Chapter 8: Sixty Million Dollars and One Betrayal

Benjamin didn't sleep that night.

At 2:17 a.m., he sat alone in the private executive suite of the St. Charles Royale, staring at a wall of financial documents.

The city outside was quiet.

The streets of New Orleans glistened beneath the streetlights after a brief rain.

But inside the hotel, the investigation had barely begun.

Daniel had assembled a team of financial auditors, corporate attorneys, and digital security specialists.

Margaret had provided copies of the original estate documents.

And Marcus Bell had been placed on administrative leave pending a full review of the hotel's conduct.

Benjamin looked at the financial summary.

Sixty-three million dollars.

That was the preliminary amount of suspicious transfers.

The transactions had been divided among several companies.

Some were legitimate investments.

Others appeared to be consulting payments, management fees, and property acquisition expenses.

But a pattern was emerging.

Every suspicious transaction had been approved using credentials linked to Benjamin's executive office.

He rubbed his forehead.

His phone rang.

It was Daniel.

"Sir, we found something.""

Benjamin sat upright.

"What?""

"The financial transfers weren't all made through the same account. Someone created a network of shell companies.""

"Who owns them?""

"Several are registered to people connected to Thomas Whitmore.""

Benjamin looked toward the window.

"And Evelyn?""

"She's listed as an authorized signatory on three.""

Benjamin closed his eyes.

"How long?""

"The earliest transaction we identified is dated six years ago.""

"Six years?""

"Yes, sir.""

Benjamin stared at the papers.

Six years.

That meant the theft had continued through Naomi's marriage, her pregnancy, and the death of her husband.

While Evelyn had attended family dinners and smiled for photographs, money had been quietly disappearing.

"Have you contacted the bank?""

"Our legal team has. They're preserving the records.""

"Good. What about the executive credentials?""

Daniel hesitated.

"There's another issue.""

Benjamin's voice hardened.

"Tell me.""

"Someone created a secondary approval profile using your electronic signature.""

"Who?""

"We haven't identified the person yet. But the profile was created using a device registered to Harold Pierce's office.""

Benjamin stood.

"Get me everything.""

"We're working on it.""

"Daniel, I want the original access logs. Not a summary. Every timestamp, every device, every approval.""

"Understood.""

Benjamin ended the call.

Then he looked through the glass partition.

Naomi was asleep in the adjoining suite.

Grace rested in a small hotel crib.

Naomi had finally managed to eat something and get a few hours of sleep.

He didn't want to wake her.

But he also knew she deserved to understand what was happening.

At 7:30 a.m., Daniel arrived with a new report.

Benjamin was already dressed.

"What's the situation?""

Daniel placed a folder on the desk.

"We've identified the company receiving the largest transfers.""

Benjamin opened it.

The name was unfamiliar.

*Southern Crescent Development Partners.*

"Who owns it?""

"Thomas Whitmore controls sixty percent through two holding companies.""

"And the remaining forty?""

Daniel turned the page.

"An investment trust connected to Evelyn Carter.""

Benjamin stared at the document.

"How much went through this company?""

"Thirty-one million dollars over six years.""

"Where did it go?""

"Some went into commercial property acquisitions. Some was transferred overseas. We're still tracing the rest.""

Benjamin looked up.

"Has Thomas been contacted?""

"Not yet.""

"Good. I want the evidence secured before anyone speaks to him.""

Daniel nodded.

Then he hesitated.

"There's something else.""

Benjamin leaned back.

"Go ahead.""

"Harold Pierce has submitted a formal request to meet with you.""

Benjamin almost laughed.

"After everything we've found?""

"He says he has information about the transactions.""

"Where is he?""

"Waiting downstairs.""

Benjamin considered it.

"Bring him up.""

A few minutes later, Harold entered the suite.

He was sixty-four, with thinning gray hair and a navy suit that looked slightly too large around his shoulders.

He carried a leather briefcase.

"Benjamin.""

"Sit down.""

Harold sat.

For several seconds, neither man spoke.

Then Harold cleared his throat.

"I understand you're upset.""

