Thinking

Chapter 9: The Betrayal Came From Inside

Benjamin ended the call without saying goodbye.

For several seconds, he stared at his phone.

Daniel watched him carefully.

"Sir?""

"Find Richard Whitmore.""

"He's at the Lakefront terminal?""

"No. Find his current location. I want to know who is with him.""

Daniel immediately contacted the security team.

Naomi stood near the sofa, holding Grace.

"Daddy, what did he mean?""

Benjamin looked at her.

"He says someone inside my company arranged your arrival.""

Naomi frowned.

"But you invited me.""

"I thought I did.""

He looked toward Daniel.

"Check the original invitation.""

Daniel opened the reservation history.

"Mr. Carter, your executive assistant sent the confirmation.""

Benjamin stared.

"Which assistant?""

"Claire Donovan.""

Benjamin felt his stomach tighten.

Claire had worked for him for eleven years.

She managed his schedule, coordinated private travel, and had access to confidential correspondence.

She had attended Naomi's wedding.

She had sent flowers after Grace was born.

She had even helped Benjamin arrange the hotel reservation.

"Where is Claire now?"" he asked.

Daniel checked his phone.

"Her office is in Baton Rouge.""

"Call her.""

Daniel dialed.

The phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then a recorded message played.

"Hello, you've reached Claire Donovan. Please leave a message.""

Daniel ended the call.

"She's not answering.""

Benjamin looked at him.

"Get someone to her office.""

"Yes, sir.""

Naomi sat down.

"Why would Claire do this?""

Benjamin didn't answer.

He was thinking about the last eleven years.

Claire had been there when he expanded Carter Holdings into new markets.

She had organized meetings, handled private correspondence, and coordinated family events.

She had been one of the few people he trusted completely.

But now the evidence suggested someone inside his company had orchestrated a confrontation involving his daughter.

And the hotel reservation had been part of it.

"Daniel," Benjamin said, "I want Claire's access suspended.""

"Understood.""

"Freeze her corporate credentials, preserve her emails, and notify security that nobody is to remove documents from her office.""

Daniel nodded.

Naomi looked at her father.

"Could she really have wanted something to happen to me?""

Benjamin sat beside her.

"I don't know.""

"Why would someone do that?""

He looked at Grace.

"Sometimes people become so obsessed with what they want that they stop seeing the damage they're causing.""

Naomi looked down.

"I don't want anyone getting hurt because of me.""

Benjamin took her hand.

"You're not responsible for what other people choose to do.""

At 8:45 p.m., Daniel received a call from the security team.

Claire Donovan had left her office approximately thirty minutes earlier.

Her computer had been shut down.

Several filing cabinets were open.

And a storage box containing confidential corporate records was missing.

Benjamin listened without interrupting.

"Do we have footage?""

"Yes, sir. The building security team is reviewing it.""

"Where did she go?""

"Her vehicle was last seen heading toward downtown Baton Rouge.""

Benjamin stood.

"Contact the authorities. Don't approach her without them.""

Daniel nodded.

Then another call came through.

He answered.

Listened.

And slowly looked toward Benjamin.

"What is it?"" Benjamin asked.

Daniel covered the microphone.

"Claire's assistant has come forward.""

"What did she say?""

"She says Claire told her that Naomi's arrival at the hotel was part of a larger plan.""

Benjamin's jaw tightened.

"What plan?""

Daniel listened again.

Then he ended the call.

"Apparently, Claire was instructed to create a situation that would make Naomi appear unstable and financially motivated.""

Naomi looked up.

"Why?""

Daniel glanced at Benjamin.

"The objective was to create evidence suggesting Naomi was attempting to pressure you into changing your estate documents.""

Benjamin stared.

"So someone wanted to make my daughter look like she was exploiting me?""

Daniel nodded.

"Yes, sir.""

Naomi looked confused.

"But I never asked for anything.""

"I know," Benjamin said.

Daniel continued.

"The plan appears to have involved creating a false email, delaying the hotel reservation, and encouraging Victoria Whitmore to confront Naomi.""

Naomi looked at him.

"Encouraging her?""

Daniel nodded.

"Victoria received a message from an anonymous number the morning of your arrival. It suggested that someone might be using the Carter name to gain access to the hotel.""

Benjamin's expression darkened.

"Who sent it?""

"Claire's assistant believes the message came from a phone registered to a company associated with Thomas Whitmore.""

Benjamin turned toward the window.

The pieces were beginning to fit.

Evelyn wanted control of the trust.

