Chapter 3: The Woman I Thought I Knew
I spent the next hour staring at that photograph.
One picture.
One handwritten sentence.
That was all it took to make ten years of memories feel uncertain.
I called the number written beneath the message.
The phone rang once.
Twice.
Then a man answered.
“Michael?””
I froze.
“How do you know my name?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because I’ve been waiting for you to find out.””
The voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Who are you?””
“You already know.””
“Daniel?””
Silence.
“Yes.””
I gripped the phone tighter.
“What is this?””
“You need to hear the truth before Vanessa controls the story.””
I looked toward the living room.
Nia was sitting on the couch, watching television quietly.
She had no idea that the woman who had promised to become her stepmother might have been lying to both of us.
“Why should I believe you?””
“Because I’m not the one who lied about where I was.””
That sentence hit hard.
“What do you want?””
“I don’t want anything.””
“Everyone wants something.””
Daniel sighed.
“I wanted Vanessa to be honest.””
I closed my eyes.
“Tell me.””
There was a long pause.
Then he said:
“Vanessa didn’t accidentally hurt your daughter.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
“She knew Nia would come to the wedding.””
I stood up.
“How?””
“She asked me to find information about your family.””
The room suddenly felt colder.
“What?””
“She wanted to know everything about you before she married you.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It will.””
I wanted to hang up.
I wanted to believe there was another explanation.
But a part of me already knew.
The signs had been there.
The little comments.
The moments when Vanessa became annoyed whenever Nia needed attention.
The way she always talked about our “future family” without mentioning my daughter.
I had ignored them.
Because I wanted the dream to be real.
“Why would she do that?”” I asked.
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“Because she never saw Nia as part of the family she wanted.””
My hand curled into a fist.
“Where is Vanessa now?””
“She’s probably trying to fix the damage.””
“What damage?””
Another pause.
Then Daniel said:
“The damage to her plan.””
I felt a chill.
“What plan?””
Before he could answer, someone knocked on my front door.
I looked up.
Nobody was supposed to be there.
Nia looked at me.
“Dad?””
The knock came again.
Three slow hits.
I walked toward the door.
“Daniel, stay on the phone.””
“I’m here.””
I reached for the handle.
When I opened the door, I expected to see Vanessa.
Instead, I saw a woman I had never met.
She looked nervous.
She held a folder against her chest.
“Are you Michael Carter?””
“Yes.””
Her eyes moved past me.
Toward Nia.
Then back to me.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
“I know this is a terrible time.””
“Who are you?””
She took a deep breath.
“My name is Rebecca.””
She handed me the folder.
“I used to work with Vanessa.””
I didn’t move.
“What is this?””
Her fingers trembled.
“Proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Rebecca looked directly into my eyes.
“Proof that your wedding wasn’t the first time Vanessa tried to get rid of someone.””
I slowly opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Messages.
Photos.
And one name appeared over and over again.
My daughter’s.
I looked up.
Rebecca’s voice was barely a whisper.
“Michael… Vanessa didn’t just want Nia out of your wedding.””
May you like
She paused.
“She wanted Nia out of your life.””