Benjamin stared at him.

"That's an interesting way to describe sixty million dollars disappearing from my company.""

Harold shifted in his chair.

"I can explain.""

"Then explain.""

Harold opened his briefcase.

He removed a series of printed documents.

"The transactions were part of an investment strategy.""

"Whose strategy?""

"Evelyn's.""

Benjamin leaned forward.

"Did I authorize them?""

Harold looked uncomfortable.

"Some were approved through the executive office.""

"Did I personally approve them?""

"Not every transaction.""

"How many?""

Harold hesitated.

"I don't know.""

Benjamin looked toward Daniel.

Daniel placed another document on the desk.

"We have the electronic approval records. Several transactions were authorized while Mr. Carter was traveling overseas.""

Harold swallowed.

"His office handled many approvals.""

Daniel nodded.

"Yes. But the approvals in question were submitted using a device that was never assigned to his office.""

Harold stared at the paper.

Benjamin's voice became colder.

"Who used it?""

Harold looked down.

"I was told it was necessary.""

"By whom?""

"Evelyn.""

Benjamin stood.

"Did she threaten you?""

"No.""

"Did she pay you?""

Harold said nothing.

Benjamin walked toward the window.

"Harold, I've known you for thirty-one years.""

"I know.""

"I trusted you with my father's estate. My wife's estate. My daughter's future.""

"I never intended for things to go this far.""

Benjamin turned.

"Then why did you do it?""

Harold's shoulders sagged.

"Thomas was having financial difficulties. Evelyn said she needed temporary access to capital. She promised everything would be repaid.""

"How much did you receive?""

Harold looked at the floor.

"Two million.""

Benjamin didn't move.

"Two million dollars?""

"It was a consulting arrangement.""

"You took two million dollars to help steal from my family?""

Harold's voice cracked.

"I was under pressure.""

"From whom?""

Harold finally looked up.

"Thomas Whitmore.""

Benjamin stared.

Harold continued.

"Thomas threatened to expose some of my earlier financial arrangements. He said he would ruin my practice if I didn't cooperate.""

Daniel took notes.

"Do you have evidence?""

Harold nodded.

"I have emails. Recorded calls. Original transfer instructions.""

Benjamin looked at him.

"Why bring them now?""

Harold's eyes moved toward the door.

"Because Evelyn has stopped answering my calls.""

Benjamin frowned.

"Why does that matter?""

Harold took a breath.

"Because she told Thomas that if the investigation reached this point, I would be the person blamed for everything.""

Daniel exchanged a glance with Benjamin.

Harold continued.

"She was planning to leave the country.""

Benjamin's expression changed.

"When?""

"Tonight.""

Benjamin immediately picked up his phone.

"Daniel, contact security. I want to know where Evelyn is.""

Daniel made the call.

A few seconds later, he turned back.

"Sir, her vehicle left the family residence at 6:12 this morning.""

"Where is she?""

"Her driver says she requested a stop at a private airport.""

Benjamin's jaw tightened.

"Which airport?""

"Lakefront.""

Benjamin looked at Harold.

"Who is she meeting?""

Harold hesitated.

"Thomas.""

Daniel immediately contacted the security director.

Benjamin grabbed his coat.

"Let's go.""

But before he reached the door, another voice came from behind him.

"Daddy?""

Naomi stood in the doorway.

She was holding Grace, who was awake and quietly moving her tiny hands.

Benjamin stopped.

"Sweetheart, you should be resting.""

"I heard you talking.""

Naomi looked at Harold.

"Is Evelyn leaving?""

Benjamin nodded.

"Possibly.""

Naomi glanced down at Grace.

"Then she's going to get away with it?""

"No.""

"How can you be sure?""

Benjamin walked toward her.

"Because this time, we're not going to ignore the evidence.""

Naomi looked at him.

"Can I ask you something?""

"Anything.""

"Did you know about the money my mother left me?""

Benjamin shook his head.

"No.""

"Did you know Evelyn was treating me this way?""

He hesitated.

"No. Not all of it.""

Naomi swallowed.

