Chapter 9: The Truth About the Missing Daughter
Thomas Whitmore looked as though he wanted to swallow his own words.
Evelyn's hand remained locked around his arm.
"Get on the plane," she whispered.
Thomas pulled away.
"Don't tell me what to do.""
Benjamin stood between them and the aircraft.
"You're not going anywhere until we finish this conversation.""
Thomas laughed nervously.
"You can't stop us.""
Benjamin turned toward the security officers.
"Please ask the airport authorities to secure the relevant records. Our legal team has already contacted the appropriate investigators.""
One officer nodded.
"Understood, sir.""
Evelyn stepped forward.
"Benjamin, you're making a terrible mistake.""
He looked at her.
"Which mistake?""
"Turning a family disagreement into a public spectacle.""
"A family disagreement?""
Benjamin pointed toward the aircraft.
"You were leaving the country after money disappeared from my company. Your brother has admitted that you planned to keep my daughter from receiving her inheritance. And now you want to call this a disagreement?""
Evelyn's eyes flashed.
"Everything I did was to protect what we built together.""
Benjamin shook his head.
"What we built together?""
"Yes!""
"You mean the company I founded before I met you?""
Evelyn's face reddened.
"I stood beside you for twenty-two years!""
"And I trusted you.""
"That should count for something!""
"It did. Until you used it to hurt my daughter.""
Thomas suddenly interrupted.
"Can we stop pretending Naomi is some innocent victim?""
Benjamin turned toward him.
Thomas continued.
"She always had everything. The house, the cars, the attention. Elizabeth's money.
Your protection. What about Evelyn?""
Benjamin stared.
"What about her?""
"She was supposed to have a future too.""
Evelyn looked at her brother.
"Thomas, stop.""
But Thomas had become angry.
He pointed toward Benjamin.
"Do you know how many times Evelyn complained that everything in this family belonged to Naomi? Every property, every trust, every decision. You made sure your daughter was protected while Evelyn had to ask you for permission to spend money.""
Benjamin's expression remained cold.
"She had access to more money than most people could imagine.""
"That isn't the point.""
"Then explain the point.""
Thomas laughed bitterly.
"She wanted security. She wanted something that was hers.""
Benjamin looked at Evelyn.
"Is that true?""
Evelyn's eyes filled.
"You never understood.""
"Then help me understand.""
She removed her sunglasses.
For the first time, she looked less like a wealthy hotel regular and more like someone whose carefully constructed world was collapsing.
"I was always second," she whispered.
Benjamin frowned.
"What?""
"First, it was Elizabeth. Then Naomi. Even after Elizabeth died, everything was still about her.""
Benjamin shook his head.
"Elizabeth was your husband's first wife. Naomi was a child who lost her mother.""
"And I was expected to raise her as if I didn't have feelings?""
"You chose to marry me.""
"Because I loved you!""
Benjamin looked at her.
"Then why did you make my daughter feel unwanted?""
Evelyn didn't answer.
Thomas looked toward the aircraft.
"We need to go.""
Benjamin turned to him.
"No.""
Thomas's voice became aggressive.
"You don't own the airport.""
"No. But I own the company whose money you used to finance your businesses.""
Thomas stepped forward.
"And you have no proof I stole anything.""
Daniel appeared beside Benjamin.
"Actually, Mr. Whitmore, we have quite a bit.""
He opened a tablet.
"We have bank transfers, electronic approvals, consulting invoices, and recorded conversations involving both you and Mrs. Carter.""
Thomas stared.
Daniel continued.
"We also have evidence that the electronic signature used to approve several transactions originated from a device registered to your company.""
Thomas's face tightened.
"That's impossible.""
"Then you should have no difficulty explaining it.""
Evelyn turned toward Benjamin.
"You're letting him destroy everything.""
Benjamin's voice softened slightly.
"No, Evelyn. You did that yourself.""
