Chapter 5: The Secret Nia Carried Alone

Marcus read the message again.

He couldn’t move.

He couldn’t understand it.

What did Vanessa mean by “what she did before he married me”?

He looked at Caleb.

“Who is J?””

“I don’t know.””

“Did you see any other messages?””

Caleb nodded.

“Some were deleted.””

“Can you recover them?””

“I can try.””

Marcus looked toward the stairs.

Nia was still upstairs.

He lowered his voice.

“Whatever this is, we don’t let her find out until we know the truth.””

Caleb nodded.

But they both knew the truth was already affecting her.

Children always felt secrets.

Even when adults thought they were hiding them.

That afternoon, Marcus went through old memories.

Photos.

Emails.

Documents.

Everything from the years before Vanessa entered their lives.

He stopped when he found a photograph.

Nia was five years old.

She was sitting on his shoulders, laughing.

Her mother had taken the picture.

Before everything changed.

Before illness took her.

Before Marcus became both a father and a single parent overnight.

After his wife died, Vanessa had entered his life slowly.

She was kind.

Patient.

She told him she admired how devoted he was to Nia.

She told him she wanted to help.

Marcus remembered believing he had finally found someone who understood.

Now every memory felt different.

A knock came at the door.

Marcus stood.

When he opened it, he saw his sister Claire.

She looked exhausted.

“Marcus.””

He stepped aside.

“Come in.””

Claire entered and immediately looked toward the stairs.

“Is Nia okay?””

“She’s upstairs.””

Claire’s face tightened.

“I should have told you.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Told me what?””

Claire sat down.

“Vanessa called me three months ago.””

His expression changed.

“What?””

“She asked if Nia could stay with me.””

Marcus felt anger rise.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because she said you knew.””

Claire looked ashamed.

“She said you were overwhelmed and wanted a break.””

Marcus stared.

“I never said that.””

“I know that now.””

“What else did she say?””

Claire hesitated.

“She said Nia was becoming dangerous.””

Marcus almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was impossible.

“My daughter?””

“She said Nia was hurting herself to get attention.””

Marcus went silent.

Claire continued.

“I didn’t believe her completely.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Vanessa sounded convincing.””

Marcus looked away.

That was the frightening part.

Vanessa hadn’t just hurt Nia.

She had built a story.

A story designed to make people doubt the child.

Then Nia appeared at the top of the stairs.

Everyone turned.

She looked nervous.

“Am I in trouble?””

Marcus immediately stood.

“No.””

She slowly walked down.

“Are you talking about me?””

Nobody answered.

That answer was enough.

Nia stopped.

“I knew it.””

Marcus frowned.

“Knew what?””

“That everyone was trying to figure out what to do with me.””

His heart broke.

“Nia—”

“She told me this would happen.””

“Who?””

“Vanessa.””

The room became quiet.

Nia hugged herself.

“She said when you found out the truth, you’d send me away.””

Marcus walked toward her.

“What truth?””

Nia looked terrified.

Then she whispered:

“She said you would hate me if you knew.””

Marcus froze.

“What did she say you did?””

Nia looked down.

“I don’t know if I’m allowed to tell.””

Marcus knelt.

“You are always allowed to tell me the truth.””

She hesitated.

Then the words came out.

“Before Mom died… Vanessa said she knew things about my family.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“What things?””

“She said my mom didn’t want me.””

The room went silent.

Claire gasped.

“That’s not true.””

Nia’s eyes filled with tears.

“She said my mom was going to leave me anyway.””

Marcus felt something inside him break.

Because Vanessa had attacked the one wound Nia could never defend.

The loss of her mother.

Marcus held her.

“Your mother loved you.””

“But how do you know?””

“Because I saw it every day.””

Nia cried against him.

“She said you would choose a new family someday.””

Marcus looked toward the stairs.

Toward the empty space where Vanessa had stood.

And he finally understood.

Vanessa hadn’t just tried to remove Nia.

She had spent years making Nia believe she deserved to be removed.

That night, Caleb managed to recover part of the deleted messages.

Marcus sat beside him at the computer.

The screen loaded.

One message appeared.

From Vanessa.

I need this finished before Marcus discovers the truth.

Another appeared.

He can never know what happened with Nia’s mother.

Marcus stared.

Then another message appeared.

From J.

Are you sure you want to risk him finding out?

Marcus leaned closer.

The reply came moments later.

I have no choice. If he knows what I did, he’ll leave me.

Marcus felt cold.

“What did she do?””

Caleb shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

Then another recovered message appeared.

One sentence.

One sentence that changed everything.

Marcus read it twice.

Then a third time.

Because it was impossible.

Because it meant Vanessa’s betrayal had started before she ever entered his house.

The message said:

The accident wasn’t supposed to happen.

Marcus stood so quickly the chair fell backward.

“What accident?””

Caleb looked at him.

“Dad…”

Marcus stared at the screen.

May you like

Because there was only one accident Vanessa could be talking about.

The accident that took Nia’s mother.
