Chapter 10: The Truth Emily Left Behind

I couldn’t breathe.

For five years, I had accepted one painful truth.

Emily was gone.

A terrible illness had taken her from us, leaving behind memories, photographs, and a daughter who still sometimes walked toward the door expecting her mother to come home.

I had spent years learning how to live with that loss.

But now Vanessa was standing in front of me, telling me there was something else.

Something about Emily.

Something Mark knew.

I stared at Vanessa.

“What does Mark know?””

She looked around the office.

Everyone was watching.

The principal.

Rachel.

Nia.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“Not here.””

I stepped closer.

“You don’t get to decide when I hear the truth anymore.””

Her eyes moved toward my daughter.

For once, she looked ashamed.

“Michael…”

“No.””

My voice was calm.

But inside, everything was breaking.

“You used my daughter. You lied to me. You tried to take her away from me.””

I pointed toward the door.

“And now you’re going to tell me what happened to Emily.””

Vanessa looked down.

Then she whispered:

“Mark knew Emily was investigating me before she died.””

The room went silent.

Rachel immediately looked at me.

“Investigating?””

I nodded slowly.

“Emily’s letter mentioned records.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“She found something.””

“What?””

“She found out Mark and I had known each other before you met me.””

The words hit me.

“Before?””

“Yes.””

I stared at her.

“How long?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Years.””

My anger returned.

“You told me you met Mark through me.””

“I lied.””

The honesty almost surprised me.

“Why?””

“Because Emily started asking questions.””

Rachel crossed her arms.

“What kind of questions?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“About our past.””

I looked at her.

“Our past?””

She nodded.

“Before Michael, Mark and I worked together.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did you do?””

Vanessa’s face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“I wasn’t trying to hurt Emily.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She closed her eyes.

“She found financial records.””

“What records?””

“Records showing that someone had been moving money from a family account.””

I froze.

“My family account?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Rachel spoke quietly.

“Michael…”

I looked at her.

“What?””

“Your wife’s medical bills.””

The room became painfully quiet.

Emily had been sick for months.

I remembered every hospital visit.

Every late night.

Every bill I didn’t understand.

I had trusted Mark to help organize everything.

Because he was my attorney.

Because he was my friend.

I felt sick.

“Are you saying Mark stole from us?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Yes.””

Nia was still in the room.

I immediately lowered my voice.

“How much?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Enough that Emily knew something was wrong.””

I walked away.

I couldn’t stand still.

Every memory of those years came back.

Mark sitting beside me at the hospital.

Mark telling me not to worry about paperwork.

Mark saying:

“Focus on Emily. I’ll handle everything else.””

My hands curled into fists.

“He betrayed us.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

Rachel looked at Vanessa carefully.

“And you?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was involved.””

My heart stopped.

I looked at her.

“You were involved?””

“I didn’t understand what he was doing at first.””

“But you helped him.””

“Yes.””

The word was barely audible.

Nia gasped softly.

I looked at my daughter.

She looked hurt.

Not angry.

Just hurt.

Because she was realizing the person she once trusted had never truly been safe.

I walked over and held her hand.

Then I turned back.

“Why tell me now?””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“Because Mark was supposed to make everything disappear.””

“What does that mean?””

“He knew Emily had evidence.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“Where is it?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“You expect us to believe that?””

“I’m telling the truth.””

For once, I believed she was scared.

But I didn’t trust her.

Not anymore.

“Where is Mark?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“I don’t know.””

Then her phone rang.

Everyone froze.

She looked at the screen.

Her face drained of color.

“What?””

I watched her answer.

“Hello?””

Silence.

Then:

“Mark?””

She stood completely still.

The call was on speaker accidentally.

A man’s voice came through.

“You should have stayed quiet.””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“You told me this was handled.””

“It was supposed to be.””

“Mark, Michael knows.””

A pause.

Then Mark laughed.

A cold, emotionless laugh.

“Then he knows enough to be dangerous.””

My blood ran cold.

Rachel reached for the phone.

“Mark Wilson, where are you?””

Silence.

Then:

“Rachel. Still playing hero?””

Rachel’s expression changed.

“You framed him.””

“I protected myself.””

“You stole from a grieving family.””

“I took opportunities.””

Nia moved closer to me.

I wrapped my arm around her.

Mark continued.

“You both should understand something.””

His voice became colder.

“Emily wasn’t supposed to find anything.””

My entire body froze.

“What did you say?””

A pause.

Then Mark spoke.

“She wasn’t supposed to find the account.””

I felt the world shift.

“What happened to my wife?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Mark said:

“Ask Vanessa.””

The call ended.

I turned slowly.

Vanessa was crying.

And I knew.

There was something she still hadn’t told me.

Something bigger than money.

Something bigger than lies.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at me.

“What happened to Emily?””

Her lips trembled.

Then she whispered:

“The night she died…”

May you like

A tear fell down her face.

“She wasn’t alone.””