Two hours later, Benjamin returned to the St. Charles Royale.
Evelyn and Thomas had been separated for questioning by the authorities.
No dramatic arrest had taken place.
No one had been dragged away in handcuffs.
But the financial investigation was now official, and both their travel plans had been interrupted.
Harold Pierce had agreed to cooperate and provide original records.
Marcus Bell had been suspended.
And the hotel had begun a full internal review.
Benjamin entered the private lounge.
Naomi was sitting near the window with Grace asleep in her arms.
She looked up immediately.
"What happened?""
Benjamin sat beside her.
"We found them.""
"Did they explain?""
"Some of it.""
Naomi looked at her father.
"Was Evelyn really planning to leave?""
"Yes.""
Naomi lowered her eyes.
"I thought she loved me.""
Benjamin didn't know what to say.
Naomi continued.
"When I was little, she used to brush my hair before school. She would make pancakes on Saturdays. Sometimes she would sit with me while I did my homework.""
She smiled faintly.
"I remember thinking I was lucky to have two mothers.""
Benjamin took her hand.
"She should have been better to you.""
Naomi nodded.
"I know.""
She looked at Grace.
"I don't want my daughter growing up wondering whether she's loved.""
Benjamin gently touched the baby's tiny hand.
"She won't.""
Naomi looked toward the hotel lobby.
"Did they find the money?""
"Some of it. The rest will take time.""
"And my mother's inheritance?""
"We'll recover what belongs to you.""
Naomi hesitated.
"All of it?""
"Every dollar we can legally establish was taken from the estate.""
She was quiet for a moment.
Then she asked something Benjamin hadn't expected.
"What about the money that was already spent?""
Benjamin looked at her.
"We'll pursue every available legal remedy.""
Naomi shook her head.
"I don't want to spend the rest of my life chasing money.""
"I understand.""
"I just want my mother's things.""
Benjamin frowned.
"Which things?""
"Her letters. Her photographs. Anything she left behind.""
Benjamin looked at Daniel.
"Can we locate her personal estate inventory?""
Daniel nodded.
"I'll ask Margaret.""
Naomi's eyes filled again.
"I want Grace to know who her grandmother was.""
Benjamin leaned forward.
"She will.""
That afternoon, Margaret returned with a small cardboard box.
It was old, slightly faded, and secured with a piece of blue ribbon.
Naomi stared at it.
"What's that?""
Margaret smiled.
"Something I should have given you years ago.""
She placed it on the table.
"Your mother asked me to keep it safe.""
Naomi carefully untied the ribbon.
Inside were several photographs, handwritten letters, and a small velvet pouch.
She picked up the first photograph.
Elizabeth stood in a garden wearing a white dress.
Her dark hair was blowing across her face.
She was laughing.
Naomi stared at it.
"I've never seen this one.""
"There are more," Margaret said.
Naomi picked up another photograph.
It showed Benjamin holding a baby Naomi in the hospital.
His hair was darker, and he looked exhausted.
But he was smiling.
Naomi laughed through her tears.
"Daddy, look at your hair.""
Benjamin smiled faintly.
"I was younger.""
"You looked like you hadn't slept in a month.""
"I probably hadn't.""
Margaret watched them quietly.
Then Naomi opened the velvet pouch.
Inside was a small gold necklace.
A delicate heart-shaped pendant hung from the chain.
Naomi touched it.
"Was this hers?""
Margaret nodded.
"Your mother wore it every day.""
Naomi opened the pendant.
Inside was a tiny photograph.
One side showed Elizabeth.
The other showed a baby Naomi.
Naomi pressed the necklace against her chest.
Then she noticed a folded note beneath the velvet lining.
She carefully removed it.
The paper was yellowed with age.
Her mother's handwriting appeared across the top.
*For Naomi, when she is old enough to understand.*
Naomi unfolded it.
My darling girl,
There may come a day when people try to make you feel that you don't belong somewhere.
