Chapter 8: The Enemy Inside the Family
Marcus called the police.
Not because he expected them to solve everything immediately.
Because he needed a record.
A timeline.
Evidence.
For years, Vanessa had controlled the story.
Now Marcus was building his own.
Officer Ramirez arrived that evening.
She examined the message carefully.
“This was sent from a blocked number.””
“Can you trace it?””
“We’ll try.””
She looked at the photograph.
“Do you recognize where this was taken?””
Marcus nodded.
“Nia’s school.””
Ramirez looked at him.
“Does anyone know what’s happening?””
Marcus hesitated.
Then answered honestly.
“My wife.””
The officer raised an eyebrow.
“Your wife?””
“She’s my ex-wife now.””
He explained everything.
The rain.
The photographs.
The custody documents.
The accident.
The messages.
Ramirez listened without interrupting.
When he finished, she looked at the files.
“This is more than a family disagreement.””
Marcus nodded.
“I know.””
“This looks planned.””
Those words confirmed what he already felt.
This wasn’t anger.
This wasn’t jealousy.
This was a strategy.
Someone had spent years preparing.
The next morning, Marcus received a call from his attorney.
“Marcus, we have a problem.””
“What happened?””
“Vanessa filed an emergency motion.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
“She’s claiming you removed Nia from a stable home environment.””
Marcus almost couldn’t believe it.
“She locked my daughter outside in the rain.””
“I know.””
“Then how is she doing this?””
“Because she filed before you discovered everything.””
Marcus looked at the paperwork.
A legal battle.
Exactly what Vanessa wanted.
“She’s trying to make me look unstable.””
“Yes.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“She planned this.””
At school, Nia tried to act normal.
But normal was impossible now.
Everyone around her looked different.
Teachers.
Parents.
Neighbors.
Because secrets changed how people looked at each other.
During lunch, a girl from her class approached.
“Nia?””
She looked up.
“Yeah?””
The girl hesitated.
“My mom said your family is having problems.””
Nia looked down.
“Oh.””
“She said your stepmom told people you were difficult.””
Nia froze.
The rumor had already spread.
Marcus was right.
Vanessa had prepared everything.
Not just legally.
Socially.
Emotionally.
She had created a version of Nia before anyone heard Nia’s side.
That afternoon, Marcus picked her up.
She got into the car quietly.
He noticed.
“What happened?””
“Nothing.””
“Nia.””
She looked out the window.
“Everyone thinks I’m bad.””
Marcus pulled over.
“Nia.””
She looked at him.
“People believed her because she told the story first.””
A tear fell.
“So they’ll always believe her.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
He reached into the back seat.
He pulled out a folder.
“What’s that?””
“The truth.””
He opened it.
Photos.
Messages.
Documents.
Everything.
“I spent years thinking protecting you meant keeping bad things away from you.””
Nia looked at him.
“But?””
“But sometimes protecting someone means standing beside them while they fight.””
She looked at the folder.
“Are we fighting?””
Marcus smiled sadly.
“We’re fighting for the truth.””
That night, Caleb discovered something.
He rushed downstairs.
“Dad.””
Marcus immediately stood.
“What happened?””
“I found Jonathan Vale.””
Marcus looked at the screen.
“What about him?””
“He’s not just Vanessa’s friend.””
A document appeared.
Jonathan had been involved in a company investigation years earlier.
The same year as the accident.
“What investigation?””
Caleb clicked.
Marcus read.
Fraud.
Insurance manipulation.
Financial crimes.
Then he saw a name.
Vanessa’s.
His hands went cold.
“She was involved.””
Caleb nodded.
“But there’s more.””
Another document appeared.
A private email.
Between Jonathan and Vanessa.
Marcus read the first line.
We need to make sure Marcus never finds out about the insurance money.
He stopped.
“Insurance money?””
Caleb scrolled.
The message continued.
Once Nia is removed, everything becomes easier.
Marcus stared.
The plan was bigger.
Much bigger.
They hadn’t just wanted Nia gone.
They wanted access.
To everything.
His home.
His money.
His family.
Then another email appeared.
A newer one.
From Vanessa.
Marcus read it.
And his face changed.
Because the message was sent after he threw her out.
She wasn’t running away.
She was preparing to come back.
The message said:
Phase two begins tomorrow.
May you like
And beneath it was one final sentence.
This time, Marcus loses everything.
