Chapter 6: The Truth Buried Before the Wedding
Marcus didn’t remember leaving the room.
One second he was staring at the message.
The next, he was standing outside on the back porch.
The rain had stopped.
But everything still felt cold.
The accident wasn’t supposed to happen.
Those words repeated in his mind.
Over and over.
He thought about the day his wife died.
The phone call.
The hospital.
The doctor’s expression.
The moment someone told him he was now raising Nia alone.
For years, he had accepted it as a tragedy.
A terrible accident.
But now there was a possibility he had never considered.
Someone knew more.
Someone had been hiding it.
Behind him, the door opened.
Claire stepped outside.
“You saw the messages.””
Marcus nodded.
“Do you know something?””
Claire was silent.
That silence answered before words did.
Marcus turned.
“Claire.””
She looked away.
“I didn’t know everything.””
“What did you know?””
Claire took a breath.
“Your wife was supposed to meet Vanessa the day before the accident.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
“They had an argument.””
“About what?””
Claire looked at him.
“Nia.””
Marcus felt his chest tighten.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Vanessa told me not to interfere.””
Marcus stared.
“You listened to her?””
“I thought it was a personal argument.””
Claire’s voice broke.
“I had no idea your wife would die the next day.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“How did Vanessa know my wife?””
Claire hesitated.
“I thought you knew.””
“Knew what?””
Claire whispered:
“They worked together.””
The world seemed to shift.
Marcus stared.
“Vanessa knew my wife before she met me?””
“Yes.””
He stepped back.
“No.””
Claire nodded sadly.
“I’m sorry.””
The next morning, Marcus found the old files.
The ones he had never opened after his wife’s death.
He had kept everything.
Insurance documents.
Police reports.
Medical records.
He spread them across the dining table.
Caleb sat beside him.
Nia watched from the doorway.
She looked uncertain.
Marcus immediately noticed.
“Come here.””
She walked over.
“You don’t have to hide anymore.””
She sat beside him.
For the first time, she was included in the truth instead of protected from it.
Marcus opened the police report.
The accident happened on a highway outside the city.
His wife’s car had lost control.
The official conclusion:
Driver error.
But one detail caught his attention.
A witness statement.
A witness who had never contacted him.
Marcus read the name.
Patricia Reynolds.
The same attorney.
His face went pale.
“Dad?””
Marcus looked up.
“Patricia was there.””
Caleb frowned.
“The lawyer?””
Marcus nodded.
“And she never told me.””
He immediately called her.
She answered after three rings.
“Mr. Hale.””
“Why didn’t you tell me you witnessed my wife’s accident?””
Silence.
Long silence.
Then Patricia whispered:
“Who told you?””
Marcus felt anger rise.
“Answer me.””
“I didn’t know if it was my place.””
“You saw what happened.””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
Another silence.
Then:
“Your wife’s car was forced off the road.””
Marcus stood.
“What?””
“I saw another vehicle.””
“Did you report it?””
“I tried.””
“What do you mean, you tried?””
Patricia’s voice became quieter.
“Vanessa convinced me not to.””
Marcus felt sick.
“Why?””
“She said your wife was unstable.””
The room went silent.
“She said the accident was probably your wife’s fault.””
Marcus gripped the phone.
“My wife was murdered?””
“I don’t know.””
“But you know Vanessa was involved.””
“I know she knew something.””
Marcus looked at Nia.
Then at Caleb.
Then at the files.
Everything connected.
The suitcase.
The lies.
The custody papers.
The messages.
Vanessa had been trying to erase Nia’s place in the family.
But why?
What did Nia know?
What did Vanessa fear?
Marcus ended the call.
Then his phone rang again.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A man’s voice spoke.
“Mr. Hale?””
“Yes?””
“You don’t know me.””
“Who are you?””
“My name is Daniel Brooks.””
Marcus frowned.
“Why are you calling?””
The man paused.
“Because I was the driver of the car that day.””
Marcus stood frozen.
“You’re lying.””
“I wish I was.””
“Where are you?””
“I need to meet you.””
“Why?””
The man’s voice dropped.
“Because Vanessa didn’t just know about the accident.””
A pause.
“She caused it.””
Marcus felt his blood run cold.

Then the man said the words that changed everything.
“And your daughter was never supposed to survive.””
