Chapter 5: The Secret in the Family Trust

Benjamin didn't immediately open the folder.

He looked at the name on the access report again.

*Harold Pierce.*

For thirty-one years, Harold had handled the Carter family's legal affairs.

He had drafted Benjamin's business agreements, protected his commercial acquisitions, and prepared the documents that governed his estate.

Benjamin had attended Harold's daughter's wedding.

He had helped pay for Harold's medical treatment after a serious accident.

He had trusted the man with almost every confidential document he owned.

Now his name appeared beside an unauthorized access to Naomi's trust.

"Daniel," Benjamin said, "call Harold.""

Daniel hesitated.

"Would you prefer I contact our external counsel first?""

"No. Call him.""

Daniel made the call.

It rang four times.

Then a man's voice answered.

"Daniel? Is something wrong?""

"Mr. Pierce, this is Daniel Reeves. Mr. Carter would like to speak with you.""

There was a pause.

"Benjamin?""

Daniel handed the phone to Benjamin.

"Harold.""

"Benjamin. What a surprise.""

"Did you access Naomi's trust yesterday?""

Silence.

Then Harold cleared his throat.

"I'd need to check my records.""

"You don't need to check. The access log is in front of me.""

"Well, I may have reviewed some documents at Evelyn's request.""

Benjamin looked toward Naomi.

"Why?""

"She expressed concerns about the family estate structure.""

"What concerns?""

"She wanted clarification about the trust provisions.""

Benjamin's voice became colder.

"Did I authorize you to discuss my daughter's trust with my wife?""

"Benjamin, I believe Evelyn has certain legal interests as your spouse.""

"That's not an answer.""

Harold sighed.

"Perhaps we should discuss this in person.""

"Fine. My office. One hour.""

Benjamin ended the call.

Naomi shifted Grace against her shoulder.

"Daddy?""

"Yes?""

"Please don't let this become a bigger problem because of me.""

Benjamin looked at her as if she had said something unbelievable.

"Naomi, someone hit you. Someone tried to deny you access to your room. And now we're discovering that confidential family documents may have been accessed without permission.""

He paused.

"None of that is your fault.""

Naomi nodded, but she still looked troubled.

Benjamin noticed.

"What's wrong?""

She took a breath.

"I think Evelyn is going to say I did something.""

"Let her.""

"She always makes things sound like I misunderstood.""

Benjamin studied his daughter's face.

"Has she done that before?""

Naomi didn't answer immediately.

Then she spoke.

"When I was sixteen, she told you I had stolen money from her purse.""

Benjamin's expression changed.

"I remember that.""

Naomi nodded.

"You grounded me for three weeks.""

"I thought you admitted taking it.""

"I admitted taking twenty dollars.""

Benjamin frowned.

"Because she said you had taken two hundred.""

Naomi looked at him.

"I didn't take two hundred dollars, Daddy. I borrowed twenty from your desk because I needed money for a school trip. I was going to tell you.""

Benjamin stared at her.

For a moment, he seemed unable to speak.

"Why didn't you tell me this before?""

"Because Evelyn said if I made trouble, she'd tell you I was becoming like my mother.""

Benjamin looked down.

Naomi's biological mother had been a gentle woman. She had died when Naomi was four, and her memory remained one of the most protected parts of Benjamin's life.

He remembered that argument.

He remembered Evelyn telling him that Naomi needed discipline.

He remembered sending his daughter to her room.

And he remembered Naomi crying behind a closed bedroom door.

He had thought it was teenage stubbornness.

Now he wasn't so sure.

"Did she say that to you often?"" he asked.

Naomi nodded.

"Not always directly.""

Benjamin looked toward the hotel windows.

The afternoon sun reflected off the passing cars outside.

He had spent decades building a business empire.

He had negotiated with hostile investors, defeated aggressive competitors, and walked away from deals worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Yet he had failed to recognize what was happening inside his own home.

His phone vibrated.

A message from his security director appeared.

*Private vehicle arriving. Mrs. Carter is requesting access to the property.*

Benjamin looked toward Daniel.