They may judge your clothes, your choices, your mistakes, or the family you come from.
Never let them convince you that your worth depends on their approval.
You belong wherever you are treated with kindness.
And if you ever become a mother, teach your child the same thing.
Naomi began crying.
Benjamin moved closer.
She handed him the letter.
He read it silently.
Then he lowered his head.
"I should have protected this," he whispered.
Naomi touched his hand.
"We can't change everything.""
"No. But we can make sure Grace grows up knowing the truth.""
Later that evening, Daniel entered the lounge.
He looked serious.
"Mr. Carter, we received the first report from the digital investigators.""
Benjamin stood.
"What did they find?""
Daniel handed him a tablet.
"The forged email sent in Naomi's name was created from a hotel workstation. We also identified the person who accessed the account.""
Benjamin read the report.
"Marcus?""
Daniel shook his head.
"No. The workstation was accessed using a temporary administrator credential.""
"Who had it?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Evelyn.""
Benjamin frowned.
"She had hotel administrator access?""
"Through her role on the hospitality advisory board. She was granted temporary access during a system upgrade last year.""
Naomi looked up.
"Why would she have access to the hotel systems?""
Benjamin didn't answer.
Daniel continued.
"There's another discovery. The original reservation for Naomi was modified twice before she arrived.""
Benjamin studied the records.
"Who changed it?""
"The first modification came from Evelyn's account. The second came from a separate executive account.""
"Whose?""
Daniel turned the tablet around.
A name appeared.
*RICHARD WHITMORE.*
Victoria's husband.
Naomi frowned.
"The woman who slapped me?""
"Victoria's husband?"" Benjamin asked.
Daniel nodded.
"Yes. Richard Whitmore accessed the hotel system three days before Naomi's arrival.""
Benjamin looked at the details.
The reservation had originally included a private family suite.
Richard's account had added an instruction:
*Guest may present herself as a member of the Carter family. Confirm with Mrs. Carter before granting access.*
Naomi looked confused.
"Why would Victoria's husband be involved?""
Daniel opened another report.
"Because Whitmore Development has been receiving financing through the same network of companies connected to the missing funds.""
Benjamin's expression darkened.
"How much?""
"Approximately eleven million dollars.""
Naomi slowly shook her head.
"So Victoria knew?""
"We haven't established what she knew," Daniel replied.
"But her husband appears to have been involved in the financial arrangement.""
Benjamin stared at the report.
Then his phone rang.
It was an unfamiliar number.
He answered.
"Benjamin Carter.""
A man's voice responded.
"Mr. Carter, my name is Richard Whitmore.""
Benjamin looked at Daniel.
"What do you want?""
Richard sounded unusually calm.
"I understand you've been asking questions about my wife.""
"I'm asking questions about several people.""
"Then perhaps we should talk.""
"About what?""
"About your daughter.""
Benjamin's expression changed.
Richard continued.
"There's something Naomi hasn't told you.""
Benjamin looked toward his daughter.
"What?""
Richard lowered his voice.
"Before you make any decisions about your wife, you should ask Naomi why she was really invited to the St. Charles Royale.""
Benjamin frowned.
"I invited her.""
"No, Mr. Carter. You didn't.""
A long silence followed.
Richard continued.
"The reservation was created by someone else. Someone who knew exactly what would happen when Naomi arrived.""
Benjamin felt a chill move through him.
"Who?""
Richard's answer was almost a whisper.
"Your daughter was never supposed to leave that hotel with you.""
Benjamin looked at Naomi.
Then he heard the sound of a door opening behind Richard.
A woman spoke.
"Richard, don't tell him that.""
Benjamin recognized the voice immediately.
Evelyn.
But she wasn't supposed to be anywhere near her husband.
And the next words Richard spoke changed everything.
"Because, Benjamin, the person who arranged this entire situation wasn't Evelyn.""
May you like
He paused.
"It was someone inside your own company.""
