Chapter 6: The Witness Who Knew Everything

Margaret Ellis arrived at the St. Charles Royale forty minutes later.

She was seventy-one years old, with short silver hair, a navy walking coat, and a leather document case that looked as though it had been carried through decades of important meetings.

She walked slowly but confidently.

Daniel met her at the entrance to the conference room.

"Ms. Ellis?""

"Daniel Reeves?""

"Yes, ma'am.""

Margaret shook his hand.

"Where's Benjamin?""

"Inside.""

"And Naomi?""

"She's in the private lounge with the baby.""

Margaret nodded.

"Good. I would like to see her before I leave.""

Daniel opened the conference room door.

"Mr. Carter, Margaret Ellis is here.""

Benjamin stood immediately.

"Margaret.""

She smiled faintly.

"Benjamin. It's been a long time.""

He walked over and shook her hand.

"Thank you for coming.""

"I wouldn't have missed it.""

Her eyes moved toward Evelyn.

The smile disappeared.

"Evelyn.""

Evelyn sat rigidly in her chair.

"Margaret.""

Margaret placed her document case on the table.

"I understand there's been some confusion about Naomi's trust.""

Evelyn gave a dismissive laugh.

"There's no confusion. I've simply been trying to protect the family.""

Margaret removed her glasses.

"From what?""

Evelyn crossed her arms.

"From unnecessary interference.""

Margaret looked at Benjamin.

"Has anyone shown you the original amendment request?""

"Not yet.""

"Then I suggest we start there.""

She opened her case and removed several documents.

The first was a formal request dated five months earlier.

The second was a letter of authorization.

The third was an email chain.

Benjamin examined the first page.

It requested a change to the independent trustee arrangement.

The proposed replacement was a private financial consultant recommended by Evelyn.

Benjamin looked up.

"Why was this submitted?""

Margaret answered calmly.

"Because Evelyn wanted the independent trustee removed.""

Evelyn shook her head.

"I was trying to modernize an outdated arrangement.""

"By replacing an independent trustee with someone who works for your financial adviser?""

Margaret placed another document on the table.

The proposed trustee had a financial relationship with a company controlled by Evelyn's brother.

Daniel leaned forward.

"Do we have the company records?""

Margaret nodded.

"Yes. They're attached.""

Benjamin turned another page.

He found the company's name.

*Whitmore Capital Advisory.*

His eyes narrowed.

"Whitmore?""

Margaret nodded.

"Your wife's brother, Thomas, has a financial interest in the company. It also has a consulting agreement with Richard Whitmore's development business.""

Evelyn stood.

"This is ridiculous.""

Margaret didn't look at her.

"The arrangement would have placed significant influence over Naomi's trust in the hands of people connected to your family.""

Benjamin slowly closed the folder.

"Did you approve this?""

"No.""

"Did you tell Evelyn you wouldn't approve it?""

"Three times.""

Evelyn's voice sharpened.

"Because you refused to listen to reason!""

Margaret finally looked at her.

"I refused because the proposed arrangement violated the trust's independence requirements.""

Evelyn shook her head.

"You've always had a problem with me.""

Margaret's expression remained steady.

"I have a problem with unauthorized attempts to alter a protected trust.""

Benjamin turned toward Evelyn.

"Why did you want control of Naomi's inheritance?""

Evelyn laughed.

"I didn't want control of anything.""

"Then why change the trustee?""

"Because Naomi isn't financially responsible.""

Benjamin stared at her.

"She has never asked me for money.""

"That's because you've always given her everything.""

Naomi's voice came from the doorway.

"That's not true.""

Everyone turned.

She stood there holding Grace, with Emily beside her.

Benjamin immediately walked toward her.

"Sweetheart, you don't have to be here.""

"I know.""

Naomi entered the room.

"I heard my name.""

Evelyn sighed.

"Of course you did.""

Naomi ignored the comment.

She looked at Margaret.

"Hello.""

Margaret's face softened.

"Naomi Carter. I haven't seen you since you were a little girl.""

Naomi gave a faint smile.

"I remember you.""