"She's coming here.""

Daniel nodded.

"Would you like security to escort her upstairs?""

"No. Bring her to the conference room. And make sure the lobby footage remains preserved.""

He looked at Naomi.

"You don't have to see her.""

Naomi's expression was uncertain.

"I think I should.""

"Are you sure?""

"Yes.""

She looked down at Grace.

"I've spent years being told I misunderstood things. I want to hear her explain it while everyone is listening.""

Benjamin nodded.

"All right.""

He asked Emily, the receptionist, to arrange a private room for Naomi and the baby.

Emily returned with a warm bottle of water and a small basket containing diapers, wipes, and a clean blanket.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

Naomi looked at her.

"You didn't do anything.""

"I should have spoken up sooner.""

Naomi offered a tired smile.

"Thank you for telling the truth.""

Emily nodded and led her toward a quiet lounge adjoining the hotel's private conference area.

Benjamin watched his daughter disappear through the doorway.

Then he turned toward Daniel.

"Get me the complete trust agreement.""

Daniel placed another folder on the table.

"We received the original documents from legal archives. There's an additional provision you may want to review.""

Benjamin opened it.

The trust had been established by his father, Samuel Carter, shortly before Naomi's first birthday.

Its primary purpose was to secure Naomi's financial future.

But the document contained a special clause.

If Benjamin died or became permanently incapacitated, Naomi would become the sole beneficiary of a protected family trust.

The trust's assets included commercial properties, investment accounts, and a controlling interest in a private holding company.

Daniel pointed to a section near the bottom.

"Your father added a provision specifically preventing a spouse, step-parent, guardian, or unrelated beneficiary from exercising control over Naomi's inheritance.""

Benjamin read the sentence twice.

"Why did my father include this?""

Daniel hesitated.

"There's a letter attached.""

He handed it over.

The letter was dated twenty-eight years earlier.

Benjamin recognized his father's handwriting immediately.

He unfolded the paper.

Benjamin,

You are building something extraordinary, and I am proud of you. But remember that wealth has a way of attracting people who confuse love with access.

Naomi is your greatest responsibility. Protect her independence. Never allow anyone to convince her that she must earn her place in this family.

If she ever has a child, make sure that child knows the difference between being wealthy and being loved.

Benjamin stopped reading.

His eyes rested on the final paragraph.

And one more thing. If anyone ever tries to take Naomi's inheritance, remember that I placed one additional protection in the trust. It cannot be activated by you alone.

Benjamin looked at Daniel.

"What does that mean?""

Daniel examined the document.

"The trust requires an independent trustee to authorize certain changes. Your father appointed one.""

"Who?""

Daniel turned to the signature page.

There was a name.

*Margaret Ellis.*

Benjamin frowned.

"Margaret Ellis?""

"Your father's former financial adviser.""

"She's been retired for years.""

"Apparently, she's still listed as an active independent trustee.""

Benjamin leaned back.

"Find her.""

Daniel immediately began making calls.

Meanwhile, across town, Evelyn Carter sat in the back of a black luxury SUV.

She had removed her sunglasses and was staring at her phone.

Her driver glanced at her through the rearview mirror.

"Everything all right, Mrs. Carter?""

Evelyn ignored him.

She opened a message thread.

*HAROLD: Benjamin has requested a meeting. He knows about the access.*

Evelyn typed quickly.

*EVELYN: Did you prepare the amendment?*

Three dots appeared.

Then disappeared.

Finally, Harold responded.

*HAROLD: Not yet. We need Margaret's authorization.*

Evelyn gripped the phone.

*EVELYN: I told you she wouldn't cooperate.*

*HAROLD: Then we need another approach.*

Evelyn stared out the window.

She had spent months preparing for this.

She had convinced herself that Naomi would eventually become a problem.

A young widow with a newborn and a wealthy father was precisely the kind of person who could disrupt the carefully constructed future Evelyn had imagined.

Benjamin's wealth was substantial.

But the family trust was different.

It had protections that even Benjamin couldn't override alone.

And Evelyn wanted control of it.

