Chapter 12: The Stranger Behind The Plan
The police arrived within twenty minutes.
But the damage was already done.
Someone had been near my house.
Someone had watched my daughter sleep.
And whoever it was wanted me to know.
They wanted fear.
They wanted me desperate.
The officer examined the photo carefully.
“Do you recognize this person?””
“No.””
“Any idea who sent it?””
I looked at Vanessa.
She hesitated.
Then said:
“No.””
The officer noticed.
“You’re not sure?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I don’t know everyone involved.””
That answer bothered me.
Everyone involved.
Not everything involved.
Everyone.
After the police left, I sat at the kitchen table.
Rachel was reviewing the evidence.
Vanessa sat across from me.
For once, she looked small.
Not powerful.
Not in control.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
She looked up.
“I told you everything.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You told me enough to make yourself look less guilty.””
Her eyes filled.
“I’m trying to help.””
“You still haven’t answered one question.””
“What?””
“Who is the person behind Mark?””
Vanessa went silent.
That silence was an answer.
I leaned forward.
“You know.””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
Rachel stopped reading.
“Who?””
Vanessa whispered:
“His name is Victor.””
I frowned.
“Who is Victor?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“The person who started everything.””
I waited.
She continued.
“Mark was never the leader.””
The room became quiet.
“Then who was?””
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
“Victor owned the company where Mark and I first met.””
“What company?””
“A financial consulting firm.””
Rachel looked up.
“Wasn’t that company investigated years ago?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Fraud.””
I felt numb.
“How does he connect to Emily?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Emily found out Victor was using Mark to target wealthy clients.””
I stared.
“Clients?””
“Yes.””
“And I was one of them?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Your family had assets. Investments. Insurance.””
My hands tightened.
“He targeted me because of money.””
“Yes.””
“And Emily found out.””
“Yes.””
Rachel looked through the documents.
“Why would he wait five years?””
Vanessa answered quietly:
“Because Emily’s evidence disappeared.””
I looked at her.
“But not all of it.””
“No.””
“Where is it?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“I think Nia has it.””
I froze.
“What?””
Vanessa looked toward the stairs.
“Emily trusted her.””
“That’s impossible.””
“She was twelve.””
“Five years ago, she was seven.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Exactly.””
I shook my head.
“She couldn’t understand.””
“No.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“But she could remember.””
My heart started beating faster.
“What are you saying?””
“Emily gave something to Nia.””
I thought about the envelope.
The letter.
The things she kept.
I ran upstairs.
“Nia?””
She looked up from her room.
“Dad?””
I sat beside her.
“Did Mom ever give you anything else?””
She looked confused.
“Like what?””
“Anything she told you to keep safe.””
Nia thought.
Then slowly opened her closet.
She pulled out a small wooden box.
My breath caught.
“I forgot about this.””
“What is it?””
“Mom’s.””
She placed it on the bed.
Inside were old photographs.
A bracelet.
A hospital card.
And a small key.
I picked it up.
There was a tiny tag attached.
A number.
Rachel came into the room.
“What is that?””
I showed her.
Her eyes widened.
“That’s a storage locker number.””
My heart raced.
“Where?””
Rachel grabbed her phone.
“I’ll find out.””
Nia looked scared.
“Dad?””
I turned to her.
“Yeah?””
“Is this about Mom?””
I sat beside her.
“Yes.””
“Was she scared?””
The question broke me.
Because Emily had been scared.
But she had also been brave.
“She was protecting you.””
Nia hugged me.
And for the first time in days, I let myself cry.
A few hours later, we stood outside the storage facility.
The key worked.
Inside the locker was a box.
A single box.
Rachel opened it.
Inside were documents.
Recordings.
Photos.
And one envelope.
Addressed to me.
I opened it.
Emily’s handwriting.
Again.
Michael,
If you found this, then I was right.
They came back.
My heart stopped.
I read faster.
I need you to know something important.
Vanessa was never the biggest danger.
I looked at Rachel.
She leaned closer.
The next sentence made my blood freeze.
The person you should fear is someone you trust more than anyone.
I turned the page.
And at the bottom was one name.
A name that made everything collapse.
*Mark.*
But beneath it was another sentence.
One that changed everything.
May you like
Michael, Mark didn’t act alone.
Someone in your own family helped him.
