Chapter 4: The Receipt That Changed Everything
Vanessa’s words landed in the room like a glass breaking on the floor.
“For an Apple Watch.””
Nobody spoke.
Not even Vanessa.
For the first time since Nia walked through the door, she looked unsure.
Marcus stared at her phone.
“Show me.””
Vanessa didn’t move.
“Marcus…”
“Show me.””
The tone in his voice made her hand tighten around the device.
She slowly walked over and handed it to him.
Nia watched from across the room.
She couldn’t see the screen clearly, but she saw her father’s face change as he read.
His eyebrows pulled together.
Then his eyes lifted toward Vanessa.
“You bought an Apple Watch?””
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“No.””
Marcus looked back at the phone.
“Then explain this.””
“I don’t know.””
Nia felt a strange feeling.
Not relief.
Not yet.
Because even though the evidence was changing, the words Vanessa had said still hurt.
You stole from me.
Those words didn’t disappear just because a receipt appeared.
Marcus scrolled through the transaction.
“What time was this?””
Vanessa leaned closer.
“Ten thirty-two.””
Danielle quietly spoke.
“That’s when I bought Nia’s watch.””
Everyone looked at her.
Marcus turned.
“You bought it at ten thirty-two?””
Danielle nodded.
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“The electronics store downtown.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“The same one?””
Danielle looked at her.
“What?””
Vanessa pointed at the phone.
“The transaction says the purchase was made at the electronics store downtown.””
The room went silent again.
Nia looked confused.
“So…”
She looked around.
“So Mom bought the watch.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Then why did everyone think I stole money?””
Nobody answered immediately.
Because the answer was obvious.
But nobody wanted to say it.
Vanessa looked away.
Marcus stared at her.
“Nia was wearing something you thought was suspicious, and then you found money missing.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“I had every reason to ask questions.””
“You accused her.””
“I was scared.””
“You told her she stole.””
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“I said I thought she wasn’t telling the truth.””
Nia looked at her.
“That’s the same thing.””
Her voice was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
Vanessa looked surprised.
Maybe because Nia rarely spoke back.
Maybe because she didn’t expect a twelve-year-old to understand exactly what had happened.
Nia stepped forward.
“You didn’t ask me.””
Vanessa didn’t respond.
“You decided.””
The room became uncomfortable.
Marcus looked at Nia.
She looked smaller than usual.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like she had been carrying something heavy.
“I believe you,” Marcus said.
Nia looked at him.
The words helped.
But only a little.
Because belief after suspicion felt different.
It wasn’t the same as trust.
Danielle reached for Nia’s hand.
“I’m sorry.””
Nia looked at her.
“For what?””
“For putting you in this position.””
Nia shook her head.
“You didn’t make her think I stole.””
Danielle looked toward Vanessa.
Neither woman spoke.
Then Marcus’s phone rang.
Everyone turned.
The name on the screen made him freeze.
Nia noticed.
“Who is it?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
The phone continued ringing.
Finally, he picked it up.
“Hello?””
Nobody could hear the voice on the other end.
But Marcus’s expression changed.
His shoulders stiffened.
His face lost color.
“Where did you get this number?””
A pause.
Then:
“No.””
Another pause.
“I don’t want you contacting my family.””
Nia looked at Danielle.
Danielle looked frightened.
Marcus’s voice became colder.
“You don’t get to come back after twelve years and demand anything.””
A long silence followed.
Then Marcus whispered:
“You’re lying.””
The call ended.
Everyone stared.
“What happened?”” Danielle asked.
Marcus placed the phone on the table.
Nobody moved.
“Your father.””
Danielle’s face went pale.
“He called?””
Marcus nodded.
Nia felt a chill.
Her grandfather.
The man she had believed was dead her entire life.
“He’s alive?””
Marcus didn’t answer immediately.
“Yes.””
The single word changed everything.
Nia sat down slowly.
Her entire world felt like it had shifted.
A person she never knew existed was suddenly real.