"Why didn't you notice?""

The question hit him harder than any accusation.

Benjamin looked at his daughter.

He wanted to explain.

He wanted to tell her that he had been working, that he had been grieving, that he had believed the wrong person.

But none of those explanations would change what Naomi had experienced.

"I should have," he said quietly.

Naomi looked away.

Benjamin continued.

"I can't change what happened when you were growing up. But I can stop pretending it didn't happen.""

Naomi nodded slowly.

Then she looked at Harold.

"Did you know about the photograph?""

Harold frowned.

"What photograph?""

"The one of my mother that disappeared from my bedroom.""

Harold looked uncomfortable.

"Mrs. Carter asked the housekeeper to remove several personal items from your room.""

Naomi's eyes widened.

"Why?""

Harold didn't answer.

Benjamin stepped closer.

"Harold.""

The lawyer finally spoke.

"Evelyn said she wanted to make the house feel like one family.""

Naomi gave a sad laugh.

"By removing my mother?""

Harold looked down.

"I was told it was a personal matter.""

Naomi turned toward the window.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then she looked at her father.

"I don't want to become like her.""

Benjamin shook his head.

"You won't.""

"I don't want Grace growing up thinking money gives her the right to hurt people.""

Benjamin placed his hand on her shoulder.

"Then we'll make sure she learns something different.""

Naomi nodded.

Daniel's phone rang again.

He answered.

Listened.

Then looked at Benjamin.

"Sir, we've located Evelyn's vehicle.""

"Where?""

"At the Lakefront private terminal.""

Benjamin nodded.

"Let's move.""

The private terminal was nearly empty when Benjamin arrived.

A black SUV stood beside the entrance.

Two security officers approached him.

"Mr. Carter.""

"Where is she?""

"Inside the departure lounge.""

Benjamin walked through the glass doors.

Evelyn was standing near a private aircraft.

She wore sunglasses and carried a small suitcase.

Thomas Whitmore stood beside her.

He was fifty-two, with silver hair, a tailored suit, and the arrogant expression of a man accustomed to making other people solve his problems.

When he saw Benjamin, his face tightened.

"Well, this is unexpected.""

Benjamin stopped several feet away.

"Going somewhere?""

Evelyn removed her sunglasses.

"Benjamin, this isn't the time.""

"You're right. It's long past the time.""

Thomas stepped forward.

"Let's not make a scene.""

Benjamin looked at him.

"Sixty million dollars.""

Thomas frowned.

"What?""

"That's how much disappeared from my company through your businesses.""

Thomas gave a dismissive laugh.

"Those were legitimate investments.""

"Then you'll have no problem explaining them to investigators.""

Evelyn stepped between them.

"Benjamin, please. We can discuss this privately.""

"You've had six years to discuss it.""

Thomas looked toward the aircraft.

"We're leaving.""

Benjamin nodded.

"Not before you answer one question.""

Thomas folded his arms.

"What question?""

Benjamin's voice was icy.

"What happened to the money Elizabeth Carter left her daughter?""

Thomas's expression changed.

For the first time, he seemed genuinely uncomfortable.

He glanced at Evelyn.

And that single glance told Benjamin more than a dozen explanations could have.

Thomas looked back.

"I don't know anything about Elizabeth's estate.""

Benjamin held up the financial records.

"Your company received the transfers.""

"Through legitimate investment channels.""

"Then explain them.""

Thomas's jaw tightened.

"Talk to Harold.""

Benjamin took a step closer.

"Harold has already talked.""

Evelyn's face went white.

Thomas looked at her.

"What did you tell him?""

Evelyn whispered something.

Benjamin didn't hear it.

But then Thomas said a sentence that made every person in the terminal turn toward him.

"You told me Naomi would never find out because she wasn't supposed to inherit anything.""

Benjamin went completely still.

Evelyn grabbed her brother's arm.

"Thomas, shut up!""

But the words had already been spoken.

May you like

And Benjamin knew there was more to the story than the missing money.

Because Thomas had just revealed that he and Evelyn had made a decision about Naomi's future long before Grace was born.
