Chapter 10: The Video That Changed Everything
Marcus stood completely still.
For a moment, he forgot how to breathe.
The restaurant around him continued moving.
People laughed.
Silverware clinked against plates.
A server carried coffee to another table.
But Marcus heard nothing except Caleb’s voice.
Mom knew Vanessa was dangerous.
“Play it again,” Marcus said.
His voice sounded distant.
“Dad…”
“Play it again.””
A few seconds passed.
Then Caleb spoke through the phone.
“I’m sending it to you.””
Marcus ended the call and waited.
The video appeared moments later.
His hands shook slightly as he opened it.
The screen showed a dimly lit parking lot.
The timestamp was eight years earlier.
The night before the accident.
Marcus recognized the location immediately.
A restaurant where he and his wife had celebrated their anniversary the year before.
Then Vanessa appeared.
Younger.
Smiling.
Confident.
A few seconds later, Marcus’s wife walked into the frame.
His heart stopped.
Seeing her again felt impossible.
She looked exactly as he remembered.
The same smile.
The same way she tucked her hair behind her ear.
The same person he thought he had lost forever.
The two women stood facing each other.
At first, Marcus couldn’t hear anything.
Then Caleb adjusted the audio.
And Vanessa’s voice came through.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””
Marcus froze.
His wife crossed her arms.
“No, Vanessa. I understand exactly what you’re doing.””
Vanessa looked around nervously.
“You’re making this bigger than it is.””
“You tried to access my account.””
“I was helping you.””
“You were trying to steal from me.””
Marcus felt his chest tighten.
The conversation continued.
Vanessa’s expression changed.
The friendly mask disappeared.
“I gave you a chance.””
His wife stared at her.
“A chance to do what? Let you control my money?””
“To make things easier.””
“For who?””
A pause.
Then Vanessa said something that made Marcus’s blood run cold.
“For Marcus.””
His wife shook her head.
“You don’t love him.””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“You don’t know anything about me.””
“I know you watched him because you knew what he had.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
Because suddenly every memory changed.
Vanessa’s kindness.
Her patience.
Her interest in Nia.
Everything.
His wife continued.
“You came into our lives because you knew about the insurance policy.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You should be careful.””
“Is that a threat?””
The video shook slightly.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“Sometimes accidents happen.””
The screen went black.
Marcus stared at the phone.
He watched it again.
And again.
Each time, the same sentence hit harder.
Sometimes accidents happen.
That evening, Marcus returned home quietly.
Nia was sitting on the couch with a book.
She looked up immediately.
“You look sad.””
Marcus forced a smile.
“I’m okay.””
She studied him.
“You always say that when you’re not.””
For a moment, he saw something that broke his heart.
His daughter had spent years reading people’s emotions because she needed to survive.
Marcus sat beside her.
“Your mom loved you.””
Nia looked confused.
“Why are you saying that?””
“Because I want you to remember.””
Her eyes softened.
“She did?””
“More than anything.””
Nia looked down.
“Vanessa said…”
“I know what Vanessa said.””
Marcus took her hand.
“And she was wrong.””
Nia nodded slowly.
Then she asked:
“Did Vanessa hurt Mom?””
Marcus looked at her.
He wanted to protect her.
He wanted to say no.
But he had spent too long protecting people from the truth.
And the truth had hurt Nia more.
“I don’t know everything yet.””
“But?””
“But I think Vanessa has been lying for a very long time.””
Nia was quiet.
Then she whispered:
“I knew.””
Marcus looked at her.
“What?””
“I knew she didn’t like me.””
“How?””
“She looked at me like I reminded her of something.””
Marcus felt a chill.
“What do you mean?””
Nia hugged her knees.
“Sometimes she would stare at my mom’s picture.””
“And?””
“She would say, ‘You should have stayed gone.’”
Marcus felt anger explode inside him.
But he kept his voice calm.
“Did she say that to you?””
Nia nodded.
“Once.””
“When?””
“A few months after you married her.””
Marcus went silent.
Years.
Vanessa had been doing this for years.
The next morning, Marcus met with investigators.
The video changed everything.
The old accident report was reopened.
The financial records were examined.
The insurance documents were reviewed.
But one thing bothered Marcus.
Vanessa had disappeared.
Her phone was turned off.
Her apartment was empty.
She had planned an escape.
That afternoon, Marcus received an email.
No subject.
No sender.
Only an attachment.
A photograph.
It showed Vanessa sitting in a car.
With Jonathan.
The date was yesterday.
Beneath the image was one sentence.
You’re looking in the wrong direction.
Marcus stared.
Then another line appeared.
The person who betrayed your wife is closer than you think.
His phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Marcus.””
He recognized it instantly.
Vanessa.
“What do you want?””
“I want you to stop.””
“You tried to destroy my daughter.””
“I tried to protect myself.””
“You tried to erase Nia.””
A pause.
Then Vanessa said quietly:
“You still don’t understand.””
“Understand what?””
“That Nia is the reason everything went wrong.””
Marcus felt frozen.
“What did you say?””
Vanessa’s voice became colder.
“Ask your daughter what happened the night your wife died.””
The call ended.
Marcus immediately looked toward the stairs.
Nia was standing there.
She had heard enough.
May you like
And her face told him something terrifying.
She knew more than she had ever said.
