Chapter 9: The Choice She Made

Nia stared at the message on her phone.

The screen was bright against the darkness of the backyard.

Ask Danielle why she really chose you.

Her fingers tightened around the device.

She read it again.

And again.

The words didn’t change.

For the first time that night, she wasn’t just confused.

She was afraid.

Because the message wasn’t asking who her father was.

It wasn’t asking about the adoption.

It was asking about her mother.

Why she chose you.

“Nia?””

Caleb’s voice pulled her back.

She quickly locked her phone.

“What?””

“You okay?””

She looked toward the house.

Through the glass doors, she could see everyone inside.

Marcus.

Danielle.

Eleanor.

Richard.

All the people who claimed to know the truth.

All the people who had hidden pieces of it.

“I don’t know.””

Caleb studied her face.

“Who texted you?””

“No one.””

He frowned.

“That didn’t look like no one.””

Nia looked down.

She didn’t want to involve him.

Not because she didn’t trust him.

Because she was tired of secrets.

But she also knew something.

Every time she ignored a question, someone else used the silence to control the story.

So she showed him.

Caleb read the message.

His expression changed.

“That’s messed up.””

“Who would send this?””

He looked toward the house.

“Someone who wants you to doubt your mom.””

Nia swallowed.

“That’s everyone’s favorite thing tonight.””

Caleb didn’t smile.

“I’m serious.””

She looked at him.

“Do you think she’s lying?””

Caleb took a long breath.

“I think everyone is lying about something.””

That answer hurt because it was true.

Nia walked back inside.

Everyone looked up.

Marcus immediately noticed her expression.

“What happened?””

“Nothing.””

He stood.

“Nia.””

She looked at him.

“I said nothing.””

But her voice broke.

Marcus knew.

Parents always knew when something was wrong.

Even when they were the reason.

Danielle stood.

“Sweetheart?””

Nia turned toward her.

“Why did you choose me?””

The question changed the room.

Danielle froze.

“What?””

Nia held up her phone.

Nobody could see the message, but everyone saw Danielle’s reaction.

And that was enough.

Marcus looked at her.

“Danielle?””

She looked terrified.

“Where did you get that?””

“Answer me.””

“Nia…”

“Why did you choose me?””

Danielle sat down slowly.

“I don’t understand.””

“Yes, you do.””

Nia’s voice shook.

“Everyone keeps saying they protected me. Everyone keeps saying they loved me. But nobody tells me the truth.””

Danielle wiped her eyes.

“I do love you.””

“Then tell me.””

The room became silent.

Richard watched carefully.

Eleanor looked uncomfortable.

Marcus stood between wanting to protect Nia and knowing she needed answers.

Danielle finally spoke.

“When you were born…”

She stopped.

Then started again.

“When you were born, there was another baby.””

Nia already knew that part.

“Keep going.””

Danielle nodded.

“The hospital made a mistake with the records. For several hours, nobody knew which information belonged to which child.””

Nia listened.

“And?””

“And during that time, someone tried to use the mistake.””

“Who?””

Danielle looked at Richard.

Everyone followed her eyes.

Richard’s face hardened.

“Don’t.””

Danielle ignored him.

“Richard wanted control over the situation.””

Richard shook his head.

“You’re rewriting history.””

“No.””

Her voice became stronger.

“I’m finally telling it.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Danielle, what happened?””

She looked at him.

“When the hospital mistake happened, Richard saw an opportunity.””

Nia frowned.

“What opportunity?””

“To question whether you were really my daughter.””

The words still hurt.

Even though she had heard versions of them.

Danielle continued.

“He convinced people that the records couldn’t be trusted.””

Richard interrupted.

“Because they couldn’t.””

Danielle looked at him.

“But I knew you were mine.””

“How?””

Danielle’s eyes filled.

“Because I held you.””

The room went quiet.

“I held you before anyone could take you away. I knew your face. Your cry. The way you grabbed my finger.””