Thomas wanted access to the assets.

Harold had helped move the money.

But Claire had arranged the hotel incident.

And Victoria had been the person who made it happen in public.

"What did they intend to do after Naomi was removed?"" Benjamin asked.

Daniel hesitated.

"The plan was to create a formal incident report describing her as aggressive and disruptive.""

"Then?""

"That report would have been circulated to the family lawyers as evidence of instability.""

Naomi's face went pale.

"Would that have affected Grace?""

Benjamin looked at her.

"We don't know yet.""

Daniel answered carefully.

"It could have been used to challenge your ability to manage certain financial arrangements, especially if someone wanted to petition for additional oversight.""

Naomi looked down at her daughter.

"They wanted to make me look like a bad mother?""

Nobody answered.

She swallowed.

"Because I didn't have expensive clothes?""

Benjamin took her hand.

"No. Because they believed humiliating you would make it easier to take what belonged to you.""

Naomi closed her eyes.

For a moment, she couldn't speak.

Then she looked at her father.

"Did you know Claire was doing this?""

Benjamin shook his head.

"No.""

"Did you know Evelyn was doing this?""

"No.""

"Then how did they get so close to you?""

Benjamin looked at her.

He didn't have an answer.

The next morning, the first major break in the investigation arrived.

Claire Donovan's assistant, a young woman named Sophie Miller, agreed to meet Benjamin's legal team.

She was twenty-nine, nervous, and visibly exhausted.

She entered the conference room carrying a laptop and a small envelope.

"Mr. Carter?""

Benjamin stood.

"Thank you for coming.""

Sophie nodded.

"I wasn't sure whether I should.""

"You did the right thing.""

She sat across from Daniel.

"I worked with Claire for four years. She was always professional. But things changed about six months ago.""

Daniel opened his notebook.

"What changed?""

"She started taking private calls. She would ask me to leave the office whenever certain people came in.""

"Who?""

Sophie looked at Benjamin.

"Mrs. Carter. Mr.

Whitmore. And Mr. Pierce.""

Benjamin nodded.

"Go on.""

Sophie opened her laptop.

"Claire also asked me to prepare several documents under different names.""

"What kind of documents?""

"Internal approval forms. Investment summaries. Guest relations reports.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Did you know they were fraudulent?""

"Not at first.""

Sophie opened a folder.

"I started noticing that some of the approval dates didn't match the meeting records.""

She showed them a spreadsheet.

"These are the transfers I questioned.""

Daniel examined it.

The amounts matched several suspicious transactions already identified by the auditors.

Sophie continued.

"Claire told me not to worry. She said everything had been approved by Mr. Carter.""

Benjamin looked at her.

"Did I approve them?""

Sophie shook her head.

"No, sir. I checked your calendar. You were out of the country during several of those approvals.""

Daniel looked up.

"Did Claire know you had noticed?""

Sophie nodded.

"She found my notes.""

"What happened?""

"She told me I was making a serious mistake. She said my career would be over if I repeated what I'd seen.""

Sophie opened the envelope.

Inside was a small USB drive.

"I copied some of the original emails before she deleted them.""

Daniel took it carefully.

"What's on here?""

"Messages between Claire and Thomas Whitmore. And one message from Mrs. Carter.""

Benjamin's expression hardened.

"Show me.""

Sophie opened the first email.

The subject line read:

*NEW ORLEANS ARRIVAL — FINAL INSTRUCTIONS.*

The message was dated three days before Naomi arrived.

It contained a list of instructions.

1. Delay the private suite check-in. 2. Ensure Naomi is approached by Victoria.

3. Have Marcus document any disagreement. 4.

Do not permit access to the family office. 5. If Naomi contacts Benjamin, make sure the incident is described as an attempt to obtain financial privileges.

Benjamin read it twice.

Then he looked at Sophie.

"Who wrote this?""

Sophie scrolled to the bottom.

The sender was Claire Donovan.

But the final line contained a different name.

*Approved: Evelyn Carter.*

Naomi, who had entered quietly during the meeting, stood behind her father.

She read the screen.

Then she whispered:

"She planned it.""

Benjamin turned.

"Sweetheart...""

Naomi shook her head.

"I know.""

She looked at the message again.

"She knew I would be holding Grace.""

Benjamin's jaw tightened.

Sophie continued.

"There's another email.""

She opened it.

This one was sent the night before the incident.

It was addressed to Claire and Thomas.

The message was short.