"Your grandfather used to tell me you were the most stubborn person in the family.""

Benjamin almost smiled.

"He wasn't wrong.""

Margaret chuckled.

Then she turned serious.

"Naomi, I need to explain something about your trust.""

Naomi nodded.

Margaret placed the documents in front of her.

"Your grandfather established the trust because he wanted to protect your future. He knew that family circumstances could change. He wanted to make sure you would always have financial independence.""

Naomi looked at the pages.

"I never knew all this existed.""

"I know. Your father was supposed to explain it when you turned twenty-five, but the original plan was delayed.""

Benjamin lowered his head.

"I should have told her.""

Margaret touched the edge of the document.

"What's important now is that no changes have been approved.""

Naomi looked relieved.

"Then why is everyone arguing?""

Margaret glanced toward Evelyn.

"Because someone has been trying to make those changes without proper authorization.""

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

"You're making me sound like a criminal.""

Margaret's voice remained calm.

"I'm explaining what the documents show.""

Evelyn turned toward Benjamin.

"You're really going to let these people destroy our marriage over a misunderstanding?""

Benjamin looked at her.

"You arranged for my daughter to be denied access to a room she had already been promised.""

"I wanted to speak with her first.""

"Then you fabricated an email in her name?""

Evelyn's face changed.

"I did not fabricate anything.""

Daniel placed the printed email on the table.

"Our technical review indicates that the message was sent from a device associated with the guest relations office.""

Marcus shifted in his chair.

Benjamin turned toward him.

"Mr. Bell?""

Marcus looked terrified.

"I didn't write that email.""

Daniel opened another document.

"The account used to send it was accessed through the hotel's internal network at 8:47 yesterday evening.""

"That doesn't prove I sent it," Marcus said.

"No," Daniel replied.

"But it does show that the session was authenticated using your credentials.""

Marcus stared at the table.

Evelyn immediately intervened.

"He probably left his computer unlocked. This is a hotel. Employees share terminals all the time.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Do you know something about the login?""

"No.""

"Then why are you explaining how it happened?""

Evelyn said nothing.

Benjamin looked toward Naomi.

"Sweetheart, have you ever sent an email to Harold Pierce?""

"No.""

"Have you ever asked anyone to change your trust?""

"Never.""

Margaret nodded.

"That's consistent with what I know.""

Then she removed one final document from her case.

"This is why I insisted on coming personally.""

It was a handwritten letter.

The date was six months earlier.

The signature belonged to Samuel Carter, Benjamin's father.

Benjamin's face changed as he recognized the handwriting.

"Where did you get this?""

"Your father gave it to me before he died. He instructed me to keep it sealed until I believed Naomi's inheritance might be threatened.""

Benjamin slowly unfolded the paper.

His father's words were brief.

Margaret,

If Evelyn ever attempts to influence Naomi's trust, I want you to investigate the reason before approving anything.

I have concerns about the financial arrangements surrounding her brother's businesses.

I do not have proof of wrongdoing, and I will not accuse anyone without evidence.

But I have seen enough to know that Naomi's future must remain protected.

There is one other matter. The original trust contains a second document, stored separately from the standard agreement. It should only be released if someone attempts to interfere with the beneficiary's rights.

Benjamin looked up.

"What's the second document?""

Margaret opened her case again.

"I believe this is what he meant.""

She removed a sealed envelope.

It was marked with Samuel Carter's initials.

Beneath them were four words.

*To Be Opened Only When Necessary.*

Evelyn suddenly stood.

"Absolutely not.""

Benjamin looked at her.

"Sit down.""

"That document is private.""

Margaret raised an eyebrow.

"How would you know what's inside?""

Evelyn hesitated.

"I know Samuel. He wouldn't have wanted this.""

Margaret studied her.

"Interesting.""

Benjamin carefully broke the seal.

Inside was a single sheet of paper and a small flash drive.

He read the letter first.

His expression shifted from confusion to disbelief.

Then he read it again.

"Margaret," he whispered, "is this real?""

She nodded.

"Your father asked me to preserve the original.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"What does it say?""

Benjamin placed the letter on the table.

