Chapter 3: The Security Footage

The lobby had changed.

Only ten minutes earlier, Victoria Whitmore had controlled every conversation with a raised eyebrow and a sharp command.

Now she stood beside the grand staircase, clutching her handbag with both hands.

Marcus Bell was no longer standing confidently behind the reception desk.

He had moved several feet away from it.

And Naomi Carter was sitting on a velvet sofa with her daughter resting peacefully against her chest.

Benjamin had asked a member of the hotel staff to bring a warm bottle of water and a clean blanket.

He sat beside Naomi, one hand resting gently on her shoulder.

"How long has your cheek been hurting?"" he asked.

"Since she hit me.""

"Does your head hurt?""

"No.""

"Are you dizzy?""

"A little tired. That's all.""

Benjamin studied her face.

"Naomi, I want you to be examined.""

"Daddy, I'm fine.""

"I know you want to be strong. You don't have to prove anything to me.""

Naomi looked down at Grace.

"I just didn't want her to see that.""

Benjamin's eyes softened.

"See what?""

"People treating her mother like she doesn't matter.""

He was quiet for a moment.

Then he took her hand.

"Listen to me. You could be wearing an old coat, carrying a torn bag, and driving a car with no air conditioning. None of that would make you less worthy of respect.""

Naomi blinked back tears.

"I know.""

"No, sweetheart. I need you to believe it.""

Across the lobby, Daniel was speaking with a hotel security supervisor.

The supervisor, a man named Robert Hayes, was in his late forties and wore a dark uniform with a silver badge.

He held a tablet.

"Mr. Carter, we've retrieved the footage from the main entrance and the reception area.""

Benjamin stood.

"Play it.""

Robert looked toward Marcus.

"Mr. Bell requested that we wait until corporate authorization.""

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

"Corporate authorization is standing right here.""

Robert nodded.

"Understood.""

He connected the tablet to the hotel's large presentation screen, normally used for promotional displays.

The screen flickered.

A recording appeared.

It showed the lobby from a camera positioned above the main entrance.

Naomi entered at 11:42 a.m.

She was carrying Grace's infant carrier and a diaper bag.

The recording showed her approaching the reception desk.

Emily greeted her.

Naomi smiled and handed over her identification.

There was no shouting.

No argument.

No aggressive movement.

She simply stood there, waiting.

Then Victoria appeared.

The camera captured her approaching Naomi from the side.

It captured her pointing at the diaper bag.

It captured Naomi taking a step backward.

And then it happened.

Victoria raised her right hand.

Her palm struck Naomi across the face.

The sound wasn't audible, but the movement was unmistakable.

Naomi's head turned sharply.

Her body shifted as she instinctively protected her baby.

A woman near the lounge covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

Victoria pointed at Naomi and spoke angrily.

Naomi remained still.

Then Marcus approached.

He spoke to Victoria first.

He didn't look at Naomi's cheek.

He didn't ask whether the baby was okay.

He simply gestured toward the entrance.

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Benjamin stared at the screen.

Then he turned toward Marcus.

"Do you still want to tell me there was a misunderstanding?""

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

"Mr. Carter, I acknowledge that the footage looks unfavorable.""

"Unfavorable?""

"I wasn't present for the initial interaction.""

"You were present for the part where my daughter told you she had been hit.""

Marcus nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

"And what did you do?""

"I attempted to de-escalate the situation.""

Benjamin looked at him.

"By removing the victim?""

Marcus said nothing.

Victoria suddenly interrupted.

"That video doesn't show what happened before!""

Benjamin turned.

"What happened before?""

Victoria lifted her chin.

"She was rude to me.""

Naomi stared at her.

"I said I had a reservation.""

"You were being disrespectful.""

"I was asking you to stop insulting me.""

Victoria threw up her hands.

"See? This is exactly what I'm talking about!""

Benjamin looked toward Robert.

"Are there other camera angles?""

"Yes, sir. Two additional angles cover the reception area.""

"Play them.""

Robert changed the recording.

The next video showed the front desk from the side.

This time, the audio was clear.

Victoria's voice filled the lobby.

"People like you shouldn't be in this hotel.""

Then came the slap.

Naomi's quiet response followed.

"I'm sorry.""

Victoria laughed.

"Then leave.""

The video continued.

It captured the conversation between Victoria and Marcus.

It also captured something nobody in the lobby had noticed.

As Marcus approached the reception desk, Victoria leaned close and whispered something.

Robert paused the recording.

"Would you like me to enhance the audio?""

"Yes," Benjamin replied.

A few seconds later, the recording played again.

Victoria's voice was audible.

"That woman doesn't belong here. Get her out before she makes a scene. I don't want people like that around me.""

Marcus responded.

"Don't worry. I'll handle it.""

Benjamin looked at him.

"People like that?""

Marcus shifted his weight.

"She was referring to the situation.""

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

Even he seemed unable to believe what he was hearing.

The recording continued.

Victoria spoke again.

"Good. And don't forget what we discussed this morning.""

Marcus looked toward the camera.

Then he replied.

"Everything is taken care of.""

Robert stopped the video.

Benjamin slowly turned toward the manager.

"What did she mean?""

Marcus looked confused.

"Sir?""

"What did you discuss this morning?""

"Nothing relevant.""

Victoria stepped forward.

"Marcus, don't you dare.""