*If Benjamin arrives, proceed with the secondary arrangement. Do not allow Naomi to speak privately with him.*

Benjamin looked up.

"Secondary arrangement?""

Sophie nodded.

"I don't know what it means.""

Daniel checked the attachments.

There was one.

A scanned legal document.

The heading read:

*EMERGENCY PETITION FOR TEMPORARY FINANCIAL GUARDIANSHIP.*

Benjamin stared.

The document named Naomi Carter as the subject.

It alleged that Naomi had displayed signs of emotional instability following childbirth and might be unable to make responsible decisions concerning her daughter's future.

Naomi's face went white.

"That's not true.""

Benjamin immediately turned toward her.

"I know.""

The petition had not been filed.

But it had been drafted.

And the proposed petitioner was not Evelyn.

It was Richard Whitmore.

Daniel looked at the document.

"There's a problem.""

Benjamin turned.

"What?""

"The supporting declaration is signed by a medical professional.""

Naomi stared.

"Who?""

Daniel read the name.

Then he looked at Benjamin.

"Dr. Samuel Hargrove.""

Benjamin frowned.

"Who is that?""

Naomi's eyes widened.

She recognized the name.

It was the doctor who had examined her after Grace's delivery.

The same doctor who had told her that everything was normal.

The same doctor who had smiled and congratulated her on becoming a mother.

Naomi shook her head.

"No.""

Benjamin looked at her.

"Do you know him?""

"Yes.""

"Are you sure?""

Naomi nodded.

"He was my doctor at the private clinic.""

Daniel examined the document more closely.

"The declaration states that Dr. Hargrove observed concerning behavior during a postpartum examination.""

Naomi's voice trembled.

"I never had that examination with him.""

Benjamin looked at Daniel.

"Verify it.""

Daniel nodded.

Naomi continued.

"I saw a nurse. Dr. Hargrove wasn't even there.""

Benjamin's expression became dangerously calm.

"Then someone forged a medical declaration.""

Daniel looked at the signature.

"Possibly.""

Naomi sat down.

Her daughter had been sleeping in the adjoining room.

She could hear the soft hum of the baby monitor.

For the first time, she understood the scale of what had been planned.

They hadn't simply wanted to steal money.

They had wanted to make her appear incapable of protecting her own child.

Benjamin walked toward her.

"Naomi, listen to me.""

She looked up.

"I won't let anyone take Grace from you.""

Naomi's eyes filled.

"Promise?""

Benjamin crouched in front of her.

"I promise.""

He took her hands.

"You are her mother. You have done everything for her. You drove two hours with a newborn because you trusted your family to welcome you. And I will spend every resource I have making sure the truth is established.""

Naomi nodded.

Then she wiped her tears.

"I don't want revenge.""

Benjamin looked at her.

"What do you want?""

"I want my daughter to grow up knowing that being powerful doesn't mean you can hurt people.""

He nodded slowly.

"Then that's what we'll teach her.""

Daniel's phone vibrated.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed.

"Mr. Carter.""

Benjamin turned.

"What?""

"Dr. Hargrove's office has responded.""

"And?""

"They confirm that he never signed the declaration.""

Benjamin stared.

"Who did?""

Daniel looked at the document.

"The signature was digitally copied from an older medical report.""

"Can we trace the file?""

"Yes. The document was created on a computer registered to Carter Holdings.""

Benjamin frowned.

"Whose computer?""

Daniel looked down at the access report.

Then he slowly raised his eyes.

"Yours, sir.""

Silence filled the room.

Benjamin stared.

"My computer?""

Daniel nodded.

"The file was created using your executive workstation.""

Benjamin shook his head.

"That's impossible. I never saw it.""

Daniel opened the final access record.

"Someone accessed your office remotely at 11:38 p.m. the night before Naomi arrived.""

He paused.

"The access was approved using your personal security key.""

Benjamin looked toward the door.

His personal security key was kept in a locked drawer in his private office.

Only three people had authorized access.

Benjamin.

Daniel.

And Claire Donovan.

Daniel's voice dropped.

"Sir, there's something else.""

He showed Benjamin the final line of the report.

The remote session had not been initiated from Claire's office.

It had been initiated from a device located inside Benjamin's own residence.

And the device belonged to someone who was supposed to be protecting his family.

Benjamin read the name.

Then he looked at Naomi.

Because the person responsible for the final piece of the plan was someone neither of them had suspected.

*Grace's temporary guardian.*

The woman who had offered to help Naomi during childbirth.

And the woman Benjamin had personally trusted to care for his granddaughter.
