Chapter 9: The Woman Who Pretended to Love Them
Marcus spent the night reviewing every piece of evidence.
By sunrise, he had built a timeline.
Vanessa entered his life.
She became close to Nia.
She gained Marcus’s trust.
Then slowly, she began changing the story.
The problem wasn’t that Vanessa hated Nia from the beginning.
The problem was that she was patient.
She waited.
She studied.
She learned exactly what people wanted to believe.
And then she used it against them.
At 8:30 a.m., Marcus received an unexpected visitor.
Vanessa.
She stood outside the house wearing a calm expression.
Almost peaceful.
As if she hadn’t destroyed everything.
Marcus opened the door but didn’t step aside.
“What do you want?””
She looked past him.
“I want to talk to Nia.””
“No.””
Her face hardened slightly.
“You can’t keep my daughter from me.””
Marcus almost laughed.
“Your daughter?””
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“You’re angry.””
“I’m awake.””
She stared at him.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.””
“I know exactly what I’m doing.””
“No, Marcus.””
She stepped closer.
“You’re destroying your family because you’re emotional.””
He looked at her.
“That’s your excuse for everything.””
“You believe a child over your wife.””
“I believe evidence.””
For the first time, her expression cracked.
“What evidence?””
Marcus smiled slightly.
“The kind you tried to hide.””
Silence.
Then Vanessa recovered.
“You’re making a mistake.””
“No.””
He looked directly at her.
“I made my mistake when I trusted you.””
Her eyes became cold.
“Do you really think Nia will thank you?””
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
“She’ll leave you eventually.””
He stared.
“She’ll grow up and realize you’re not enough.””
Marcus felt anger rise.
But he stayed calm.
Because now he understood Vanessa’s weapon.
Fear.
She used fear because she had nothing else.
“You spent years trying to make a child feel unwanted.””
Vanessa looked away.
“And you still think you’re the victim?””
Marcus stepped back.
“You need to leave.””
She smiled.
Not sadly.
Not angrily.
Confidently.
“Ask Patricia.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
“Ask her what really happened the night your wife died.””
His expression changed.
Vanessa noticed.
And smiled wider.
“You still don’t know everything.””
Then she turned.
“Goodbye, Marcus.””
She walked away.
And for the first time, Marcus wondered if Vanessa was hiding something even bigger than he imagined.
Later that day, Marcus met Patricia again.
She looked terrified.
“You spoke to Vanessa.””
Marcus nodded.
“She told me to ask you what really happened.””
Patricia closed her eyes.
“She knows.””
“What does she know?””
“That I kept something from you.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“Tell me.””
Patricia opened a folder.
Inside was an old photograph.
A photograph of Vanessa.
Jonathan.
And Marcus’s late wife.
Together.
Before Marcus ever met Vanessa.
Marcus stared.
“They knew each other.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Patricia looked at the picture.
“They were all connected through the same company.””
“What company?””
“The company that handled your wife’s life insurance.””
Marcus felt sick.
“And Vanessa?””
“She was never interested in you.””
The words hurt.
Even though he already suspected them.
“She was interested in what your wife left behind.””
Marcus looked down.
“My wife’s insurance.””
Patricia nodded.
“But there’s something else.””
“What?””
Patricia slid another document across the table.
Marcus read it.
A beneficiary change request.
His wife’s signature.
Except something was wrong.
The signature looked similar.
But not identical.
Marcus looked up.
“This is fake.””
Patricia nodded.
“Yes.””
“Who forged it?””
Patricia whispered:
“The person who benefited from it.””
Marcus stared at the document.
Then his phone rang.
It was Caleb.
Marcus answered immediately.
“What happened?””
Caleb’s voice shook.
“Dad…”
“What?””
“I found Mom’s old phone.””
Marcus went silent.
“What phone?””
“The one she had before the accident.””
“How?””
“It was hidden in the attic.””
Marcus stood.
“Is it working?””
“Yes.””
A pause.
Then Caleb said:
“There’s a video on it.””
Marcus’s heart started racing.
“What kind of video?””
Caleb swallowed.
“One recorded the night before the accident.””
Marcus gripped the phone.
“Play it.””
“I did.””
“And?””
Caleb’s voice became quiet.
“Dad…”
“What did you see?””
A long silence.
Then:
“It shows Mom meeting Vanessa.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“What were they talking about?””
Caleb whispered:
“They were talking about you.””
May you like
And then Caleb said the sentence that changed everything.
“Dad… Mom knew Vanessa was dangerous.””
