Chapter 2: The Name Behind the Hotel

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Benjamin Carter stood in the middle of the St. Charles Royale lobby, his coat still resting around Naomi's shoulders.

The two men behind him placed their leather briefcases on a nearby table.

One of them, a tall Black man with a close-cropped beard, checked his watch.

The other quietly examined the reception area.

Marcus Bell swallowed.

"Sir, perhaps we should discuss this privately.""

Benjamin didn't move.

"I asked you a question.""

Marcus glanced toward Victoria.

She had stopped smiling.

Her champagne glass remained suspended halfway between her lips and the table.

"Who owns this hotel?"" Benjamin repeated.

Marcus straightened his tie.

"The St. Charles Royale is operated by a hospitality management company, sir.""

"That's not what I asked.""

"Well, technically, the property is held through a private investment group.""

Benjamin nodded slowly.

"And who controls that group?""

Marcus hesitated.

"I don't have that information readily available.""

One of Benjamin's associates stepped forward.

"Mr. Carter, I can provide the ownership documentation.""

Benjamin raised one hand.

"Not yet, Daniel.""

Daniel stopped.

Benjamin looked directly at Marcus.

"My daughter made a reservation. She arrived here with a three-week-old baby. A guest assaulted her in your lobby. You refused to investigate, refused to review your security footage, and ordered her to leave.""

Marcus's face reddened.

"Sir, I was responding to a complaint from one of our most valued guests.""

"Did you see the assault?""

"No, sir.""

"Did you interview witnesses?""

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

"Not at that moment.""

"Did you review the cameras?""

"No.""

"Then tell me, Mr. Bell. What exactly did you investigate?""

Marcus opened his mouth.

Victoria decided to intervene.

"This is getting completely out of hand.""

Benjamin slowly turned toward her.

Victoria lifted her chin.

"Your daughter was being disruptive. I merely asked her to behave appropriately.""

Naomi looked down at Grace.

Benjamin didn't.

"Did you hit my daughter?""

Victoria scoffed.

"I don't appreciate being accused of something so offensive.""

"That wasn't my question.""

"She was aggressive.""

"Did you hit her?""

Victoria glanced at Marcus, expecting him to step in.

He didn't.

Finally, she said, "I may have pushed her hand away.""

Naomi looked up.

"That's not what happened.""

Victoria snapped her fingers in Naomi's direction.

"Nobody asked you.""

Benjamin took one step forward.

"Don't speak to my daughter like that.""

Victoria gave a nervous laugh.

"Listen, I don't know who you think you are, but I have a relationship with this hotel. My husband is friends with people who—"

"Your husband's name?""

Victoria blinked.

"Excuse me?""

"What's your husband's name?""

"Richard Whitmore.""

Benjamin nodded.

"Richard Whitmore. And what does he do?""

"He owns Whitmore Development.""

Daniel quietly opened his briefcase.

Benjamin glanced at him.

"Do we have anything with that name?""

Daniel removed a folder.

"Yes, sir. There are two commercial leases connected to Whitmore Development in our property portfolio.""

Victoria's expression changed.

"What?""

Benjamin turned to Daniel.

"Send those documents to legal. I want the lease terms reviewed.""

Victoria stepped forward.

"You can't be serious.""

Benjamin didn't respond.

Marcus looked between them.

"Mr. Carter, I think there's been a misunderstanding. Mrs.

Whitmore has been a very loyal guest. We have always tried to accommodate her.""

Benjamin looked at him.

"And my daughter?""

Marcus lowered his eyes.

"I'm sorry if she felt uncomfortable.""

Naomi flinched.

Benjamin noticed.

"That's not an apology," he said.

Marcus cleared his throat.

"I apologize for the inconvenience.""

Benjamin's expression remained unchanged.

"Your daughter is three weeks old," he said, speaking to Marcus as if explaining something painfully obvious.

"My daughter drove two hours to attend a meeting. She was tired, carrying a newborn, and minding her own business. A woman struck her in the face. You watched her stand there asking for help, and you decided that the person with the more expensive handbag deserved your protection.""

Marcus's face went pale.

"Sir, I had no intention of—"

"Intentions don't erase decisions.""

Benjamin turned to Naomi.

"Do you want to leave?""

Naomi looked at Grace.

Then at the lobby.

Part of her wanted to run outside, get into her car, and never return.

But another part wanted the truth.

She wanted someone to look at the footage. She wanted someone to acknowledge that she hadn't done anything wrong.

"I want them to know what happened," she whispered.

Benjamin nodded.

"Then that's what we're going to do.""

He turned toward Daniel.

"Call the regional security director. Have the lobby footage preserved immediately. Every camera, every angle. No one deletes anything.""

Daniel took out his phone.

"Already contacting them.""

"Get the hotel operations director here.""

"Understood.""

"And ask legal to send someone.""

Marcus's mouth fell open.

"Sir, with respect, you don't have authority to—"

Benjamin looked at him.

"Do you know who I am?""

Marcus swallowed.

"I believe you're Mr. Benjamin Carter.""