It contained a declaration from Samuel Carter.

The declaration stated that he had placed an additional portion of his estate into a separate protected fund.

A fund that would remain dormant until Naomi became a mother.

Once Naomi had a child, the fund would become active for the benefit of both Naomi and her descendants.

The value was substantial.

But that wasn't what made Benjamin stare at the page.

The document also named a second beneficiary.

*Grace Carter.*

Naomi looked at her daughter.

"Grace?""

Benjamin nodded slowly.

"Your grandfather included her.""

Naomi's eyes filled.

"He never even met her.""

"Your grandfather knew you would have children one day.""

Margaret gently touched Naomi's arm.

"He wanted to make sure they would be protected too.""

Benjamin turned the page.

There was another clause.

It stated that if anyone attempted to transfer, conceal, or improperly influence the protected fund, the independent trustee was required to suspend all pending distributions and initiate a formal investigation.

Margaret looked at Evelyn.

"That's why I came.""

Evelyn shook her head.

"You're twisting this.""

Margaret placed the flash drive on the table.

"There are records attached to the declaration. Your father-in-law instructed me to preserve them.""

Benjamin looked at the small device.

"What's on it?""

"Financial correspondence. Original transfer instructions. And a recorded conversation.""

Evelyn's face turned pale.

Benjamin stared at her.

"What conversation?""

Margaret looked toward Naomi.

"I don't think this should be played in front of the baby.""

Naomi glanced at Grace.

Emily offered to take the baby back to the lounge.

Naomi reluctantly handed her daughter over, kissed Grace's forehead, and watched Emily carry her out.

Then she returned to the table.

Margaret connected the flash drive to Daniel's laptop.

A folder appeared.

Inside were several audio files.

One was labeled with a date from five months earlier.

Margaret opened it.

A woman's voice filled the conference room.

Evelyn.

She sounded different from the woman who had called Benjamin darling.

Her voice was cold, impatient, and unmistakably angry.

"Once the trust is transferred, Naomi won't have the ability to interfere.""

A man's voice responded.

"What if Benjamin discovers it?""

Evelyn answered without hesitation.

"By then, he'll have no choice. And if he starts asking questions, we'll make sure he understands that his daughter is the reason his family is falling apart.""

Benjamin stopped breathing for a moment.

The recording continued.

Then the man asked another question.

"And what about the baby?""

Evelyn's answer was so quiet that everyone leaned toward the speakers.

"Grace is the reason this has to happen before it's too late.""

Naomi's hands began to tremble.

Benjamin looked at the screen.

"Who is that man?""

Margaret paused the recording.

She opened the file information.

A name appeared.

*THOMAS WHITMORE.*

Evelyn's brother.

But before Benjamin could speak, Daniel noticed something else.

There was another audio file.

It had been created only two weeks earlier.

Its title was simple.

*THE FINAL ARRANGEMENT.*

Benjamin looked at Margaret.

"Play it.""

Margaret hesitated.

Then she pressed the button.

And this time, the first voice wasn't Evelyn's.

It was Harold Pierce, the family attorney.

"Once Benjamin signs the revised estate documents, Naomi will lose control of the trust. But there's one thing we haven't accounted for.""

A second voice answered.

Evelyn.

"What?""

Harold lowered his voice.

"Your husband has started asking questions about Grace's inheritance.""

Evelyn's response came immediately.

"Then we need to make sure he never gets the chance to change anything.""

Benjamin slowly turned toward his wife.

For the first time, Evelyn looked genuinely frightened.

And then the recording revealed the final sentence.

"Because if Benjamin finds out what really happened to Naomi's first inheritance, he'll never forgive either of us.""

Naomi looked at her father.

"My first inheritance?""

Benjamin stared at the laptop.

He had no idea what they were talking about.

But Margaret did.

She quietly closed her eyes.

Then she said something that changed the entire meaning of the documents on the table.

"Benjamin, there's something about your father's estate that I never told you.""

She looked directly at Naomi.

May you like

"Your mother left you something before she died.""

And it had disappeared long before Evelyn Carter ever became part of the family.