A person who had apparently been hiding.
A person who had something to do with the secrets surrounding her birth.
“What did he want?””
Marcus looked toward the paper.
“He asked about the document.””
Danielle’s eyes widened.
“How would he know about that?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
But everyone knew what the answer meant.
Someone had told him.
Vanessa looked nervous.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned toward her.
“What?””
She pointed at the paper.
“The document was in my purse.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
“But I didn’t put it there.””
Danielle looked at her carefully.
“Then who did?””
The question hung in the room.
Marcus looked toward the front door.
Then toward the windows.
As if he expected someone to be watching.
Nia hugged her arms around herself.
“Dad?””
Marcus walked over and locked the door.
The small click echoed.
“Nobody leaves this house.””
Vanessa frowned.
“Marcus, you’re making this dramatic.””
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“I’m finally taking it seriously.””
That sentence silenced her.
Marcus returned to the table.
He picked up the paper.
“I need to tell you both something.””
He looked at Nia.
“And I need you to hear this carefully.””
Nia nodded.
“When you were born, your grandmother filed for emergency custody.””
“Why?””
Marcus looked at Danielle.
“Because she claimed Danielle was unstable.””
Danielle looked down.
“I wasn’t.””
“I know.””
Nia looked between them.
“But why would she say that?””
Marcus hesitated.
“Because she wanted control.””
“Over me?””
“Yes.””
Nia frowned.
“But why?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Danielle did.
“Because your grandmother believed our family name mattered more than anything.””
Nia didn’t understand.
“I’m just a person.””
Danielle smiled sadly.
“You are.””
She squeezed Nia’s hand.
“But to some people, children become pieces on a board.””
Marcus looked at the document.
“There was something else.””
“What?””
He unfolded the paper again.
“When the custody case started, there was evidence submitted against Danielle.””
Nia looked at her mother.
“What kind of evidence?””
Marcus’s face tightened.
“Medical records.””
Danielle immediately looked up.
“No.””
Marcus nodded.
“I know.””
“What medical records?””
Marcus looked at Nia.
“Records that claimed Danielle was not mentally capable of caring for you.””
Nia stared.
“That’s horrible.””
“Yes.””
“But they were fake?””
Danielle’s eyes filled with tears.
“We thought so.””
Marcus corrected her.
“We knew so.””
The room went quiet.
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
“Then why didn’t you prove it?””
Marcus looked at her.
“Because before we could, Danielle disappeared.””
Nia looked at her mother.
“You left because of this?””
Danielle nodded.
“I was scared.””
“Of who?””
Danielle looked at the paper.
“Your grandfather.””
A sudden sound interrupted them.
A knock.
Everyone froze.
One knock.
Then another.
Marcus raised a finger.
Nobody spoke.
The house became completely silent.
Nia’s heart pounded.
Another knock came.
This time louder.
Vanessa whispered:
“Who is that?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
He slowly walked toward the door.
His hand reached for the handle.
“Don’t,” Danielle said.
He stopped.
“Why?””
Her voice shook.
“Because if it’s who I think it is…”
The knocking came again.
Three slow knocks.
Marcus looked through the window beside the door.
Then stepped back.
Nia watched his face.
“What?””
Marcus turned around.
And the fear in his eyes told her everything.
“He’s here.””
Danielle stood immediately.
“No.””
Marcus looked at her.
“It’s him.””
A shadow moved behind the glass.
Then a man’s voice came from the other side of the door.
A voice Nia had never heard before.
But somehow, everyone else in the room recognized.
“Marcus.””
The voice paused.
Then continued.
“Open the door.””
Nia looked at her father.
At her mother.
At Vanessa.
Nobody moved.
Then the man outside said the words that made Marcus go completely still.
“I know you found the receipt.””
Nia’s breath caught.
The receipt.
The Apple Watch.
The missing money.
The secrets.
May you like
It was all connected.
And whoever was standing outside had been watching from the beginning.
