Chapter 12: The Truth Behind the Accident

Marcus went directly to Patricia’s office.

He didn’t call.

He didn’t warn her.

He needed answers.

When Patricia opened the door and saw him holding the necklace, her face changed.

“You found it.””

Marcus stepped inside.

“You had this.””

She closed the door.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because your wife gave it to me.””

Marcus stopped.

“What?””

“The night before she died.””

Patricia sat down.

“She knew something was wrong.””

Marcus placed the necklace on the table.

“Tell me everything.””

Patricia looked exhausted.

“I met your wife because she asked for legal advice.””

“About Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

Marcus waited.

“She had discovered Vanessa wasn’t who she claimed to be.””

“How?””

“Financial records.””

Patricia opened a file.

“Vanessa had been connected to several cases involving wealthy families.””

Marcus looked at the documents.

“She targeted people?””

Patricia nodded.

“She built relationships with people who had valuable assets.””

Marcus felt sick.

“My wife figured it out.””

“Yes.””

“What was she going to do?””

“Expose her.””

Silence.

Then Marcus asked:

“And Vanessa found out.””

Patricia nodded.

“She panicked.””

The evidence was overwhelming.

Vanessa had created a carefully designed plan.

She didn’t meet Marcus by accident.

She researched him.

She learned about his finances.

She learned about his wife’s insurance.

She learned about Nia.

And then she positioned herself as the person the family needed.

The perfect helper.

The perfect wife.

The perfect stepmother.

Until she wasn’t.

Marcus returned home late that night.

Nia was waiting.

“You found something.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“About Mom?””

“Yes.””

She looked afraid.

Marcus sat beside her.

“Your mother loved you.””

Nia nodded.

“I know.””

“She fought to protect you.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“She did?””

“Yes.””

Marcus showed her the necklace.

“She gave this to someone because she knew something bad might happen.””

Nia touched it carefully.

“She wore that every day.””

“I know.””

For a moment, they sat together.

Then Nia whispered:

“I remember one more thing.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

“After the accident.””

“What about it?””

“Vanessa came to the hospital.””

Marcus froze.

“She did?””

“Yes.””

“What did she do?””

“She came into my room.””

Marcus’s voice became quiet.

“What did she say?””

Nia looked terrified.

“She said…”

She stopped.

Marcus waited.

“She said, ‘If you tell anyone what you saw, your daddy will lose everything.’”

Marcus felt rage and heartbreak collide.

She had threatened a five-year-old.

For years.

“Nia.””

She looked at him.

“You were never the reason bad things happened.””

She cried.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“I know.””

“But I thought you’d hate me.””

Marcus hugged her.

“I could never hate you.””

The next morning, Marcus and his attorney prepared everything.

The evidence was finally enough.

The accident.

The fraud.

The false custody attempt.

The emotional abuse.

Everything.

But before they could act, Marcus received one final message.

From Vanessa.

I have something you need.

A location followed.

Marcus stared.

His attorney looked concerned.

“Don’t go alone.””

Marcus nodded.

He knew better.

But he also knew something else.

Vanessa had spent years controlling the truth.

Now she wanted to reveal something.

He arrived at the abandoned warehouse at sunset.

Vanessa stood inside.

No makeup.

No confidence.

Just exhaustion.

“You came.””

Marcus kept his distance.

“What do you want?””

She looked at him.

“I want you to know I didn’t plan everything.””

Marcus almost laughed.

“You planned enough.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“There was someone else.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

Vanessa looked toward the darkness behind him.

“You think Jonathan was helping me.””

“Wasn’t he?””

She shook her head.

“He was helping someone above both of us.””

Marcus stared.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked terrified.

Then she whispered:

“The person who gave me your name in the first place.””

Marcus felt cold.

“What person?””

Vanessa took a step back.

“The person who knew your wife would die.””

A sound came from behind the warehouse door.

Someone else was there.

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

And said:

“You were never the target, Marcus.””

May you like

The door slowly opened.

And the person standing there was someone he never expected.
