Chapter 14: The Last Betrayal

My brother’s name felt impossible to say.

Ethan.

My younger brother.

The person who stood beside me when our parents died.

The person who helped me raise Nia after Emily passed away.

The person who hugged me at Emily’s funeral and told me:

“I’ll always protect this family.””

Those words now felt like a knife.

Rachel watched me carefully.

“Michael, are you sure?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

The truth was worse.

I wasn’t sure.

Because I didn’t want to be.

I wanted it to be anyone else.

Anyone.

But not Ethan.

“He introduced Vanessa.””

Rachel nodded.

“Tell me everything.””

I sat down.

My memories came back.

Three years after Emily died, Ethan invited me to dinner.

He said I needed to start living again.

He said I was too focused on grief.

That I deserved happiness.

That night, Vanessa showed up.

She acted surprised.

Like it was a coincidence.

I remembered thinking it was fate.

Now I wondered if it was planned.

I drove straight to Ethan’s house.

I didn’t tell Rachel.

I didn’t tell anyone.

I needed to see his face.

When he opened the door, he smiled.

“Michael?””

Then he saw my expression.

The smile disappeared.

“What happened?””

I stepped inside.

“Did you know Vanessa before you introduced us?””

Silence.

A long silence.

Too long.

Ethan looked away.

My chest tightened.

“Answer me.””

He closed the door.

“Michael…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“Not another lie.””

He sat down.

“I never wanted this.””

My heart dropped.

“You knew.””

“I knew some things.””

“Some?””

I laughed.

“You knew enough to bring her into my life.””

Ethan rubbed his face.

“Mark came to me.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He told me about Vanessa.””

“Why would Mark tell you?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

That was when I understood.

“Because you were involved.””

He looked up.

“I didn’t plan for Emily to die.””

The room went silent.

I couldn’t move.

“What did you say?””

Ethan immediately looked horrified.

“I didn’t mean—”

“You said Emily.””

I stepped closer.

“What do you know about Emily?””

He looked broken.

“I made mistakes.””

“No.””

My voice became quiet.

“You made choices.””

Tears filled his eyes.

“I was desperate.””

“For money?””

He looked down.

“Yes.””

The word destroyed something inside me.

“My own brother.””

“I was drowning.””

“So you sold us?””

“No.””

“Yes.””

I pointed toward the door.

“You gave them access.””

Ethan shook his head.

“I gave Mark information.””

“What information?””

“Financial details.””

My stomach turned.

“Why?””

“He promised me a percentage.””

I closed my eyes.

The betrayal hurt differently.

Because Ethan wasn’t a stranger.

He was family.

“Did you know about the custody plan?””

“No.””

“Did you know about Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

“Did you know she hated Nia?””

His face changed.

That answer was enough.

“You knew.””

“I thought she would change.””

I stared at him.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

A tear rolled down his face.

“I was wrong.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were selfish.””

He nodded.

“I was.””

For the first time, he wasn’t defending himself.

And somehow that made it worse.

“Where is Mark?””

Ethan looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

“Where is Victor?””

His face changed.

Fear.

“Michael…”

“Tell me.””

“I haven’t spoken to him in years.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

Ethan stood.

“You don’t understand what Victor is.””

“I understand enough.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“You don’t.””

He walked toward the window.

“Victor destroys people who betray him.””

I stared.

“Are you warning me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I already lost everything.””

A sound came from outside.

A car.

We both turned.

A black SUV stopped in front of the house.

Ethan went pale.

“No.””

“What?””

“He found me.””

The front door handle moved.

Someone was trying to open it.

I stepped back.

“Who?””

Ethan whispered:

“Victor.””

The door opened.

A man entered.

Older.

Calm.

Expensive suit.

No fear.

No hesitation.

He looked directly at me.

“Michael Carter.””

I stared.

“Victor.””

He smiled.

“I was wondering when you would finally figure it out.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“Leave him alone.””

Victor looked at him.

“You always did have a conscience at the worst possible time.””

I felt anger rising.

“You used my family.””

Victor looked at me.

“No.””

He smiled.

“Your family used themselves.””

The words burned.

“You ruined lives.””

Victor shrugged.

“I created opportunities.””

“You stole from my wife.””

“She got too curious.””

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?””

Victor’s expression changed slightly.

Then he smiled.

“Ask yourself why Emily trusted Mark.””

I froze.

“What?””

Victor stepped closer.

“Because Mark was there when she needed help.””

The room became silent.

“He wasn’t just your attorney.””

My heart started racing.

“He was her doctor’s contact.””

I stared.

“What?””

Victor smiled.

“He knew her medical situation better than anyone.””

I felt sick.

“You’re lying.””

“Am I?””

Victor pulled out a folder.

And placed it on the table.

Inside was a document.

A medical authorization form.

With Mark’s signature.

Victor looked at me.

“You’ve been blaming the wrong person.””

I picked up the paper.

And then I saw it.

The date.

The signature.

The truth.

Mark wasn’t just covering up financial crimes.

He had been involved from the beginning.

Victor leaned closer.

“Now you understand.””

I looked up.

“Why?””

His smile disappeared.

“Because Emily discovered something Mark was desperate to hide.””

“What?””

Victor opened the door.

“Your wife didn’t die because of her illness.””

May you like

He paused.

“She died because she found out what Mark did.””