"Good. Then you know I have every reason to be here.""

Victoria laughed nervously.

"Wait. Benjamin Carter?""

Her expression shifted as recognition finally registered.

She had heard the name.

Everyone in Louisiana's commercial property industry had.

Benjamin Carter was the founder of Carter Holdings, a private investment company with interests in commercial real estate, luxury hospitality, transportation, and several regional development projects.

His company had acquired properties in six states.

He rarely gave interviews.

He avoided public appearances.

And he was known for something that had become almost legendary among business executives.

He did not tolerate dishonesty.

But Victoria still didn't understand why he was standing in front of her.

She looked at Marcus.

"Why is he acting like he owns this place?""

Benjamin answered before Marcus could.

"Because he does.""

The lobby seemed to lose its air.

A waiter stopped walking.

A receptionist dropped her pen.

Marcus stared at Benjamin.

"Sir...""

Benjamin continued.

"My company acquired the St. Charles Royale eighteen months ago. The management contract is held through Carter Hospitality Group.""

Victoria's face drained of color.

"No.""

Benjamin glanced toward Daniel.

"Would you like to explain it?""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Certainly, Mr. Carter. The hotel property is owned by St.

Charles Holdings, a subsidiary of Carter Holdings. The operating company reports to our regional hospitality division.""

Marcus gripped the reception counter.

"You're the owner?""

Benjamin looked at him.

"Yes.""

Victoria took a small step backward.

Her confidence was disappearing, but her pride wouldn't let her admit it.

"This is absurd," she said.

"I had no idea who your daughter was.""

Benjamin looked at her for several seconds.

"That's interesting.""

"What?""

"You believe that would have changed anything?""

Victoria frowned.

Benjamin continued.

"If my daughter had been wearing a designer dress, would you have treated her differently? If she had arrived in a limousine, would you have kept your hands to yourself?""

Victoria looked away.

"I was simply protecting the hotel's standards.""

"No," Benjamin said.

"You were protecting your ego.""

Marcus stepped forward.

"Mr. Carter, may I speak with you privately?""

Benjamin turned.

"About what?""

"Perhaps we can resolve this without involving the regional office.""

Daniel closed his briefcase.

"That's not possible.""

Marcus frowned.

"Excuse me?""

Daniel spoke calmly.

"An alleged physical assault involving a guest, followed by a potential failure to preserve security evidence and a refusal to follow guest safety procedures, requires formal reporting.""

Victoria's head snapped toward him.

"Physical assault? That's an exaggeration.""

Naomi finally spoke.

"You slapped me.""

Victoria pointed at her.

"Stop saying that!""

Benjamin stepped between them.

"One more word directed at my daughter, and this conversation will be conducted through counsel.""

Victoria's hand dropped.

For the first time since Naomi entered the hotel, she was silent.

A young receptionist approached carefully.

"Mr. Carter?""

Benjamin turned.

"Yes?""

"My name is Emily. I was working the desk when Miss Carter arrived.""

Marcus looked at her sharply.

"Emily, this isn't the time.""

Emily swallowed.

"I think you should know something.""

Benjamin waited.

Emily glanced at Naomi.

"Miss Carter checked in with me before Mrs. Whitmore approached her. She had a reservation under the Carter family account.""

Marcus stiffened.

"That's enough.""

Emily continued.

"I was about to give her the room keys, but Mrs. Whitmore complained that she didn't want to share the lobby with someone she considered inappropriate. Mr. Bell told me to stop the check-in.""

Naomi slowly lifted her head.

She hadn't known that.

Benjamin's expression darkened.

"Why wasn't she checked in?""

Emily looked down.

"Because Mr. Bell said Mrs. Whitmore was a VIP.""

Marcus stepped away from the counter.

"Emily, you're making serious accusations.""

"I'm telling the truth.""

Benjamin nodded.

"Thank you, Emily.""

Then he looked at Daniel.

"Make sure her statement is recorded.""

Daniel nodded.

"Of course.""

Victoria suddenly raised her voice.

"Can we stop pretending this is some kind of criminal investigation? I have been a guest here for years. I deserve respect.""

Benjamin looked at her.

"Respect is not something you purchase with a hotel bill.""

Victoria's cheeks turned red.

She reached for her handbag.

"I'll be speaking with my attorney.""

"Please do.""

"And my husband will hear about this.""

"Please make sure he does.""

Victoria turned toward the elevators.

But before she could take another step, Daniel's phone rang.

He answered, listened for several seconds, and then looked toward Benjamin.

"Sir, we've got a problem.""

Benjamin frowned.

"What is it?""

Daniel lowered his voice.

"The footage from the lobby confirms the assault. But there's something else.""

"What?""

"Mrs. Whitmore wasn't the only person involved in this incident.""

Daniel looked toward Marcus.

"And the footage shows that someone gave security instructions before your daughter even arrived.""

Marcus suddenly looked terrified.

May you like

Because the next question was going to be about a decision he had made that morning.

And he knew exactly what the cameras had recorded.
