Chapter 11: The Night Everything Changed
I drove home in silence.
No one spoke.
Not Rachel.
Not Vanessa.
Not even Nia.
The quiet was unbearable.
Because sometimes silence says more than words.
When we arrived, I sent Nia upstairs with Rachel.
I needed answers.
Real answers.
Vanessa stood in my living room.
The same room where she once helped me choose furniture.
The same room where she promised she would become part of our family.
Now she looked like a stranger.
“Start talking.””
She nodded.
“I met Mark before you.””
“I know.””
“But you don’t know why.””
I crossed my arms.
“Then tell me.””
She took a deep breath.
“Mark recruited me.””
“For what?””
“To get close to you.””
My chest tightened.
The confession hurt more than I expected.
“Why?””
“Because of your finances.””
I stared at her.
“You were sent to use me.””
“Yes.””
The word hung in the air.
I looked away.
“Why should I believe anything else you say?””
“Because I’m done lying.””
I almost laughed.
“You said that before.””
“I know.””
She sat down.
“I met Emily first.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Before I met you.””
“When?””
“Three months before.””
My mind raced.
Emily had never mentioned Vanessa.
“Where?””
“At the hospital.””
I stared.
“Why were you there?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Because Mark asked me to watch her.””
My stomach turned.
“You were spying on my wife?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“To find out what she knew.””
The anger was overwhelming.
I wanted to yell.
I wanted answers.
I wanted the last five years back.
Instead, I asked:
“What did Emily know?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“She knew Mark was stealing.””
“Only that?””
“No.””
A pause.
“She knew about me.””
I felt cold.
“What about you?””
“She found records connecting me to Mark.””
“And?””
“She confronted me.””
“When?””
“The week before she died.””
I stopped.
“What did she say?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“She told me she knew exactly what I was doing.””
My voice lowered.
“What did you do?””
“I denied it.””
“Then?””
“She told me something I never forgot.””
“What?””
Vanessa looked toward the stairs.
“She said, ‘I don’t care what you do to me. But if you ever hurt my daughter, I will make sure the truth survives.’”
My throat tightened.
That sounded like Emily.
Strong.
Protective.
A mother until the very end.
“What happened after?””
Vanessa’s hands shook.
“Emily created copies of everything.””
“Where?””
“I don’t know.””
“Then why does Mark think you know?””
“Because he thinks I helped her.””
“Did you?””
Vanessa looked away.
That was the answer.
“You did.””
A tear fell.
“Yes.””
I was shocked.
“Why?””
“Because Emily was right.””
I stared at her.
“She was the first person who made me see what Mark really was.””
A bitter smile crossed her face.
“I spent years thinking I deserved more. I thought I was helping myself.””
She looked at me.
“But Emily showed me I was becoming someone terrible.””
I didn’t forgive her.
I couldn’t.
But for the first time, I saw something besides manipulation.
Regret.
“What happened the night Emily died?””
Vanessa went silent.
Then:
“She called me.””
“When?””
“The night she was hospitalized.””
My heart stopped.
“She called you?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was scared.””
“Of what?””
“Of Mark.””
I stared.
“Tell me what she said.””
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“She told me she had proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“Everything.””
“And?””
“She said she was going to send it to you.””
I felt dizzy.
“Did she?””
“No.””
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Because Mark got there first.””
My body went still.
“What?””
“He went to the hospital.””
“When?””
“Before you arrived.””
I remembered that night.
I remembered leaving the room for coffee.
I remembered Mark telling me to rest.
I remembered him saying Emily was sleeping.
I felt sick.
“He was there.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
“And then Emily died.””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
The room felt like it was closing around me.
“Are you saying Mark caused her death?””
Vanessa shook her head quickly.
“No.””
“Then what?””
“He scared her.””
“How?””
“He threatened to expose things.””
“Things?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“The truth about your accounts.””
“And Emily?””
“She panicked.””
I whispered:
“She was already sick.””
“Yes.””
My eyes burned.
“And nobody told me.””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Because there was no answer.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
One sentence.
*Stop digging, or Nia will lose the only parent she has left.*
I showed Vanessa.
Her face went pale.
“That’s Mark.””
Rachel walked downstairs.
“What happened?””
I handed her the phone.
She read it.
Then immediately called someone.
“What are you doing?””
“Reporting a threat.””
Before she could finish, another message arrived.
This time, there was a photo.
My heart stopped.
It was Nia.
Sleeping.
Taken through her bedroom window.
I looked upstairs.
My daughter was inside.
Someone had been watching my house.
Vanessa whispered:
“Michael…”
I looked at her.
“What?””
She pointed at the photo.
“That’s not Mark.””
I froze.
“What?””
She stared at the image.
“I know his methods.””
May you like
Her voice shook.
“This is someone else.””