Her phone rang.

The caller was her husband.

She answered immediately.

"Benjamin, darling.""

"Don't call me darling.""

Evelyn sat upright.

"Excuse me?""

"Come to the hotel conference room. Now.""

"I'm already on my way.""

"Good.""

Benjamin paused.

"And Evelyn?""

"Yes?""

"Don't delete anything.""

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

"I have no idea what you're talking about.""

"Then you shouldn't have anything to worry about.""

He ended the call.

Evelyn stared at the screen.

For the first time, she considered that Benjamin might actually investigate her.

But she had one advantage.

She knew something he didn't.

And she was prepared to use it.

Twenty minutes later, Evelyn entered the hotel's private conference room.

She wore a black designer dress and carried a structured leather handbag.

She looked composed.

Almost offended.

Benjamin was waiting at the head of the table.

Daniel stood beside him.

Marcus Bell sat at the far end, having been instructed to remain available for the investigation.

Evelyn looked around.

"Where is Naomi?""

"With Grace.""

"Why isn't she here?""

"Because this meeting isn't about making her uncomfortable.""

Evelyn placed her handbag on the table.

"Benjamin, I think you've been given a very distorted version of events.""

Benjamin pushed the hotel access report toward her.

"Did you send this instruction?""

Evelyn glanced at it.

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because I had concerns.""

"About my daughter?""

"About her behavior.""

Benjamin leaned forward.

"What behavior?""

Evelyn crossed her arms.

"She's become increasingly unpredictable. She has a history of emotional reactions, and I thought it would be wise to establish boundaries.""

Marcus shifted uncomfortably.

Benjamin noticed.

"Did you tell Marcus to prevent her from accessing her suite?""

"I told him to verify her identity.""

"Her identity was already verified.""

"Then he should have handled the situation better.""

Benjamin's expression hardened.

"Don't transfer your decision to him.""

Evelyn sighed.

"Fine. I wanted to make sure she understood that she couldn't simply walk into this hotel and use the Carter name whenever she wanted.""

Benjamin stared at her.

"She's a Carter.""

Evelyn's face tightened.

"She is your daughter. That doesn't mean she should control everything.""

"Who said she wanted to control anything?""

Evelyn looked toward Daniel.

Then she returned her attention to Benjamin.

"Let's stop pretending. You know exactly why she came here.""

"She came because I invited her.""

"She came because she wanted access to the family trust.""

Benjamin slowly stood.

"That is a lie.""

Evelyn opened her handbag and removed a document.

She slid it across the table.

"Then explain this.""

Benjamin picked it up.

It was a printed copy of an email.

The message appeared to have been sent from Naomi's personal account to Harold Pierce.

*Subject: Urgent discussion regarding trust distribution.*

Benjamin read the first paragraph.

His expression changed.

The email requested an immediate review of Naomi's inheritance rights and asked whether the trust could be transferred into a new account before Grace's first birthday.

He looked at Evelyn.

"Where did you get this?""

"Harold provided it.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"May I see that?""

Benjamin handed it to him.

Daniel examined the document.

Then he looked up.

"Mr. Carter, there's a problem.""

"What?""

Daniel pointed to the email address.

"This message did not originate from Miss Carter's account.""

Evelyn's face suddenly lost its composure.

Daniel continued.

"The domain is almost identical, but the address contains an additional character.""

Benjamin looked at Evelyn.

"Where did you get this email?""

Evelyn opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, Daniel's phone rang.

He listened for a few seconds.

Then he looked at Benjamin.

"Sir, Margaret Ellis has returned my call.""

Benjamin straightened.

"What did she say?""

Daniel swallowed.

"She says she never authorized any changes to Naomi's trust.""

He paused.

"And she wants to tell you something about your wife.""

Evelyn abruptly stood.

"That woman has no business interfering in our family.""

Benjamin looked at her.

"Sit down.""

For the first time, Evelyn didn't immediately obey.

May you like

Because she realized the woman she had spent months trying to bypass was finally coming forward.

And Margaret Ellis knew exactly what Evelyn had been planning.