The warning came too quickly.

Too naturally.

Benjamin noticed.

So did Daniel.

"Mrs. Whitmore," Benjamin said, "what did you discuss with my manager this morning?""

Victoria shook her head.

"Nothing.""

Daniel reopened his briefcase.

"Mr. Carter, I believe I know what they're referring to.""

He removed a printed document.

"At 9:16 this morning, the hotel received an internal request concerning Miss Naomi Carter's reservation.""

Naomi looked up.

"An internal request?""

Daniel nodded.

"Yes. It was submitted through the guest relations system.""

Benjamin took the document.

The request contained a short note.

*Guest: Naomi Carter.*

*Special handling instruction: Do not provide suite access until management approval. Potential reputational concern.*

Below it was the name of the employee who had submitted the instruction.

Marcus Bell.

Benjamin read it twice.

Then he looked up.

"Why?""

Marcus's face was now completely white.

"That was a routine precaution.""

"A precaution against what?""

Marcus looked at Victoria.

She turned away.

Benjamin continued.

"Who requested it?""

Marcus hesitated.

"Mrs. Whitmore mentioned that an individual might arrive claiming to have a connection to the ownership group.""

Naomi stared at him.

"What?""

Marcus avoided her eyes.

"She said someone might attempt to access a private suite using the Carter name.""

Naomi shook her head.

"Why would she say that?""

Victoria immediately answered.

"Because there are people who use wealthy families to get things they haven't earned.""

Benjamin's voice dropped.

"Be careful.""

Victoria ignored him.

"Your daughter arrived looking like she had been sleeping in her car. How was anyone supposed to know she was actually related to you?""

Naomi's eyes filled with tears again.

Benjamin's expression became frighteningly calm.

"She wasn't required to prove who she was to you.""

He turned to Daniel.

"Get me the original reservation.""

Daniel tapped on his tablet.

A moment later, he handed Benjamin another document.

It was the booking confirmation.

The reservation had been created three weeks earlier, before Grace was born.

It included a private suite, a nursery setup, and a note requesting a quiet room away from elevators.

The reservation was under the name Naomi Carter.

It was authorized through the Carter family account.

And it had been confirmed by the hotel.

Benjamin looked at Marcus.

"You had this reservation in your system.""

Marcus nodded.

"Yes, sir.""

"Then why was my daughter treated as if she had broken into the building?""

Marcus took a breath.

"I was trying to avoid a situation.""

Benjamin looked toward Victoria.

"By following her instructions?""

Marcus didn't answer.

Victoria suddenly became defensive.

"I was only trying to protect my reputation as a guest.""

Naomi spoke quietly.

"You told him not to let me into my room.""

Victoria looked at her.

"Because you didn't belong here.""

Naomi stood.

Grace stirred slightly.

"I did belong here," she said.

"I had a reservation. I paid for nothing because my father arranged it. I came here because I was invited. And you decided that my clothes meant I was lying.""

Victoria rolled her eyes.

"Oh, please.""

Naomi's voice trembled, but she didn't look away.

"You hit me while I was holding my daughter.""

Victoria folded her arms.

"You're making it sound worse than it was.""

Benjamin stepped forward.

"She doesn't have to make it sound like anything. The cameras have already shown us.""

Daniel's phone vibrated again.

He checked the screen.

Then his expression changed.

"Mr. Carter.""

Benjamin turned.

"What now?""

"Corporate compliance has reviewed the guest relations records.""

"And?""

Daniel hesitated.

"There's another instruction attached to the reservation.""

He handed Benjamin the tablet.

Benjamin read the message.

His eyes narrowed.

It was dated the previous evening.

*If Naomi Carter arrives, do not upgrade, accommodate, or provide access to the private family suite without my approval. She may attempt to use her father's name to obtain special privileges.*

The message had been sent from a corporate guest relations account.

The sender's name appeared at the bottom.

*Evelyn Carter.*

Naomi's face went completely still.

"Daddy?""

Benjamin stared at the screen.

He knew that name.

Everyone in his family knew that name.

Evelyn Carter was his wife.

And Naomi's stepmother.

The woman who had called Naomi every Sunday since Grace was born.

The woman who had sent flowers to the hospital.

The woman who had insisted that Naomi should never feel alone after losing her husband.

Naomi looked at the message again.

"Why would Evelyn do that?""

Benjamin didn't answer immediately.

He was reading the attached internal note.

There was another line beneath the instruction.

*This guest is not to be informed that the ownership family has authorized her stay. If she creates a disturbance, management should remove her discreetly.*

Benjamin slowly lowered the tablet.

Then his phone rang.

The caller ID displayed one name.

*EVELYN.*

He answered.

"Benjamin," his wife's voice sounded cheerful.

"How is Naomi? Has she arrived at the hotel?""

Benjamin looked at his daughter.

Then at the manager.

Then at the woman who had slapped Naomi.

His voice was quiet.

"Yes, Evelyn. She's here.""

"Wonderful. Is everything arranged?""

Benjamin paused.

Then he asked the question that made the entire lobby go silent.

"Why did you instruct my hotel to throw my daughter out?""

On the other end of the line, Evelyn stopped speaking.

May you like

And for the first time in twenty-two years of marriage, Benjamin heard his wife say something he never expected.

"Benjamin, you need to listen to me before you let Naomi tell you another lie.""
