Chapter 5: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Gone

Nobody breathed.

The voice outside the door was calm.

Too calm.

That was what frightened Nia the most.

People who were angry usually sounded angry.

People who were scared usually sounded scared.

But the man standing outside their home sounded like he already knew exactly what would happen next.

Like he had been waiting for this moment.

Marcus stood frozen near the entrance.

His hand was still inches away from the lock.

Danielle moved closer to him.

“Don’t open it.””

Marcus looked back.

“You heard him.””

“I know.””

“He knows about the receipt.””

Danielle’s face was pale.

“That doesn’t mean you let him inside.””

The knock came again.

Slow.

Patient.

“Marcus.””

The voice came through the door.

“You can keep pretending I’m a ghost, but eventually ghosts knock.””

Nia felt a chill run down her spine.

She looked at Caleb.

For once, her older brother looked just as confused as she felt.

Vanessa stepped backward.

“Who is this?””

Nobody answered.

She looked at Marcus.

“Who is outside my house?””

Marcus closed his eyes for a moment.

Then he finally said the name.

“Richard.””

Danielle’s face tightened.

Nia noticed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

Fear.

“Your grandfather?”” Nia whispered.

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

The name felt strange.

Almost unreal.

Her entire life, she had known one version of the story.

Her grandfather was gone.

Danielle disappeared.

Everything bad that happened was explained as something nobody wanted to discuss.

Now, in less than an hour, every explanation she had grown up with had fallen apart.

Marcus slowly unlocked the door.

Danielle grabbed his arm.

“Marcus.””

He looked at her.

“If he wanted to hurt us, he wouldn’t be standing outside asking to come in.””

“That’s exactly what he wants you to think.””

Marcus looked at her.

“I need answers.””

Then he opened the door.

The man standing outside looked nothing like the monster Nia had imagined.

That almost made it worse.

He wasn’t frightening.

He was polished.

A gray coat.

Perfectly combed hair.

A watch that probably cost more than most things in the house.

He looked like someone who belonged in a boardroom, not someone who had haunted a family for twelve years.

His eyes moved across the room.

They stopped on Danielle.

For a moment, something unreadable passed across his face.

Then his gaze moved to Nia.

And he smiled.

Not warmly.

Not cruelly.

Just confidently.

“Nia.””

Hearing him say her name made her uncomfortable.

She stepped closer to Marcus.

Richard noticed.

“I see you still protect her.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“You need to leave.””

Richard looked around the room.

“So this is what it became.””

“What?””

“A house full of secrets.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“You’re the reason my family is fighting?””

Richard looked at her.

“And you are?””

“Vanessa.””

Richard nodded.

“The new wife.””

The way he said it made Vanessa’s expression change.

Like he already knew everything about her.

Marcus noticed.

“How do you know her?””

Richard smiled slightly.

“I know many things.””

Danielle stepped forward.

“You don’t get to come here and act like you’re in control.””

Richard looked at her.

“You disappeared.””

“I protected my daughter.””

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“You ran.””

Nia watched her mother.

She had never seen Danielle look so vulnerable.

Marcus stepped between them.

“Enough.””

Richard looked at him.

“You always were emotional.””

“And you always were manipulative.””

A small smile appeared on Richard’s face.

“There he is.””

Marcus’s fists tightened.

“I don’t know what game you’re playing, but you’re done.””

Richard glanced toward the table.

At the document.

Then at the receipt beside it.

“I see you found everything.””

Nia’s stomach dropped.

Marcus noticed.

“How long have you known?””

Richard ignored the question.

“Did you enjoy your little investigation?””

“Answer me.””

Richard looked at him.

“Long enough.””

The room became silent.

Vanessa looked confused.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned.

“You knew?””

Richard looked at her.

“Knew what?””

“That the watch was bought.””

Richard smiled.

“Yes.””

Vanessa frowned.

“Then why let everyone think Nia stole the money?””

That question made the room still.

Even Marcus looked at Richard differently.

Richard didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at Nia.

“I didn’t make anyone believe anything.””

Nia stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

“It means people see what they want to see.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“That’s not an answer.””

For the first time, Richard looked surprised.

Not because she challenged him.

Because he didn’t expect her to.

“You’re more like your mother than I thought.””

Nia looked away.

“I’m not like anyone who lies.””

The words were sharper than she intended.

But they were true.

Richard studied her.

Then he turned back to Marcus.

“The receipt proves the watch wasn’t stolen.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

“But it doesn’t explain why Danielle brought it here.””

Danielle frowned.

“I brought my daughter a gift.””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

“You brought her a message.””

Danielle went completely still.

Nia looked at her.

“What message?””

Danielle didn’t answer.

Richard smiled.

“There it is.””

Marcus looked at Danielle.

“What is he talking about?””

Danielle’s eyes filled with panic.

“I didn’t know.””

Richard laughed quietly.

“You didn’t?””

“No.””

“You honestly think I wouldn’t notice?””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Notice what?””

Richard reached into his coat pocket.

Everyone tensed.

But instead of a weapon, he pulled out a small envelope.

He placed it on the table.

“Another receipt.””

Marcus looked confused.

“What is this?””

Richard opened it.

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Richard looked directly at Danielle.

“That the watch wasn’t the only thing she gave Nia today.””

Nia felt confused.

“I don’t have anything else.””

Richard looked at her.

“Check your backpack.””

Nia froze.

“My backpack?””

Marcus immediately looked at her.

“Nia?””

She slowly walked toward her school bag.

Her hands felt heavy.

She opened the zipper.

Inside were her notebooks.

Her pencil case.

Her homework.

And underneath everything…

A small white envelope.

Nia stared at it.

“I didn’t put this here.””

Nobody said anything.

She picked it up.

The room felt like it was holding its breath.

Marcus looked at Danielle.

“Did you put that there?””

Danielle shook her head.

“No.””

Nia looked at the envelope.

“What is it?””

Richard answered.

“The reason I came here.””

She opened it carefully.

Inside was a photograph.

An old one.

Her fingers trembled as she pulled it out.

It showed three people.

Marcus.

Danielle.

And a third person standing beside them.

A woman.

Nia looked closer.

She recognized her.

Not from memory.

From pictures.

Her grandmother.

But there was something written on the back.

A sentence.

A sentence that made Marcus suddenly sit down.

Nia turned the photograph over.

And read it aloud.

“Your granddaughter is not the child you think she is.””

Nobody moved.

Nia looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus looked at Richard.

His face was full of fear.

“Where did you get this?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at Nia.

“I came here because you deserve to know the truth.””

Danielle stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Richard looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because you’ve lied enough.””

The words shocked everyone.

Especially Nia.

Because they came from her mother.

Richard smiled.

“Finally.””

Marcus stood.

“What are you saying?””

Danielle looked at him.

Tears filled her eyes.

“I should have told you years ago.””

Nia’s voice shook.

“Told us what?””

Danielle looked at her daughter.

And for the first time that night, she looked truly afraid.

“The reason your grandmother wanted custody.””

Marcus stared.

“Danielle.””

She whispered:

“Because she knew the truth about Nia’s birth.””

The photograph slipped slightly in Nia’s hand.

“What truth?””

Nobody answered.

Then Richard said quietly:

“The truth that Marcus is not your biological father.””
