing her mother’s voice made the past suddenly feel alive.
Emily continued.
“If you’re hearing this, then something happened.””
Her voice was weak.
She sounded tired.
But determined.
“I don’t know how much time I have.””
My eyes burned.
“Emily…”
I whispered her name.
The recording continued.
“I need you to know that I tried to protect you.””
A pause.
“But I made one mistake.””
The static grew louder.
“I trusted someone because I thought family meant loyalty.””
I looked at Rachel.
The same thought crossed both our minds.
Family.
Emily continued.
“The person helping Mark had access to everything.””
“Bank information.””
“Medical records.””
“Private conversations.””
My heart pounded.
Then she said:
“And that person was…”
The recording cut out.
I hit the button.
Nothing.
“No.””
I pressed it again.
Still nothing.
Rachel checked the device.
“The battery died.””
I stared at it.
“Of course.””
Someone had waited years.
Someone had hidden the truth.
And now the final answer was trapped inside a dead recorder.
“We need to recover it,” Rachel said.
I nodded.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone froze.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A voice spoke.
Older.
Calm.
“You found the box.””
My blood went cold.
“Who is this?””
“You know who.””
I looked around.
Rachel mouthed:
“Speaker.””
I turned it on.
The voice continued.
“You were never supposed to find Emily’s evidence.””
“Victor?””
A quiet laugh.
“So Vanessa did finally tell you.””
Nia moved closer to me.
I stepped away.
“You threatened my daughter.””
“No.””
The voice became colder.
“I warned you.””
“You watched my child sleep.””
“That wasn’t me.””
I believed him.
And somehow that scared me more.
“Then who was it?””
Silence.
Then:
“You really don’t know.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
The man sighed.
“Michael, you have spent years looking outside your own house.””
I felt a chill.
“What are you talking about?””
“You think the enemy is Vanessa. Then you think it’s Mark.””
A pause.
“But you never asked why they were able to get so close.””
I looked at Nia.
My daughter.
My family.
My home.
The voice continued.
“Ask yourself who introduced Vanessa to you.””
My heart stopped.
Because I knew.
Someone had.
Someone I had trusted.
Someone who had always been there.
The call ended.
Rachel looked at me.
“Who introduced you?””
I didn’t answer.
Because suddenly, I remembered.
The dinner.
The introduction.
The person sitting between us.
The person who told me:
“You two would be perfect together.””
I whispered the name.
May you like
And Rachel’s face changed.
“Your brother?””
