Chapter 2: The Pictures She Never Wanted Him to See
Marcus stared at Caleb.
“What do you mean?””
Caleb looked toward Vanessa.
For the first time, he didn’t look afraid.
He looked tired.
“I mean… tonight wasn’t the first time Mom did something like this.””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“Caleb, don’t.””
But Marcus raised his hand.
“No.””
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Let him speak.””
Caleb unlocked his phone.
His fingers shook.
“I took pictures.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“You what?””
“I wanted Dad to know.””
Marcus took the phone.
The first picture appeared.
Nia sitting on the floor while Vanessa pushed a plate of food toward her with her foot.
Marcus frowned.
“When was this?””
Caleb looked down.
“Three weeks ago.””
Another picture.
Nia sleeping on a thin blanket in the laundry room.
Marcus stopped breathing.
“Why was she sleeping there?””
Vanessa answered quickly.
“She was being difficult.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Difficult enough to sleep on a laundry room floor?””
“She refused to listen.””
Another picture.
Nia standing outside beside a trash bin.
Inside the bin was a birthday cake.
Marcus recognized it immediately.
It was the cake he had ordered before leaving for his business trip.
The cake with twelve pink candles.
The cake Nia had been excited about.
His hand tightened around the phone.
“What happened?””
Nobody answered.
Finally, Nia whispered:
“She said nobody wanted a party for me.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
He felt sick.
“Nia…”
She looked away.
“I thought maybe she was right.””
That sentence hurt him more than anything.
Because children only believe things like that when someone has repeated them enough times.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“You’re making me look like a monster.””
Marcus turned.
“You’re doing that yourself.””
Her face hardened.
“I have sacrificed everything for this family.””
“You hurt my daughter.””
“I raised her!””
“No.””
Marcus pointed toward the phone.
“You controlled her.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“You have no idea what she’s like when you’re not here.””
Marcus looked at Caleb.
“Is this true?””
Caleb shook his head.
“No.””
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“Caleb.””
“No, Mom.””
His voice cracked.
“You told me not to tell Dad because he’d believe Nia.””
Marcus looked at his son.
“Believe her about what?””
Caleb hesitated.
Then he said the words nobody expected.
“She said Nia wasn’t really family.””
Nia’s eyes filled with tears.
Marcus turned slowly toward Vanessa.
“What did you say to my daughter?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I said she needed to understand her place.””
Marcus felt anger rise in his chest.
“She is my daughter.””
“She’s your stepdaughter.””
The moment the words left Vanessa’s mouth, everyone went silent.
Marcus walked closer.
“She has my name.””
“She has my protection.””
“She has my heart.””
Then he pointed toward the door.
“And you have one hour to leave.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“You can’t be serious.””
“I have never been more serious.””
But before she could answer, Nia reached for Marcus’s hand.
“Daddy?””
He immediately softened.
“What is it?””
She looked toward the hallway.
“There’s something else.””
Marcus followed her gaze.
“What?””
Nia slowly walked toward her bedroom.
Everyone followed.
She opened the closet.
Inside was a suitcase.
Packed.
Marcus stopped.
“Whose is that?””
Nia didn’t answer.
He opened it.
Inside were her clothes.
Her books.
Her stuffed animal.
Everything she loved.
Everything she owned.
On top was a handwritten list.
Marcus picked it up.
His eyes moved across the page.
The handwriting belonged to Vanessa.
The list wasn’t a packing list.
It was an instruction list.
School records.
Clothes.
Medication.
Personal items.
And at the bottom, one sentence:
Everything must be ready before Marcus gets home.
Marcus felt the room spinning.
He looked at Vanessa.
“You were going to send her away.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“She needs someone who can handle her.””
“She’s a child.””
“She’s a problem.””
Marcus stared at her.
Then he noticed something else inside the suitcase.
An envelope.
With Nia’s name written on it.
He opened it.
Inside was a letter.
A letter Nia had written but never sent.
Daddy,
I’m sorry I’m difficult to love.
Marcus’s hands began shaking.
He looked at his daughter.
And for the first time that night, Vanessa looked afraid.
Because Marcus had finally seen the damage.
Not just what she had done.
But what she had made Nia believe.
Then Caleb’s phone suddenly rang.
Everyone looked over.
Caleb stared at the screen.
His face turned pale.
Marcus noticed.
“Who is it?””
Caleb slowly looked up.
“Dad…”
His voice trembled.
“It’s the person Mom was sending Nia to.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Answer it.””
Caleb did.
A woman’s voice came through the speaker.
“Hello? I’m calling about the child you’re sending tonight…”
Marcus froze.
Because he recognized the voice.
It belonged to someone Vanessa had claimed she never contacted.
His own sister.
And she sounded terrified.
“Marcus,” the woman said.
“You need to know what Vanessa told me about Nia.””
The call went silent for a moment.
Then his sister whispered:
“She said you were going to abandon your daughter.””
May you like
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
And realized the betrayal was much bigger than he thought.