She looked at Nia.

“No document could change that.””

Nia looked away.

“Then why didn’t you fight?””

Danielle closed her eyes.

“Because I was losing.””

That answer surprised her.

Danielle continued.

“Richard had money. Lawyers. Connections. I had nothing.””

Marcus lowered his head.

“I should have done more.””

Danielle looked at him.

“We both should have.””

Nia looked at Marcus.

“But you stayed.””

“Yes.””

“And she left.””

The words were quiet.

Danielle nodded.

“I did.””

“Why?””

Danielle’s eyes filled.

“Because I found out Richard planned to use the custody battle to destroy you.””

Nia frowned.

“How?””

“He was going to force a DNA test.””

“That doesn’t sound bad.””

“No.””

Danielle shook her head.

“The test wasn’t the problem.””

“Then what was?””

Danielle looked at Richard.

“He wanted the results before anyone else saw them.””

Richard’s expression changed.

“And you’re making that sound suspicious?””

“Because it was.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Why?””

Danielle answered.

“Because Richard didn’t care who Nia’s father was.””

Everyone looked at her.

“He cared about whether Nia had a legal claim to the family.””

Richard’s face became cold.

“That’s not true.””

Danielle continued.

“If Nia wasn’t legally connected to certain parts of the family, he could control everything.””

Nia looked at Eleanor.

“Is that why you helped with the adoption?””

Eleanor looked down.

“Yes.””

“To protect me?””

“Yes.””

“Or to protect the family?””

Eleanor didn’t answer.

That silence hurt.

Nia looked back at Danielle.

“So what does that have to do with choosing me?””

Danielle reached into her purse.

Everyone tensed.

But she only pulled out a small envelope.

The same kind.

Nia froze.

“I’ve carried this for twelve years.””

Marcus looked at it.

“What is that?””

Danielle opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A hospital photograph.

A newborn baby.

Nia stared.

“That’s me?””

Danielle nodded.

“Yes.””

She turned it over.

On the back was writing.

A nurse’s handwriting.

Nia read it.

“Baby girl. Birthmark on left shoulder.””

She looked up.

Danielle whispered:

“The other baby didn’t have that mark.””

The room went silent.

Nia touched her shoulder instinctively.

“So you knew.””

“Yes.””

“You always knew.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you let me believe I was adopted?””

Danielle cried.

“Because legally, I was your adoptive mother.””

Nia looked confused.

“But…”

Danielle continued.

“Your birth records were changed during the investigation.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“That’s why the adoption was necessary.””

“Yes.””

Nia looked at everyone.

“So I wasn’t adopted because you weren’t my mother.””

Danielle shook her head.

“No.””

She reached for Nia’s hand.

“You were adopted because someone tried to take you from me.””

For the first time all night, Nia didn’t pull away.

Not completely.

But she didn’t step back.

Then Richard spoke.

“There’s still something she hasn’t told you.””

Everyone looked at him.

Marcus’s face darkened.

“Richard.””

But he continued.

“She hasn’t told you why she really came back today.””

Nia looked at Danielle.

Danielle’s face changed.

“What?””

Richard smiled faintly.

“She didn’t return just to see you.””

Danielle shook her head.

“That’s not true.””

Richard looked at Marcus.

“She returned because she found out someone reopened the original case.””

Marcus froze.

“What case?””

“The adoption case.””

Nia felt cold.

“What does that mean?””

Richard looked at her.

“It means someone is trying to legally prove you were never Danielle’s daughter.””

Danielle stood.

“No.””

Marcus looked furious.

“Who reopened it?””

Nobody answered.

Then Richard reached into his coat and placed one final document on the table.

A court notice.

A name was written at the bottom.

The person who filed it.

Nia looked down.

And her heart dropped.

Because the signature belonged to someone sitting in that room.

May you like

Someone who had spent the entire night pretending to protect her.

*Vanessa.*
